Surgical outcomes of left hemicolon sparing resection versus extensive resection in treating synchronous colorectal cancer involving the right-sided colon and sigmoid colon or rectum.

BACKGROUND: There are different surgical strategies that can treat synchronous colorectal cancer (SCRC) involving separate segments, namely extensive resection (EXT) and left hemicolon-sparing resection (LHS). We aim to comparatively analyze short-term surgical results, bowel function, and long-term oncological outcomes between SCRC patients treated with the two different surgical strategies. METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight patients with SCRC lesions located in the right hemicolon and rectum or sigmoid colon were collected at the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and the

Hyperprogression after Anti-Programmed Death-1 Therapy in a Case of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Lynch Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Lynch syndrome is a hereditary condition caused by germline defects in mismatch repair (MMR) genes, resulting in microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) tumors. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of MSI-H advanced cancers. However, hyperprogressive disease (HPD) following ICI therapy is a rare and paradoxical phenomenon. We report a case of advanced sigmoid colon cancer associated with Lynch syndrome that developed HPD after pembrolizumab treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman with advanced sigmoid colon cancer and a histor

Successful rapid desensitization with 5-fluorouracil in a patient with metastatic sigmoid colon cancer: A case report.

Introduction5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antimetabolite widely used in colorectal, gastric, breast, and other solid tumors. Hypersensitivity reactions are uncommon but may be severe.Case ReportWe report a 63-year-old woman with metastatic sigmoid colon cancer who developed an anaphylactic reaction during the second course of a 5-FU-containing regimen, specifically following the bolus infusion. Skin prick and intradermal tests performed four weeks later were negative.Management & OutcomeAs no equally efficacious alternative existed within the planned regimen, rapid intravenous desensitization wa

A Case of Synchronous Laparoscopic Surgery for Sigmoid Colon Cancer Inaccessible by Colonoscopy and Left Adrenal Pheochromocytoma.

We report the case of a 65-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer who presented with left lower abdominal pain. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) revealed a tumor in the left adrenal gland. As the patient had no clinical symptoms suggestive of catecholamine excess, the lesion was initially suspected to be a left adrenal metastasis; however, endocrinological evaluation was performed to establish the differential diagnosis. According to the Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidelines, the patient was diagnosed with a left adrenal pheochromocytoma. To reduce overall surgical invasiveness a

Identification of postoperative complications in sigmoid colon cancer and rectal cancer using the C-reactive protein level.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative 'surgery-associated' complications may require reoperation, so early detection and treatment are crucial. However, the decision to perform additional tests for a definitive diagnosis often relies on the surgeon's experience rather than objective criteria. The C-reactive protein (CRP) level is widely used as an indicator of acute-phase inflammation but also increases in response to surgical stress. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish complications based solely on the CRP level. In this study, we examined the ability of the CRP level to predict complications after

Robot-assisted mesh rectosacropexy and sigmoid colon resection for obstructive defecation syndrome: a two-stage surgical approach.

Obstructive Defecation Syndrome (ODS) significantly affects the quality of life and is often associated with rectocele, rectoanal intussusception, and dolichosigma. Robot-assisted rectosacropexy followed by sigmoid resection may offer an effective therapeutic approach. This study included 7 female patients (mean age 61.14 years, BMI 27.17) with confirmed ODS and no prior treatment for rectal prolapse or dolichosigma. Using standardized scores (Wexner, Altomare ODS), outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Robot-assisted rectosacropexy with mesh placemen

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Presenting as a Sigmoid Colon Mesenteric Mass in a Child: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Insight.

We present the case of a 1-year-old girl who had been experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms for 15 days. The clinical examination showed a 3 cm × 3 cm mass in the lower abdomen that was not tender and did not move. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging revealed a 4.7 cm × 5.5 cm soft tissue density lesion in the left half of the pelvis, which is likely to have originated from the ovary. The surgical exploration uncovered a 5 cm × 6 cm × 5 cm solid-cystic mass originating from the sigmoid colon mesentery. The histopathology report indicated a benign mesenchymal tumor, favoring infl

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the sigmoid colon: A case report and comparison with published cases.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas. Its occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the sigmoid colon, is exceptionally uncommon and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 46-year-old female who presented with a four-year history of intermittent rectal bleeding and lower abdominal pain. A diagnostic workup, including imaging and colonoscopy, revealed a large ulcerated polypoid mass at the rectosigmoid junction. The definitive diagnosis of MPNST w

[A Case of Laparoscopically Assisted Local Resection of Early-Stage Sigmoid Colon Cancer Arising within a Diverticulum].

The patient was a 79-year-old male in whom a neoplastic lesion was found in the sigmoid colon diverticulum during a follow-up colonoscopy for colorectal adenoma. Endoscopic treatment was difficult, and the patient was referred to our department for surgery. The patient had many underlying diseases, including angina pectoris, interstitial pneumonia, and diabetic nephropathy, and the decision was made to perform local resection as a minimally invasive treatment. The patient was treated with laparoscopic excision of the sigmoid colon, followed by a small laparotomy and intraoperative endoscopy to

Secondary Colo-Colic Intussusception Caused by Giant Polyp of Sigmoid Colon in a 5-Year-Old Girl.

Intussusception is common in infants and young children. The most common type is small intestinal intussusception or ileo-colic intussusception. Colonic intussusception is rare. Intestinal polyps, especially large polyps or multiple polyps, can cause intussusception. Here, we report a rare case of colo-colic intussusception caused by a giant juvenile polyp of sigmoid colon, and the patient achieved good clinical effect through polypectomy under colonoscopy. So, when children have colonic intussusception, the possibility of colonic polyps should be considered.

Closed-Loop Bowel Obstruction Induced by Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Catheter Coiling at the Sigmoid Colon: A Case Report.

Intestinal obstruction is a rarely encountered complication in patients with ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. The most common causes of bowel obstruction in this subset of patients include volvulus, formation of a spontaneous knot, and adhesions. Herein, we report a 21-year-old bedridden male with a history of congenital hydrocephalus on VP shunt, spina bifida, neurogenic bladder, and paraplegia who presented with a seven-day history of abdominal discomfort, distention, constipation, vomiting, and intolerance to oral intake. Abdominal x-ray showed dilated bowel loops. Computed tomography (CT)

Implantation of sigmoid colon cancer into the endoscopic resection site of intramucosal rectal cancer: A case report.

A 70-year-old woman was diagnosed with intramucosal rectal cancer and advanced sigmoid colon cancer at the same time. First, the intramucosal rectal cancer was curatively resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection, and surgery was subsequently performed for sigmoid colon cancer. After 20 months, a follow-up colonoscopy revealed a tumor growth at the ulcer scar of the endoscopic submucosal dissection. Histological findings and KRAS mutation analysis suggested implantation of sigmoid colon cancer to the post-endoscopic submucosal dissection site of intramucosal rectal cancer.

Sigmoid colon perforation in a SARS-CoV-2 positive neonate: a uniqueness report and a brief review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the relative prevalence of small bowel and proximal colon perforation in the neonatal period, recto-sigmoid perforation is extremely rare. Full-term neonates experience intestinal perforation less frequently than premature infants. Here we report a neonate with sigmoid perforation and simultaneous Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2550 g female neonate born at 38-weeks' gestation from a coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infected mother by cesarean section. Despite a good Apgar score in the first and fifth minutes
