The authors report a case of aneurysmal bone cyst in a female, revealed by a pelvic mass. Ultrasonography visualised the pelvic mass, its fluid content, internal septations and fluid level and displacement of surrounding structures. Sacral plain radiographs and computed tomography images showed trabeculated osteolysis involving the sacrum, sacro-iliac joint and adjacent iliac wing. The endopelvic component had a liquid-density varying between 15 and 30 HU, with contrast enhancement of its wall and internal septations.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), often discovered in utero, cover a wide spectrum of outcomes ranging from normal postnatal kidney function to foetal death. The current ultrasound workup does not allow for an accurate assessment of the outcome. The present study aimed to significantly improve the ultrasound-based prediction of postnatal kidney survival in CAKUT.
METHODS: Histological analysis of kidneys of 15 CAKUT foetuses was performed to better standardize the ultrasound interpretation of dysplasia and cysts. Ultrasound images of 140 CAKUT foetuses

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a hereditary disorder characterized by the progressive enlargement of cysts derived from tubules. Tubule cell proliferation and chloride-dependent fluid accumulation, mechanisms underlying cyst expansion, are accelerated by adenosine 3':5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP). This study examined the extent to which caffeine may stimulate the production of cAMP by cyst epithelial cells, thereby adversely increasing proliferation and fluid secretion. Mural epithelial cells from ADPKD cysts and normal human kidney cortex cells (HKC) were cultured, a

Insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2 (IGF-1 and 2), oxytocin, progesterone, estradiol and ubiquitin were measured in bovine follicle-lutein-cysts and in follicular fluid after the classification of ovarian follicles by size (Class I = <4 mm; Class II = 5-8 mm; Class III = 9-12 mm; Class IV = preovulatory; Class V = cystic). It was found that IGF-1 concentrations increased during growth from 280 ng/ml in small follicles to 489 ng/ml in preovulatory follicles; IGF-2 appeared to remain constant in follicular fluid and in cysts (275 ng/ml). Oxytocin values were low in Class I, II and III follicles

Arachnoid cysts are abnormal intradural collections of cerebrospinal fluid. For posterior fossa arachnoid cysts (PFACs), symptoms vary greatly, often relating to cranial nerve impingement and/or hydrocephalus. Literature on long-term symptomatic and radiographic follow-up of PFACs is lacking. This case study describes a 32-year-old man who presented with headaches and left-sided hearing loss and was found to have a large left-sided cerebellopontine angle arachnoid cyst with syrinx and ventriculomegaly. After PFAC fenestration and excision, his headaches resolved and his hearing markedly improv

While dermoid cysts are fairly commonly seen in the surgical pathology practice, rarely is the malignant transformation of dermoid cysts seen. Even rarer still is the cytopathologic report of this manifestation. In both of these case reports, the diagnosis of the malignant transformation of a dermoid cyst was made only after the initial cytologic diagnosis of malignancy had been reported and further investigation identified the source of the malignant cells. Unfortunately in both of these cases, the disease was detected at an advanced stage. To my knowledge and with a thorough literature searc

We prospectively evaluated the percutaneous injection of autogenous bone marrow for the treatment of active simple bone cysts in ten consecutive children with cysts in the proximal humerus, proximal femur or tibia. The treatment included percutaneous biopsy, aspiration of fluid and the injection of autogenous bone marrow aspirated from the iliac crest. All the patients became painfree after a mean of two weeks and resumed full activities within six weeks. All ten cysts consolidated radiologically and showed remarkable remodelling within four months. Review at 12 to 48 months showed satisfactor

In this communication attention is called to some features of ovarian cyst formation in rats after exposure to 6 mg/100 gm body weight of dehydroepiandrosterone for 21 days. Cysts were identified by the transformation of mural granulosa cells into epithelial cells. The invaginations of the basal plasma membrane of the epithelial cells of the cyst are thought to be indications of the cells' involvement in active endocytosis. This endocytosis may be one strategy for moving fluid into the cyst. The filamentous actin of granulosa cells cultured in the presence of 10(-5) mol/L dehydroepiandrosteron

BACKGROUND: Obstructive hydrocephalus is a neurologic condition that has varied clinical and imaging presentations, as well as a multitude of congenital etiologies including aqueductal stenosis and less commonly arachnoid cysts. Aqueductal stenosis is a physical limitation to cerebrospinal fluid flow along the course of the aqueduct, which results in enlargement of the third and lateral ventricles. Arachnoid cysts are thin walled and fluid filled central nervous system lesions that can result in mass effect on adjacent structures. While arachnoid cysts are mostly asymptomatic, they may present

BACKGROUND: The ideal treatment method for cranial arachnoid cysts stills controversial, each of endoscopic and microscopic techniques has its pros and cons.
METHODS: We described cystocisternostomy technique for arachnoid cysts through fenestration medial to the edge of tentorium through lateral pontomesencephalic membrane and illustrated it's outcomes. We performed endoscopic lateral pontomesencephalic membranotomy in nine children with zero angled rigid endoscope (STORZ).The age ranged from eight months up to nine years. The cysts were Galassi type III in eight cases (five of them giant he

Nitric oxide (NO) influences tubular fluid and electrolyte transport, and hence possibly also fluid accumulation in renal cysts. The expression and activity of intrarenal constitutive NO synthase (cNOS) [neuronal NOS, nNOS and endothelial NOS, eNOS] and inducible NOS (iNOS) and plasma nitrite/nitrate (PNOx) concentration were assessed in homozygous Han:SPRD polycystic kidney disease (PKD) rats (cy/cy), heterozygous Han:SPRD PKD rats (cy/+), homozygous normal Han:SPRD littermates (+/+) and Sprague Dawley rats (sd). The results showed: 1) nNOS expression was decreased in proximal tubules and thi

An investigation was carried out to study the prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus hydatidosis in feral pigs (Sus domesticus) in the Charters Towers region of tropical North Queensland. Data were collected from a total of 238 carcasses, which were hunted and shot in the Burdekin River catchment area. Organs of the abdominal, thoracic, and pelvic cavities were examined for the presence of hydatid cysts. In the laboratory, cysts and hydatid cyst fluids were examined under a stereoscopic binocular microscope and a compound microscope. An overall prevalence of E. granulosus hydatid cysts in feral…

BACKGROUND: The preoperative classification of pancreatic cysts and detection of advanced neoplasia (high-grade dysplasia/pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma [PDAC]) represents a significant diagnostic challenge. A prospective, multi-institutional study found that DNA-based testing (PancreaSeq) of pancreatic cyst fluid (PCF) improved the assessment of pancreatic cysts. Notable imitations to PancreaSeq necessitated the development of a DNA/RNA-based panel called PancreaSeq Genomic Classifier (GC). We validated PancreaSeq GC on a prospective patient cohort.

Spinal schwannomas represent approximately 20%-30% of all spinal tumors and are the most common type of intradural extramedullary tumors. These benign tumors arise from Schwann cells, which myelinate peripheral nerve fibers. Although typically slow-growing and benign, schwannomas can cause significant neurological deficits depending on their location and size. The presence of a fluid-fluid level on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in spinal schwannomas is extremely rare, with most reported cases involving vestibular schwannomas of the central nervous system. In this report, we present a 50-yea

BACKGROUND: Clinical cases have been reported with women who got pregnant with confirmed low serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations, thus demonstrating that low serum AMH concentration cut-points could be fairly specific for poor ovarian response (POR) to gonadotrophin stimulation, but not for pregnancy. That observation prompted the question whether serum AMH concentration accurately corresponded to the whole amount of AMH secreted by granulosa cells.
OBJECTIVES: To measure AMH levels in peritoneal fluid and their correlations with serum AMH concentrations.

Arachnoid cysts, fluid-filled lesions within the central nervous system, pose diagnostic challenges. This study examines a unique case of a quadrigeminal arachnoid cyst in a 13-year-old girl, emphasizing accurate identification and treatment. The patient's symptoms of blurred vision and headaches led to the discovery of papilledema and imaging revealing a sizable cyst causing obstructive hydrocephalus. Urgent surgical intervention involved suboccipital craniectomy and infratentorial-supracerebellar cyst drainage, resulting in favorable postoperative outcomes. Further analysis of anatomical var

Intrameniscal cysts begin with the flow of synovial fluid from a meniscal tear in one direction, enlarging probably as a result of an on-and-off valve mechanism of the tear flap. The current available literature focuses primarily on the necessity for surgery, however a large meniscus resection to remove cysts may place an additional burden on menisci, leading ultimately to knee joint degenerative changes. In this article, we present a rare case of intrameniscal cysts with an isolated horizontal meniscal tear in an adolescent, and describe a new arthroscopic procedure for treating this type of

Tunnel cyst formation is a rare complication after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, usually occurring 1-5 years post-operatively, which may occasionally be symptomatic. There are multiple proposed theories regarding the etiology of tunnel cysts. Theories include necrosis, foreign-body reaction, lack of complete graft osteo-integration, and intravasation of articular fluid. It is important to know if the tunnel cysts are communicating or not communicating with the joint, as surgical management may be different. Imaging characteristics on magnetic resonance images (MRI) include tibial
