Imaging of ectopic thyroid tissue and thyroglossal duct cysts.

When a child or young adult presents with a mass in the anterior portion of the neck, diagnostic considerations include a thyroglossal duct cyst and ectopic thyroid tissue. These entities are often suspected clinically, and imaging provides an opportunity to evaluate the extent, confirm the diagnosis, and evaluate for complications. Imaging characteristics of a thyroglossal duct cyst as a simple cyst and of ectopic thyroid tissue as a hyperattenuating soft-tissue mass can help identify these lesions at computed tomography (CT); however, intrinsic magnetic resonance, CT, and ultrasonographic im

Elevated sperm DNA fragmentation is associated with embryonic developmental attrition after fertilization in conventional IVF cycles.

BACKGROUND: The influence of sperm DNA fragmentation on conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes remains controversial, particularly regarding whether its embryological relevance is expressed during fertilization or subsequent embryo development. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and stage-specific embryological transition outcomes in a retrospective cohort of first eligible conventional IVF cycles. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1,423 first eligible conventional IVF cycles selected from fresh oocyte-retrieval

The Parasympathetic Root of the Submandibular Ganglion: A Review.

The submandibular ganglion is a small fusiform-shaped cluster of cell bodies of the parasympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic innervation of the submandibular gland is not only responsible for the secretion of saliva, but it also plays a main role in the development and regeneration of the gland. The parasympathetic root of the submandibular ganglion or the posterior branch of the lingual nerve to the submandibular ganglion is one of three roots of the submandibular ganglion. Using standard search engines (PubMed, Google), papers in English discussing the anatomy, embryology, variations,…

Ectopic Vas Deferens in a Male Infant.

Vas deferens ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly associated with urinary tract and anorectal anomalies. It is important to recognize the complex embryology of the reproductive, urinary, and lower enteric systems to understand how these processes can go awry.1 As the ureteric bud arises from the mesonephric duct, a failure of the channel that connects the two to obliterate can produce an ectopic vas deferens connected to the ureter or bladder.2 We present a 2-month-old male with vas deferens ectopia. Our patient uniquely did not present with associated anorectal anomalies or urinary tract symp…

A case presentation with tranverse testicular ectopia.

Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is a rare congenital anomaly, in which both gonads migrate toward the same hemiscrotum with increased risk of testicular malignancy and associated with various abnormalities. Proper knowledge and imaging techniques are essential in diagnosis. Ultrasonography(USG) offer an easy, safe, and convenient alternative in assessment of TTE. We report a case of 41-year-male with infertility, who presented with left reducible inguinal hernia and right undescended testis. Final diagnosis was confirmed by USG and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). The embryology, imaging f…

The ectopic accessory parotid system: A new patient, studied through magnetic resonance imaging.

The ectopic accessory parotid system (EAPS) connotes an extra parotid tissue with its ductal outlet that is morphologically distinct from the main parotid gland and its drainage system. Clinically presenting as a saliva-draining cheek fistula near the oral commissure, this rare congenital anomaly is almost always associated with ipsilateral preauricular appendages and occasional mandibular hypoplasia, and is considered a variant of the oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum. This report discusses the embryology, clinical details, and management aspects in a new patient, highlighting the role of mag…

Concomitant Anterior and Posterior Urethral Valves: A Comprehensive Review of Literature.

Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) are the most common cause of infravesical obstruction in children, whereas anterior urethral valves and/or diverticula (AUV/D) are less commonly encountered. Concomitant AUV/D and PUV is believed to be very rare and may be missed on the initial evaluation. In this review, we provide brief information on embryology of AUV/D and PUV to explain the concurrent presence of these anomalies. We also summarize the information on published cases of concomitant AUV/D and PUV in the English literature with a special focus on diagnosis and the importance of both voiding cy…

Müllerian duct and related anomalies in children and adolescents.

Although many Müllerian duct anomalies do not require treatment, surgical intervention is sometimes necessary to enable sexual activity or to preserve fertility. The identification of these anomalies is important for optimal clinical management or surgical treatment. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a robust method for adequately evaluating and characterizing uterine and vaginal anomalies. The information provided by MR imaging allows for a more complete understanding of the malformation, facilitating management decisions and potentially changing the outcome. In this article, the embryology,…
