Impact of Perioperative Brain Injury and Development on Feeding Modality in Infants With Single Ventricle Heart Disease.

Background Tube-assisted feeding in infancy is common in patients with single-ventricle physiology ( SVP ). Postnatal brain development is delayed, and injury is common, in patients with SVP . The role of brain findings in feeding outcomes remains unclear. We sought to determine the association between neonatal perioperative brain injury and postnatal brain maturation with feeding-tube dependency in patients with SVP at neonatal discharge and just before the stage-2 palliation. Methods and Results We evaluated a cohort of 48 term neonates with SVP who underwent pre- and postoperative brain mag

Trajectories of class-switching-related egg and cow's milk allergen-specific immunoglobulin isotype formation and its modification by eczema with low- and high-affinity immunoglobulin E during early infancy.

INTRODUCTION: Allergen-specific immunoglobulin isotype formation associated with immunoglobulin class-switching during the lactation period is the immunological background for food allergy in infants. We analyzed the serial changes in the production of feeding type-related egg- and milk-specific immunoglobulin isotypes from birth to 6 months of age with or without eczema in 84 infants. METHODS: Allergen-specific immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1), IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgA, and IgE levels of hen's egg and bovine milk were measured in cord blood and blood samples from infants at 2, 4, and 6 months of age by

From reactive to proactive tube feeding during chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer: A clinical prediction model-based approach.

OBJECTIVES: Feeding tubes are placed unnecessarily in a proportion of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) when prophylactic tube placement protocols are used. This may have a negative impact on the risk of long-term dysphagia. Reactive tube placement protocols, on the other hand, might result in weight loss and treatment interruption. The objective of this study is to identify patients at risk for prolonged tube dependency in order to implement a personalized strategy regarding proactive tube placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was perf

Early Feeding Practices and Weight Status at One Year of Age: A Comparison of Hispanic Immigrant Mother-Infant Dyads with Participants of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic preschoolers have higher rates of BMI ≥85th percentile than any other racial/ethnic group. To identify underpinnings of this disparity, we compared early feeding practices and subsequent weight status for a sample of infants of low-income, Hispanic immigrant mothers with participants from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II (IFPS II). METHODS: Proyecto de Bebés Hispanos Saludables (PBHS) collected medical record data for mother-infant dyads (n = 550) from a large pediatric clinic for low-income families and merged it with IFPS II data (n = 1502) to compare early feeding

Long-term feeding on powdered food causes hyperglycemia and signs of systemic illness in mice.

AIMS: Dietary habits are crucial factors affecting metabolic homeostasis. However, few animal experiments have addressed the effects of long-term feeding with soft food on parameters reflecting systemic health. MAIN METHODS: Using mice, we compared the effects of short (3 days) and long (17 weeks from weaning) feeding periods between powdered food and normal pellet food on the levels of blood glucose, serum levels of insulin, catecholamines, and corticosterone, blood pressure, and/or social interaction behaviors. In addition, the effects of a human glucagon-like peptide-1 analog, liraglutide

Efficacy of intermediate-dose oral erythromycin on very low birth weight infants with feeding intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Erythromycin is generally used as a prokinetic agent for the treatment of feeding intolerance in preterm infants; however, results from previous studies significantly vary due to different medication dosages, routes of administration, and therapy durations. The effectiveness and safety of intermediate-dose oral erythromycin in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with feeding intolerance was examined in this study. METHODS: Between November 2007 and August 2009, 45 VLBW infants with feeding intolerance, who were all at least 14 days old, were randomly allocated to a treatment grou

Early enteral nutrition in severe acute pancreatitis: a prospective randomized controlled trial comparing nasojejunal and nasogastric routes.

PURPOSE: Enteral nutrition (EN) is effective, easy to provide, cheaper, and associated with fewer complications in comparison with parenteral nutrition in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). However, the nasogastric (NG) route for enteral supplements still remains to be established, and most studies have used the nasojejunal (NJ) route. The purpose of this study was to compare early NJ with NG feeding in SAP. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 31 patients with SAP were randomized to feeding by either NG (15 patients) or NJ (16 patients). A semi-elemental formula was used through an enteral tube in
