Genital warts are an epidermal manifestation attributed to the epidermotropic human papillomavirus (HPV). Over 100 types of double-stranded HPV have been isolated and completely sequenced thus far. HPV are grouped into low-risk (non-oncogenic) types such as type 6 and type 11, which cause benign anogenital warts (condyloma accuminata), and high-risk (oncogenic) types, such as types 16, 18, 31, and 45, which occasionally lead to cancer.

The purpose of this 20-month prospective study conducted in the dermatology department of Lomé Teaching Hospital was to determine the prevalence of sexual abuse in pre-adolescent children with anogenital warts. From May 1997 to December 1998, a total of 16 cases of anogenital warts were diagnosed in children under the age of 12 years. Sexual abuse was discovered in 8 cases. The Authors report the results of their research into the use of the alpha-interferon in the microcondylomatosis of the female genital apparatus. The therapy was successful in 18% of cases. Considering oncological risk connected with the permanency of the HPV in the uterine portio, the Authors consider they must continue the study on new diagnostic and therapeutic protocols.

The authors review the literature on the subject of the questions raised by the finding of condyloma acuminatum in children. These questions concern its epidemiology, the methods of transmission, the existence or otherwise of sexual abuse and predisposing conditions, its relationship with various viral serotypes and with the onset of neoplasia in adulthood. The most appropriate modes of behaviour in relation to individual cases are also discussed and the authors make a few comments regarding prevention.

The study included two different sized groups of patients suffering from various degrees of valvular microcondylomatosis. A group of 40 patients was treated using combined therapy while a second group of 20 patients received immunomodulating therapy alone with Sintomodulin. In particular, possible changes in the T-cell line of the immune system and correlations between the viral lesion and variations in serum levels of lymphocyte subpopulations were assessed. Results were analysed up to one year after the end of therapy.

We have been looking for urethral condylomatous lesions during a screening genital examination of 2,000 male patients who were the partners of women presenting with a condylomatous infection. An audit was undertaken of time lost from work and reasons given to employers for absence in a group of patients attending a city centre outpatients department. For the audit a Department of Genito-urinary Medicine was selected and 54 patients were interviewed. The time lost by attendance and the reasons given are discussed as are ways of improving medical care through new treatments and altered appointment times.
