Pesticide residues in canned foods, fruits, and vegetables: the application of Supercritical Fluid Extraction and chromatographic techniques in the analysis.

Multiple pesticide residues have been observed in some samples of canned foods, frozen vegetables, and fruit jam, which put the health of the consumers at risk of adverse effects. It is quite apparent that such a state of affairs calls for the need of more accurate, cost-effective, and rapid analytical techniques capable of detecting the minimum concentrations of the multiple pesticide residues. The aims of this paper were first, to determine the effectiveness of the use of Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) and Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) techniques in the analysis of the level

Serial analysis of gene expression in the skeletal muscles of zebrafish fed with a methylmercury-contaminated diet.

Mercury (Hg) is a widespread environmental contaminant and its organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), has been known as a potent neurotoxic since the Minamata tragedy. In the Amazonian basin, gold mining leads to MeHg biomagnification all along the food web, culminating in piscivorous fish, ultimately responsible for contamination of human beings through fish consumption. In order to assess the biological impact of dietary MeHg on fish at the genome scale, we contaminated zebrafish with MeHg-contaminated food for 25 days (13.5 microg of Hg/g of food). A serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) w

Natural occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in marketed foods and risk estimates of dietary exposure in Koreans.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is an unavoidable food contaminant. To evaluate the potential health risk of AFB1 to Koreans posed by food consumption, we determined the natural occurrence of AFB1 in food and estimated the excess risk for liver cancer through dietary exposure to AFB1. A total of 694 food samples collected from six different regions of South Korea were analyzed for their AFB, content. One hundred four of the 694 samples were found to give positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) readings for AFB1 and were further investigated with high-performance liquid chromatography. Thirty-tw

Pathogenic Potential and Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Staphylococcus aureus in Milk and Beef from the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major foodborne pathogen and commensal of the skin and mucous membranes of animals and humans. Its virulence relies on the production of a variety of toxins resistant to denaturing conditions. Increasing reports of S. aureus food poisoning and contamination of foods of animal origin elsewhere necessitates the investigation of these foods in Cameroon, to implement safety measures. This cross-sectional study evaluated S. aureus contamination in milk and beef in the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon, where cow milk is usually not pasteurized before consumption

DNA damage measured by the single-cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay in mammals fed with mussels contaminated by the 'Erika' oil-spill.

This research aimed to estimate potential genotoxicity for consumers resulting from the ingestion of seafood contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released into the marine environment after the 'Erika' shipwreck along the coasts of south Brittany, in France. Mussels (Mytilus sp.) collected from sites on the Atlantic coast that were affected by the oil slick in various degrees, were used to feed rats daily for 2 and 4 weeks. DNA damage was measured by use of the Comet assay in the liver, bone marrow and blood of rats receiving food contaminated with 312 microg of 16PAHs/kg d

Effect of prevention measures on incidence of human listeriosis, France, 1987-1997.

To assess the impact of preventive measures by the food industry, we analyzed food monitoring data as well as trends in the incidence of listeriosis estimated through three independent sources: the National Reference Center of Listeriosis; a laboratory-based active surveillance network; and two consecutive nationwide surveys of public hospital laboratories. From 1987 to 1997, the incidence of listeriosis decreased by an estimated 68%. A substantial reduction in the proportion of Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated products was observed at the retail level. The temporal relationship between pre

A comparison of metal concentrations in vegetables from urban community gardens and groceries in response to community research.

Farmers in urban community gardens (UCGs) grow a variety of vegetables to have access to nutritious food that may be scarce, to enjoy the benefits of nature, and as political resistance to numerous forms of environmental injustice. These injustices are many and include food deserts, contamination, lack of green spaces, and loss of connection to land. To subvert these injustices, many community farmers choose to grow their own produce rather than to purchase produce from grocery stores. As part of an ongoing study on contamination in UCGs, partnering farmers asked our research team to analyze t

Arsenic contamination in Kolkata metropolitan city: perspective of transportation of agricultural products from arsenic-endemic areas.

Arsenic exposure route for humans is through the drinking of contaminated water and intake of arsenic-contaminated foods, particularly in arsenic-exposed areas of Bengal delta. Transport of the arsenic-contaminated crops and vegetables grown using arsenic-contaminated groundwater and soil in arsenic-exposed areas to the uncontaminated sites and consequent dietary intakes leads to great threats for the population residing in non-endemic areas with respect to consumption of arsenic through drinking water. We have studied the food materials collected from 30 families and their dietary habits, app

Bisphenol A (BPA) in U.S. food.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used for lining metal cans and in polycarbonate plastics, such as baby bottles. In rodents, BPA is associated with early sexual maturation, altered behavior, and effects on prostate and mammary glands. In humans, BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction in exposed workers. Food is a major exposure source. We know of no studies reporting BPA in U.S. fresh food, canned food, and food in plastic packaging in peer reviewed journals. We measured BPA levels in 105 fresh and canned foods, foods sold in plastic packaging, and
