SEM was used to visualize tear-film/hydrogel polymer surface interactions. Lenses were preserved by fixation including a quaternary ammonium complex to aid in mucin preservation. In less than 2 weeks of continuous wear the anterior surface was completely coated, yet the coating was absent from the posterior lens surface. In a retrospective analysis, we studied the association between ocular atopy and keratomycosis. Forty-one (26.3%) of 156 patients with fungal corneal ulcers were found to have preexisting allergic conjunctivitis. All patients had been using a combination of antibiotics and corticosteroids before developing the corneal ulcer. Fungus isolation on Sabouraud's agar medium was obtained in 74.8% (31/42) ulcers. From clinical-pharmacologic and clinical data involving over 2,800 patients, astemizole appears to be a very effective and well-tolerated antihistamine. It is superior to placebo and commonly used antihistamines for the relief of rhinitis, particularly rhinorrhea and sneezing. It has a pronounced effect on ocular itching and lacrimation in conjunctivitis and on pruritus and wheals in urticaria. This superiority is due to a very specific, almost complete and sustained histamine H1-blockade. The clinical data confirm the experimental data in relation to its lack of sedative effects.
