Ten patients with large melanomas and one patient with recurrent retinoblastoma were treated with combined localized current field (LCF) hyperthermia and iodine 125 irradiation delivered by episcleral plaque. Tumors were heated to 43 degrees to 45 degrees C for 28 to 45 minutes. Localized current field hyperthermia when combined with irradiation appeared to induce rapid tumor necrosis. The expression of lysyl oxidase (LOX) was assessed using immunohistochemical staining in tissue samples from the postequatorial region of the choroid and uveal melanoma obtained from human eyes enucleated for medical reasons (n = 15). Progressive corneal destruction of varying causes can result in pathologic changes that are incompatible with globe survival. Reconstructive keratoplasty and scleroplasty, in combination with other procedures, can be attempted as an alternative to enucleation, evisceration or spontaneous phthisis bulbi. The results of 50 reconstructive keratoplasties in 36 patients with severe corneal destruction are presented with one- to twenty-two year follow-up. Ninety-nine percent of the eyes were salvaged, 69% have clear grafts, 86% are visually improved and 51% achieved acuity of 20/100 or better.
