Beliefs, sexual behaviours and preventive practices with respect to HIV/AIDS among commercial sex workers in Daulatdia, Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the rising prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) since 1994 in Bang … t, over-ridden by immediate economic and survival concerns. Although the majority of CSWs knew that condoms afforded protection against STDs/AIDS, only one-third of sex acts on the last day of work were protected through condom use. CSWs who were married, had been a CSW for less than 5 years, were with a new client, or had two or more clients in last work …

Behavioral Economic Assessment of Contraceptive Use and Abortion Access Among College Cis Women in the U.S.

College students are at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, complicated by changes in abortion access across the United States. The current study utilized a behavioral economic framework to examine how sex-related behavior, knowledge, and attitudes as well as access to abortion impacted valuation of condoms and an emergency contraceptive (i.e., morning after pill) among cis women college students (N = 109). Behavioral economic tasks included condom demand (ConPT) and condom delay discounting (ConDD) in the context of a one-night stand as well as a novel …

What messages can foster safer sex among young women? Experimental evidence concerning the role of emotions and moral norms.

Through a 2 × 2 × 2 quasi experimental design (N = 254), this research investigated if a social campaign eliciting positive emotions and activating moral norms might enhance condom negotiation skills, intended and estimated condom among young women with or without past sexual experience with casual partners. Emotions had a main effect on one of the six condom negotiation strategies we considered; for most of the other variables an interaction effect with moral norms and/or past behaviour emerged. Concerning estimated condom use, positive emotions worked better than negative ones when moral nor

Homonegative Attitudes and Risk Behaviors for HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Sexually Active Men in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We examined associations between homonegative attitudes and HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (HIV/STI) risk behaviors among sexually active US men. METHODS: We used the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth (n = 10 403) and multivariable logistic regression models to examine homonegative attitudes in relation to condom use, number of past-year sex partners, HIV/STI testing, and STI diagnoses. RESULTS: Among men who had sex with men, homonegative attitudes were associated with lower odds of condom use during anal sex with women (before the past year) and past-year

HIV risk and sexual health among female migrants in China.

Sexual behavior is the dominant mode of HIV transmission in China, and young female migrants are among the populations at highest risk. This article examines how HIV-related risk behaviors among female migrants might vary according to workplace settings. Participants were young female migrants recruited from three workplace settings-factories, restaurants and entertainment venues. In a cross-sectional survey, we assessed 457 participants' sociodemographic characteristics, HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, condom use knowledge, sexual behaviors, condom use behavior and reproductive health factors. Cluster-randomized controlled trial of an HIV/sexually transmitted infection risk-reduction intervention for South African men.

OBJECTIVES: We tested the efficacy of a sexual risk-reduction intervention for men in South Africa, where heterosexual exposure is the main mode of HIV transmission. METHODS: Matched-pairs of neighborhoods in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, were randomly selected and within pairs randomized to 1 of 2 interventions based on social cognitive theory and qualitative research: HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk-reduction, targeting condom use, or attention-matched control, targeting health issues unrelated to sexual risks. Sexually active men aged 18 to 45 years were eligible. The

Sexual abuse history, alcohol intoxication, and women's sexual risk behavior.

We examined potential differences in women's likelihood of sexual risk taking in a laboratory setting based on alcohol intoxication and sexual abuse history. Participants (n = 64) were classified as non-sexually abused (NSA) or as having experienced sexual abuse in childhood only (CSA) or adulthood only (ASA) and randomly assigned to consume alcoholic (.06, .08, or .10% target blood alcohol content) or non-alcoholic drinks, after which participants read and responded to a risky sex vignette. Dependent measures included vaginal pulse amplitude, self-reported sexual arousal, likelihood of engagi

Birth control method choice and use of barrier methods for sexually transmitted disease prevention among low-income African-American women.

In a prospective study of 1122 women attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic in Alabama, consistent use of the male condom and … ermicide use increased in all groups. Barrier method users were more likely than other women to use condoms and spermicides during the study. Women who used no birth control method at baseline experienced the largest increase in barrier use during follow up, although their barrier use rates were lower than in other groups. The synergism between the intent …

Contraceptive choice, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV infection, and future fecundity.

Because contraception affects not only the risk of unplanned pregnancy but also that of sexually transmitted infections, the choice of particular methods is important to future fertility. However, certain trade-offs are necessary. Contraceptives with the best record of preventing pregnancy provide little protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Conversely, those barrier methods with higher failure rates for pregnancy can reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting an STD. For example, condoms used correctly and consistently provide the best protection against infection. Althou…
