Clinical features and antifungal treatment of invasive Scedosporium boydii infection: report of a case and literature overview.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present a case of persistent mycetoma caused by Scedosporium boydii and undertake a systematic literature over … ing relevant clinical data. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that post-transplantation, trauma, near drowning, corticosteroid administration, and prior surgical history were the main risk factors for Scedosporium boydii infection. Prevalent infection sites included skin/bone tissues, the central nervous system, and ocular regions. Among the 49 patients iden …

Pathologic findings and causes of death in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus stranded along the Georgia coast, USA (2007-2013).

Between 2007 and 2013, before the 2013 cetacean morbillivirus outbreak, 26 fresh bottlenose dolphin carcasses were necropsied on the coast of Georgia, USA. Here, we present the pathological and microbiological findings associated with their most likely causes of death. The primary cause of death was determined in 25 individuals and included systemic bacterial infection (n = 7), verminous and bacterial bronchopneumonia (n = 5), drowning/entanglement (n = 5), disseminated histoplasmosis (n = 1), intestinal intussusception (n = 1), vegetative endocarditis (n = 1), meningitis (n = 1), necrotizing …

Brain Death in Children: Incidence, Donation Rates, and the Occurrence of Central Diabetes Insipidus.

INTRODUCTION: Brain death is currently defined as the loss of full brain function including the brainstem. The diagnosis and its subsequent … t causing brain death was post-cardiorespiratory arrest in 8 (21.6%), head trauma in 8 (21.6%), and drowning in 4 (18.9%). In all patients, transcranial Doppler ultrasound was utilised as an ancillary test and test was repeated until it was consistent with brain death. RESULTS: In 33 (89%) patients, central diabetes insipidus was determined at or near the …

Therapeutic Hypothermia in Children and Adults with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Great expectations have been raised about neuroprotection of therapeutic hypothermia in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) by analogy with its effects after heart arrest, neonatal asphyxia, and drowning in cold water. The aim of this study is to review our present knowledge of the effect of therapeutic hypothermia on outcome in children and adults with severe TBI. A literature search for relevant articles in English published from year 2000 up to December 2013 found 19 studies. No signs of improvement in outcome from hypothermia were seen in the five pediatric studies. Varied results w…

The great East Japan earthquake of March 11, 2011, from the vantage point of blood banking and transfusion medicine.

BACKGROUND: The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, and subsequent tsunami took nearly 20 000 lives in Tohoku, the northeastern part of Japan's main island. Most victims were either carried away by the tsunami or drowned. The ability to collect blood was disrupted on the Pacific coast of Tohoku. Inland areas were less affected, but allogeneic blood collected in Tohoku is tested at the Miyagi Red Cross Blood Center (Miyagi Center) in the coastal city of Sendai. Miyagi Center was damaged and could not test for 2 months. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study are as follows: (1) to assess

Effects of perimortem physical factors associated with death on exogenous ethanol concentrations in cardiac blood.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether perimortem physical factors associated with death affect exogenous ethanol concentrations in cardiac blood. Forty-one autopsies of alcohol-intoxicated decedents with no or little putrefaction were involved. Postmortem intervals ranged from 6 to 96 h at the time of autopsy. Our 41 cases consisted of 17 fire victims, 8 drowned persons, 3 blood-loss patients who underwent unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 30-50 min, 3 blood-loss persons without CPR, three non-blood-loss patients who underwent unsuccessful CPR for 5-60 min, and

The congenital long QT syndromes in childhood.

Twenty-three children and young persons with a congenital long QT syndrome were identified; the median age at the time of referral was 10 years (range 4 days to 19 years) and 14 patients (61%) had a family history of the syndrome. Among the 19 patients with symptoms, the initial symptom was syncope in 13 (69%), aborted sudden death in 5 (26%) and near drowning in 1 (5%). There were three deaths during a combined follow-up period of 67 patient-years (average annual mortality rate 4.5%). Patients who did not respond to therapy with a beta-adrenergic blocker and those who died were significantly …

Alcohol Advertising at the Beach: Insights From Young People in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Advertising and marketing by the alcohol industry serve to normalise alcohol use, with exposure to alcohol advertising linked to earlier and riskier drinking among young people. Advertising that portrays alcohol use in and around waterways is of particular concern, with one in five fatal drownings being associated with alcohol. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the types of alcohol advertising that young people were exposed to, and to determine whether exposure to alcohol advertising was related to their alcohol use in aquatic environments. METHODS: We surveyed 102 young peo…

Fatal accidents in neonatal pterosaurs and selective sampling in the Solnhofen fossil assemblage.

The Upper Jurassic Solnhofen Archipelago of Germany has yielded a pterosaur assemblage that has long underpinned and continues to dominate much of our understanding of these flying reptiles. Knowledge of how this assemblage was shaped by processes of fossilization, critical for generating robust paleobiological hypotheses, remains limited. Here, we combine fatal trauma case studies with quantitative taphonomic data to reveal two distinct fossilization pathways. Catastrophic storms played a primary role, preferentially sampling small, immature pterosaurs. Storms caused these pterosaurs to drown
