Volumetric Variability of the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Reflects the Propensity for Engaging in High-Stakes Gambling Behavior.

The human ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) has been traditionally associated with decision-making under risk. Neuroimaging studies of … increased tendency for engaging in high-stakes gambling. These results converge with findings from functional neuroimaging and brain lesion studies of vmPFC, and further extend them to show that normative variability in brain structure could also underpin risk-taking behavior.

Early- and late-onset Alzheimer disease: Are they the same entity?

Early-onset Alzheimer disease (EOAD), which presents in patients younger than 65 years, has frequently been described as having different fe … imer-type features will be more dense and widespread in neuropathology studies, with structural and functional neuroimaging showing greater and more diffuse atrophy extending to neocortical areas (especially the precuneus). In conclusion, available evidence suggests that EOAD and LOAD are 2 different forms of a single entity. LOAD is likely to be influenced by ageing-rel …

Response inhibition and interference control in obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.

Over the past 20 years, motor response inhibition and interference control have received considerable scientific effort and attention, due to their important role in behavior and the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. Results of neuroimaging studies indicate that motor response inhibition and interference control are dependent on cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuits. Structural and functional abnormalities within the CSTC circuits have been reported for many neuropsychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders, such as attention

Neuroimaging correlates of pharmacological and psychological treatments for specific phobia.

Specific phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by irrational fear and avoidance of specific things or situations, interfering significantly with the patients' daily life. Treatment for the disorder consists of both pharmacological and psychological approaches, mainly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Neuroimaging techniques have been used in an attempt to improve our understanding of the neurobiology of SP and of the effects of treatment options available. This review describes the design and results of eight articles investigating the neuroimaging correlates of pharmacological and psy

Neural basis of a multidimensional model of body image distortion in anorexia nervosa.

Body image distortion is a key symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN). The majority of the neuroimaging studies on body image distortion in AN conceptualized it as an unidimensional symptom. However, behavioural research considers such symptom as a multidimensional construct. Our paper systematically reviews the functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) studies on body image distortion in AN and classifies them according to a speculative model of body image distortion, that consists of the three most widely accepted components in the behavioural research: perceptive, affective and cognitive. We found tha

Insights into brain development from neurogenetic syndromes: evidence from fragile X syndrome, Williams syndrome, Turner syndrome and velocardiofacial syndrome.

Over the past few decades, behavioral, neuroimaging and molecular studies of neurogenetic conditions, such as Williams, fragile X, Turner and velocardiofacial (22q11.2 deletion) syndromes, have led to important insights regarding brain development. These investigations allow researchers to examine "experiments of nature" in which the deletion or alteration of one gene or a contiguous set of genes can be linked to aberrant brain structure or function. Converging evidence across multiple imaging modalities has now begun to highlight the abnormal neural circuitry characterizing many individual ne

[Neuromagnetic correlates of dyslexia].

Dyslexia was first described over a century ago and since then many theories have been put forward to explain it, but we still do not have one single unified theory that explains the problem. Furthermore, over the years a great deal of research work has also been carried out that relates dyslexia with disorders in different brain structures, and yet we still do not have a clear idea of exactly which neurophysiological mechanisms are involved. It has been claimed, however, that the disorder may be caused by specific deficits in the left frontotemporal region or atypical asymmetries in the left

Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in childhood epilepsy.

The success of epilepsy surgery is determined strongly by the precise location of the epileptogenic focus. The information from clinical and electrophysiological data needs to be strengthened by functional neuroimaging techniques. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) available locally has proved useful as a localising investigation. It evaluates the regional cerebral blood flow and the comparison between ictal and interictal blood flow on SPECT has proved to be a sensitive nuclear marker for the site of seizure onset. Many studies justify the utility of SPECT in localising lesion…

Volumetric neuroimaging in children with neurodevelopmental disorders--mapping the brain and behavior.

The recent volumetric neuroimaging studies in children with fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome (DS), Rett syndrome (RS), and Tourette syndrome (TS) were reviewed. Neuroimaging studies and cognitive and behavioral phenotypes pertinent to each disorder were reviewed within the context of current knowledge of their neurobiological mechanisms. The mainly involved brain regions in fragile X syndrome are the cerebellar vermis, temporal areas, and the caudate nucleus which may be related to autistic tendency, problems of memory and language and deficits in executive function, respectively. The prefere

Dynamics of language reorganization after left temporo-parietal and frontal stroke.

The loss and recovery of language functions are still incompletely understood. This longitudinal functional MRI study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying language recovery in patients with post-stroke aphasia putting particular emphasis on the impact of lesion site. To identify patterns of language-related activation, an auditory functional MRI sentence comprehension paradigm was administered to patients with circumscribed lesions of either left frontal (n = 17) or temporo-parietal (n = 17) cortex. Patients were examined repeatedly during the acute (≤1 week, t1), subacute (1-2 weeks,

Decreased functional connectivity in the fronto-parietal network in children with mood disorders compared to children with dyslexia during rest: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 separates the diagnostic criteria for mood and behavioral disorders. Both types of disorders share neurocognitive deficits of executive function and reading difficulties in childhood. Children with dyslexia also have executive function deficits, revealing a role of executive function circuitry in reading. The aim of the current study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship of functional connectivity within the fronto-parietal and cingulo-opercular cognitive control networks to reading measures for children with mood disorders, behavioral disorders, dys

Ruminative brooding is associated with salience network coherence in early pubertal youth.

Rumination, and particularly ruminative brooding, perpetuates dysphoric mood states and contributes to the emergence of depression. Studies of adults and older adolescents have characterized the association between rumination and intrinsic functional connectivity within default mode (DMN), salience (SN) and executive control (ECN) networks; we know little, however, about the brain network basis of rumination during early puberty, a sensitive period for network reorganization. 112 early puberty boys and girls completed resting-state scans, the Ruminative Response Scale, and the Youth Self-Repor

Multiple changes of functional connectivity between sensorimotor areas in focal hand dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Task-specific focal hand dystonia impairs the control of arm muscles during fine motor skills such as writing (writer's cramp (WC)). Functional imaging found abnormal task-related activation of sensorimotor areas in this disorder, but little is known on their functional connectivity (FC). METHODS: Resting-state fMRI and regions of interest (ROI)-voxel cross-correlation analyses were used for systematically analysing the FC between multiple ROIs within the cerebello-basal ganglia-thalamocortical network in 15 patients with right-sided WC and 15 healthy volunteers. RESULTS: Patient

Asymmetric loss of parietal activity causes spatial bias in prodromal and mild Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Alzheimer's disease (AD), loss of effective neuronal activity is reflected by cortical glucose hypometabolism. Hypometabolism in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is among the first in vivo signs of AD; however, its functional impact on large-scale brain mechanisms and behavior is poorly understood. The lateral PPC contributes to spatial attention constituting a basic function of the human brain. We hypothesized 1) that lateral PPC hypometabolism is associated with impaired spatial attention in very early AD and 2) that impaired competition of effective neuronal activity acros

Brainstem reflexes in neuro-Behçet disease.

We hypothesized that brainstem responses may allow detection of functional brainstem changes in patients with neuro-Behçet Disease (NBD). Thus, we recorded electrically-induced blink reflex (eBR), auditory blink reflex (aBR) and electrically-induced masseter inhibitory reflex (eMIR) in 16patients with NBD. However, these neurophysiological tests proved to have a poor overall sensitivity compared to neuroimaging for the diagnosis of brainstem lesions. They also showed low sensitivity for the differential diagnosis of focal pontine lesion versus diffuse brainstem disease in NBD.

Mild cognitive impairment: conceptual issues and structural and functional brain correlates.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prevalent condition among older adults that carries a high risk of progression to Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. Given the potential for delaying or preventing the onset of dementia, efforts aimed at early detection and early intervention are important. The current paper reviews the conceptualization and diagnosis of MCI, assessment of memory complaints and deficits in the elderly, as well as recent research on the neurobiological basis of the disorder, including neurochemical, structural, and functional neuroimaging findings.

Contributions of neuroimaging to understanding sex differences in cocaine abuse.

A consistent observation in drug abuse research is that males and females show differences in their response to drugs of abuse. In order to understand the neurobiology underlying cocaine abuse and effective treatments, it is important to consider the role of sex differences. Sex hormones have been investigated in both behavioral and molecular studies, but further evidence addressing drug abuse and dependence in both sexes would expand our knowledge of sex differences in response to drugs of abuse. Neuroimaging is a powerful tool that can offer insight into the biological bases of these differe

Neuroimaging in sleep medicine.

The development of neuroimaging techniques has made possible the characterization of cerebral function throughout the sleep-wake cycle in normal human subjects. Indeed, human brain activity during sleep is segregated within specific cortical and subcortical areas in relation to the sleep stage, sleep physiological events and previous waking activity. This approach has allowed sleep physiological theories developed from animal data to be confirmed, but has also introduced original concepts about the neurobiological mechanisms of sleep, dreams and memory in humans. In contrast, at present, few n
