HIV and HCV seroincidence, associated factors and drug use in people who inject drugs, SurvUDI network, eastern central Canada, 1995-2020.

BACKGROUND: The SurvUDI network is a biobehavioural survey among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Eastern Central Canada. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to describe HIV and HCV seroincidence trends, associated factors and changes in drug use behaviours. METHODS: The network was initiated in 1995 and targets hard-to-reach, mostly out-of- treatment PWID. Participants were recruited mostly in harm reduction programs, completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire, provided a sample of gingival exudate for HIV and HCV antibody testing and were identified using an encrypted code allowing i…

The impact of COVID-19 public health measures on attendance and overdose at supervised injecting facilities in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted service provision of harm reduction and drug treatment services for people who inject drugs in many countries. The two supervised injecting facilities (SIFs) in Sydney and Melbourne were differentially impacted by the pandemic, requiring local procedural changes in each service. We aimed to examine the impact of pandemic responses (including restrictions on movement, known as 'lockdowns') on service use and key parameters such as client reports of drug injected and recorded overdose rates. STUDY DESIGN: Time series analysis of weekly client visits a…

Restructuring personal networks with a Motivational Interviewing social network intervention to assist the transition out of homelessness: A randomized control pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Social relationships play a key role in both substance use and homelessness. Transitioning out of homelessness often requires reduction in substance use as well as changes in social networks. A social network-based behavior change intervention that targets changes personal social networks may assist the transition out of homelessness. Most behavior change interventions that incorporate social networks assume a static network. However, people experiencing homelessness who transition into housing programs that use a harm reduction approach experience many changes in their social netw…

American counselors' acceptance of non-abstinence outcome goals for clients diagnosed with co-occurring substance use and other psychiatric disorders.

Previous research has examined clinicians' acceptance of non-abstinence for clients who have a substance use disorder (SUD), but many SUD clients also present with a psychiatric disorder. To evaluate the acceptability of non-abstinence as a final outcome goal for clients with co-occurring diagnoses, we recruited a nationwide sample of 751 American substance abuse counselors to complete a web-based questionnaire. Respondents rated the acceptability of limited/moderate consumption by clients diagnosed with each of 18 co-occurring disorders: three psychiatric disorders (Major Depressive Disorder,

Do needle and syringe programs reduce risky behaviours among people who inject drugs in Kermanshah City, Iran? A coarsened exact matching approach.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: In this study, we used a 'coarsened exact matching' method to evaluate the relationship between two levels of needle and syringe program (NSP) utilisation and HIV-related risk behaviours among people who inject drugs (PWID). DESIGN AND METHODS: Using snowball sampling, we recruited 500 PWID (all male) in Kermanshah City, Iran between September and December 2014 in a cross-sectional survey. We categorised participants into two groups, including high (i.e. receiving 60% or more of their syringes from an NSP) and low (i.e. receiving less than 60% of their syringes from NSP

Harm avoidance is associated with progression of parkinsonism in community-dwelling older adults: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that harm avoidance, a trait associated with behavioral inhibition, is associated with the rate of change in parkinsonism in older adults. METHODS: At baseline harm avoidance was assessed with a standard self-report instrument in 969 older people without dementia participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal community-based cohort study. Parkinsonism was assessed annually with a modified version of the motor section of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (mUPDRS). RESULTS: Average follow-up was 5 years. A marginalized zero-inflated Poisson regression model with overall exposure effects.

The zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression model is often employed in public health research to examine the relationships between exposures of interest and a count outcome exhibiting many zeros, in excess of the amount expected under sampling from a Poisson distribution. The regression coefficients of the ZIP model have latent class interpretations, which correspond to a susceptible subpopulation at risk for the condition with counts generated from a Poisson distribution and a non-susceptible subpopulation that provides the extra or excess zeros. The ZIP model parameters, however, are not well

Awake at the switch: improving fish consumption advisories for at-risk women.

Eating fish provides health benefits; however, nearly all fish contain at least some methylmercury which can impair human health. While government agencies have been issuing fish consumption advisories for 40 years, recent evaluation efforts highlight their poor performance. The benefit of an advisory can be measured by its ability to inform consumers as to both the positive and negative attributes of their potential choices, leading to appropriate changes in behavior. Because of the health benefits, fish advisories should not reduce fish consumption, even among at-risk individuals, but should

Association between A218C polymorphism of the tryptophan-hydroxylase-1 gene, harm avoidance and binge eating behavior in bulimia nervosa.

Genes involved in serotonin transmission are likely involved in the biological predisposition to bulimia nervosa. We investigated whether the A218C polymorphism of the tryptophan-hydroxylase-1 gene was associated to bulimia nervosa and/or to some phenotypic aspects of the disorder. One hundred eighty Caucasian women (91 patients with bulimia nervosa and 89 healthy controls) were enrolled into the study. They underwent a blood sample collection for A218C polymorphism of the tryptophan-hydroxylase-1 genotyping and a clinical evaluation assessing comorbidity for Axis I and II psychiatric disorder
