Impact of postnatal depression on infants' growth in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of maternal postnatal depression to infant growth and under-nutrition in Africa has not been well studied. This study aims to examine the impact of postnatal depression (PND) on infants' physical growth in the first 9 months of life in Nigeria. METHODS: A longitudinal case controlled study in which 242 women (consisting of 120 depressed and 122 matched non-depressed postpartum women) had their infants' weight and length measured at the 6th week, 3rd month, 6th month and 9th month after delivery. Discontinuation with breastfeeding and illnesses like diarrhoea, pers

Differential Eating Disorder Symptom Trajectories Across the Perinatal Period and Associated Psychosocial Factors.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is a critical risk period for changes in eating disorder (ED) symptoms. However, extant research is mixed regarding the direction of these changes, with some studies identifying relief from ED symptoms and others finding evidence of worsening symptoms during this time. To account for heterogeneity in ED symptom change among pregnant and postpartum individuals, the current study aimed to explore ED symptom trajectories and their psychosocial correlates during pregnancy and the first postpartum year using person-centered statistical approaches. METHOD: A communi

Beyond Trauma Exposure and Symptoms: Preconception Transdiagnostic Vulnerability and Postpartum Outcomes in Healthy Women.

Background: Preconception screening traditionally focuses on physical health indicators and diagnosed psychopathology, potentially overlooking subclinical psychological vulnerabilities that could predict perinatal mental health outcomes. This study examined whether transdiagnostic psychological assessment before pregnancy provides information beyond childhood adversity and current symptom severity. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 170 healthy nulliparous women attempting natural conception underwent preconception assessment and were followed through postpartum. Preconception measures

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) 4-6 weeks and 6 months after birth: A longitudinal population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors that precipitate and maintain post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) after birth is important to inform clinical and research practice; yet, prospective longitudinal studies on the predictors of PTSS are limited. This study aimed to determine the pregnancy and postpartum factors associated with PTSS at 4-6 weeks and 6-months postpartum. METHOD: A systematic sample of 950 pregnant women were recruited from three maternity hospitals in Turkey. Participants completed assessments of depression, anxiety, PTSS and social support in pregnancy, 4-6 weeks and 6-months po

Evaluating and Managing Postpartum Thyroid Dysfunction.

Postpartum thyroid dysfunction (PTD) occurs in approximately 5% to 10% of all women within 1 year following delivery and is usually due to intrinsic thyroid disease rather than hypothalamic or pituitary lesions. The most common etiology of PTD, which may resemble postpartum depression, is autoimmune thyroid disease (chronic or Hashimoto's thyroiditis). Women with Graves' disease who experience symptom exacerbation in the postpartum period account for a small percentage of cases. Clues to PTD include nonspecific symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, depression, palpitations, and irritability. On

Early prediction of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Medically complicated childbirth is associated with increased risk of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet mechanisms linking complications to persistent PTSD symptoms remain poorly understood. METHODS: A total of 667 women were followed from pregnancy through 6 months postpartum in a prospective longitudinal study. Acute childbirth-related distress was assessed during the immediate postpartum hospitalization using the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory. Childbirth-related PTSD symptoms were assessed at approximately 10 days, 2 months, and 6 months postpartum

Concurrent Prescription Fills of Opioids and Benzodiazepines Among Postpartum Women During COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Concurrent prescribing of opioids and benzodiazepines is associated with increased risk of emergency department visits and overdose. Postpartum women commonly receive opioids for pain after delivery and are at risk for postpartum depression/anxiety. Although prior research finds increases in opioid prescribing and symptoms of depression/anxiety during COVID-19, concurrent prescribing among postpartum women has not been examined in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: Using data from a large sample of privately insured postpartum women (N=514,120), the authors compared concurrent pr

Two babies, two bonds: Frequency and correlates of differential maternal-infant bonding in mothers of twins.

We assessed prevalence and correlates of differential maternal-infant bonding (i.e., experiencing a stronger bond with one baby vs. the other) in mothers of twins, focusing on aspects of maternal mental health, well-being, and pregnancy/birth that have been previously linked with maternal-infant bonding. Participants (N = 108 American women, 88.89% White, 82.41% non-Hispanic, aged 18-45, who gave birth to twins in the past 6-24 weeks) were recruited from postpartum support websites. Participants completed a Qualtrics survey assessing pregnancy/birth history, symptoms of depression and anxiety,

Factors Affecting Follow-up for Specialty Postpartum Care after Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury at a Single U.S. Institution.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Early postpartum specialist care may improve outcomes for birthing people who sustain obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS). This study was aimed at describing follow-up rates in a postpartum recovery clinic (PPRC) for patients who sustained OASIS at delivery, and at identifying factors associated with failure to follow up. We hypothesized that providing care in PPRC would result in high rates of access to specialized care for OASIS. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with OASIS at a single institution from January 2018 to December 2023

Perceived control and support during childbirth and their association with postpartum mental health outcomes: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is a highly vulnerable stage for maternal mental health, during which anxiety, postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide risk may arise. Perceived maternal control and support during childbirth are important dimensions of the childbirth experience and may be associated with postpartum mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between perceived control and support during childbirth and the suicide risk, PPD, anxiety, and PTSD in Spanish women in the postpartum period. METHOD: A cross-sectional

Late Pregnancy and Postpartum Emergencies.

The period just after delivery is a high-risk period for women with associated morbidity and even mortality. There are large variations in complication rates across various groups in the United States. This article covers complications commonly encountered in the emergency department in late pregnancy and the early postpartum period. It specifically addresses postpartum depression, peripartum cardiomyopathy, and the late pregnant or postpartum patient presenting with headache or neurologic complaints. Emergency physicians should be well versed in common and life-threatening postpartum patholog

Perinatal depression and DNA methylation of oxytocin-related genes: a study of mothers and their children.

The present study investigated the association of perinatal depression (PD) with differential methylation of 3 genomic regions among mother and child dyads: exon 3 within the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene and 2 intergenic regions (IGR) between the oxytocin (OXT) and vasopressin (AVP) genes. Maternal PD was assessed at 5 time-points during pregnancy and postpartum. Four groups were established based on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) cut-off scores: no PD, prenatal or postpartum depressive symptoms only and persistent PD (depressive symptoms both prenatally and postpartum). Salivary

Association between maternal pregnancy complications and long-term depressive and anxiety disorders: evidence from the UK millennium cohort study.

PURPOSE: Limited evidence exists on the association between maternal pregnancy complications and depressive and/or anxiety disorders in the longer term. We examined the association between pregnancy complications and later depressive and anxiety disorders. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of mothers who participated in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Pregnancy complications were self-reported at 9 months postpartum and categorised into 0, 1, 2, and 3 + complications. Follow-up surveys, including questions about clinically diagnosed depressive, and anxiety disorders were carried out at 3, 5

Psychosocial Risk Factors for Perinatal Depression among Female Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Perinatal depression is a health concern among pregnant and postpartum adolescents as it may negatively impact fetal development and result in complications such as preterm delivery, low infant birth weight, and poor maternal-infant attachment. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine psychosocial risk factors for depression among adolescents during pregnancy and postpartum. A literature search was conducted from five databases from 1995 to 2016. A total of 17 studies matched the inclusion criteria. Lack of social support, perceived stress, prior history of depression, and a history
