Associations Between Body Composition and Bone Health in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

More clarification on the associations between children's and adolescents' lean and fat mass (LM and FM) on the one hand and their bone health on the other hand is needed, given the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity in this population. This systematic literature review aimed to describe the current evidence on these associations. Data sources were Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library (up to November 2014). Search items included LM, FM, children and adolescents (0-18 years), bone health measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and peripheral quantitative compu

Osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis: findings in the metacarpal, spine, and hip and a study of the determinants of both localized and generalized osteopenia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between axial and peripheral bone density in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared to controls. To study risk factors for axial and peripheral bone loss in RA. METHODS: Twenty women with RA and 20 age matched controls underwent dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the spine and hip and microradioscopy of the hands in order to quantify the combined cortical thickness (CCT) of the 2nd metacarpal. Sharp's method was used to assess the degree of joint space narrowing and erosions. RESULTS: Compared to controls, the RA group had significant

Lumbar facet angle tropism and hand and foot dominance in patients with isthmic spondylolysis.

PURPOSE: Isthmic spondylolysis Early-stage lumbar spondylolysis (ESS) is common in adolescents. The facet joint tropism has been reported to affect spondylolysis in two-dimensional analyses. However, more detailed 3D analyses of facet joint tropism in unilateral spondylolysis are not reported. Here, we sought to investigate the relationship between facet joint tropism, hand and foot dominance, and very early to early stage isthmic spondylolysis ESS using a three-dimensional (3D) bone model. METHODS: We studied 70 adolescent patients (55 males, 15 females) with unilateral very early spondylol

Mirror-image solitary bone cyst of the humerus in a pair of mirror-image monozygotic twins.

Mirror-image solitary bone cysts (SBCs) of the humerus in a pair of mirror-image monozygotic twins are presented. One twin was right-handed and had SBC at the left humerus. The other twin was left-handed and had SBC at the right humerus. The directions of the whirl of hair on their heads were opposite with each other. These findings strongly suggest cytogenetic factors in the aetiology or pathogenesis of SBC.

[Degenerative changes in the hand and wrist in elite MMA fighting - an MRI study in comparison to boxing].

OBJECTIVE: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combination of multiple combat sports. Acute injuries in MMA are well known and have been broadly described. However, there is little knowledge about degenerative changes in the musculoskeletal system. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of techniques used in MMA on the occurrence of degenerative changes in the hand and wrist in comparison to classical boxing. METHODS: 11 MMA fighters and 10 boxers with chronic wrist pain were clinically examined. Age, weight, years of training, number of fights, level of competition and weekly hours of

[Multifocal tuberculous dactylitis: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous dactylitis (TD) is a rare disorder. It is the source of a diagnostic hardship as it is difficult to distinguish from other lesions. We report an unusual case with multiple affected sites both in hands and the right big toe. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old female initially presented with two painful tumefactions affecting the left third finger and the right middle finger. These tumefactions had been present for two months. Conventional radiography and computed tomography of the hand revealed soft tissue swelling with bone expansion and cortical destruction in the proximal,

Rare Case of Open Comminuted Scaphoid Fracture Dislocation: Treatment With Free Bone Graft and Locking Plate.

To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature of an open comminuted scaphoid fracture dislocation. We present such a rare case. The case report illustrates the case of a 58-year-old right-handed press operator who injured his left wrist when his hand got caught in a press machine. He received initial treatment at another hospital and was subsequently referred to our hospital. Eight days after the injury, surgery was performed under the brachial plexus block. Successful bone fusion was achieved through volar locking plate fixation, primary free bone grafting from the radi

Autophagy and Myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy. It is characterized by the abnormal clonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow and the secretion of a large number of monoclonal immunoglobulins or light chains, causing bone destruction, elevated blood calcium levels, anemia, and renal dysfunction. Autophagy has a dual role in the autophagy of myeloma cells. On the one hand, autophagy eliminates abnormal proteins and organelles in cells, prevents gene damage, and inhibits tumorigenesis. On the other hand, once tumors are formed, tumor cells use autophagy to ensure their su

Distal phalangeal bone cysts: differentiation of enchondromata and epidermal cysts.

Enchondromas are common in the hand but less frequent in the distal phalanges. Epidermal cysts are rare in the hand but when they occur can be difficult to differentiate from enchondromas both clinically and radiologically. Our review of seven distal phalangeal bone lesions treated over 7 years included four enchondromas and three epidermal cysts. The patients with epidermal cysts all had a history of previous penetrating trauma 5-8 years earlier. One patient with an enchondroma had a history of a penetrating injury. Patients presenting with distal phalangeal lesions and a history of previous

Elderly kendo (Japanese fencing) player with Kienböck's disease in one wrist and Preiser's disease in the other wrist: a case report.

Elderly patients suffering from avascular necrosis of a carpal bone in both wrists are extremely rare. We report a case of an elderly kendo (Japanese fencing) competitor who sustained Preiser's disease in the left hand following the occurrence of Kienböck's disease in the right hand. The current case demonstrates the importance of raising awareness of these diseases as potential sports-related problems in the elderly.

Haemophiliac hands--a three year follow-up study.

The total absence of literature regarding the affects of haemophilia on the hand prompted this three year study at the Israel National Haemophilia Centre. The hands of all haemophiliacs were examined and X-rayed at the time of their annual check-up. Apart from a number of established Volkmann's contractures in elderly patients and multiple bone cysts of the carpus, surprisingly little pathology was found. When considering the extensive damage done to the musculoskeletal system by this haemarthritic pathogenesis it is astounding how the hand, with its multiple small joints, constant movement an

Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Patients of Neonatal and Pediatric Age Undergoing Orthopedic and Hand Surgery: A RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method Consensus Study.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a potential complication in any type of surgery and can occur up to one year after the procedure in the case of implant placement. In the field of orthopedic and hand surgery, the rate of SSIs is a relevant issue, considering the need for the placement of synthesis devices and the type of some interventions (e.g., exposed fractures). This work aims to provide guidance on the management of peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis for the pediatric and neonatal population undergoing orthopedic and hand surgery in order to standardize the management of patie

Flexibility of the Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Perforator Free Flap for Hand Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator (SCIP) flap has several advantages in hand reconstruction. It is thin and pliable, the extensive branching of the arterial system allows for multiple components, and the donor site can be closed inconspicuously. This article reports our experience using the SCIP flap for hand reconstruction, and we highlight the flexibility of the SCIP for extended and chimeric flaps. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study from November 2022 to January 2024 of patients with complex hand defects (exposure and/or defect of the bone or te

Hand Enchondromas Treated with Curettage: a Single Institution Experience and Literature Review.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Hand enchondromas are benign cartilage bone tumors. Curettage represents the actual gold standard for hand enchondromas. Little has been written about the effectiveness of curettage on hand functionality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated the effectiveness of curettage and bone grafting on the hand. For each case, we compared the pre-operative and post-operative QuickDASH of the treated limb. The final functional outcome was also evaluated by calculating the affected finger's Total Active Movement (TAM). Complications and local recurrences w

Prediction of radiographic progression in synovitis-positive joints on maximum intensity projection of magnetic resonance imaging in rheumatoid arthritis.

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with maximum intensity projection (MRI-MIP) is an easy, useful imaging method to evaluate synovitis in rheumatoid hands. However, the prognosis of synovitis-positive joints on MRI-MIP has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between synovitis visualized by MRI-MIP and joint destruction on X-rays in rheumatoid hands. The wrists, metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints, and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints of both hands (500 joints in total) were evaluated in 25 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Synovitis was score
