Prevalence and pattern of lower extremity injuries due to road traffic crashes in Fako Division, Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Low and middle income countries are disproportionately affected with road traffic injuries and the lower extremity is one of the most affected anatomical body parts. There exist very limited data on the pattern of lower extremity injuries in the Cameroon especially in the South West Region. We therefore, hypothesized that lower limb injuries are common in road traffic crashes and motorized two wheelers are the commonest cause. METHODS: This was a hospital based prospective, cross sectional study. It involved four hospitals (Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals, Baptist hospital Mut

[Recurring post-traumatic growing skull fracture].

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fracture, also known as post-traumatic bone absorption or leptomeningeal cyst, is a rare complication of traumatic brain injuries and occurs almost exclusively in children under 3 years of age. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 6-month-old child who presented, two months after an apparently unimportant traumatic skull injury, persistence of left temporoparietooccipital cephalohaematoma with no other signs. A transfontanellar ultrasonography scan revealed a bone defect with brain herniation, and computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging also confirme

Equestrian injury is costly, disabling, and frequently preventable: the imperative for improved safety awareness.

Horse-related injury can be severe and disabling. We investigated the causes, severity, and costs of equestrian injury with the goal of injury prevention. A retrospective review of horse-related injuries from 2001 to 2008 identified 231 patients with a mean age of 38 years and a mean Injury Severity Score of 11 (range, 1 to 45). Mean length of stay was 5.5 days. Fifty-nine patients (25%) required 84 surgeries. Helmet use was 20 per cent and of the 172 patients not wearing a helmet while mounted, 38 per cent received potentially preventable head injuries. There were three deaths of which two we

Self-reported alcohol use is an independent risk factor for head and brain injury among cyclists but does not confound helmets' protective effect.

BACKGROUND: Head and brain injury accounts for most morbidity and mortality related to bicycle accidents, much of which can be mitigated by helmet use; but other factors, such as alcohol use and type of accident, also correlate with injury. OBJECTIVE: To examine the correlation between alcohol use, helmet use, riding environment, and rider characteristics, with the presence of head and severity of brain injury in a group of bicycle riders presenting to a regional trauma center after an accident. METHODS: Data were collected at the bedside and from the medical records for all bicycle accident

Equine-associated maxillofacial injuries: retrospective 5-year analysis.

We explored the relation between the causes of facial injuries in equestrians and the presence or absence of associated injuries. Over a 5-year period we retrospectively reviewed all patients who presented to the John Hunter Hospital, New South Wales, with facial injuries that had resulted from activity with horses. We analysed the rates of hard and soft tissue injuries, and of associated injuries by sex and mechanism. A total of 85 patients were included (50 female and 35 male) with an age range of 2-88 years. There was a significant difference in the rate of maxillofacial and associated inju

OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard: analysis and recommendations.

Just over a year ago, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued the final bloodborne pathogens standard, "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens; Final Rule," which requires healthcare institutions to protect their employees from all occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens." According to OSHA, the only criterion for applying the standard is the likelihood of exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIMs). Thus, the standard is designed to protect all vulnerable personnel, from the clinical engineers who service contaminated equipment to

Analysis of Diabetic Foot Deformation and Plantar Pressure Distribution of Women at Different Walking Speeds.

Official guidelines state that suitable physical activity is recommended for patients with diabetes mellitus. However, since walking at a rapid pace could be associated with increased plantar pressure and potential foot pain, the footwear condition is particularly important for optimal foot protection in order to reduce the risk of tissue injury and ulceration of diabetic patients. This study aims to analyze foot deformation and plantar pressure distribution at three different walking speeds (slow, normal, and fast walking) in dynamic situations. The dynamic foot shape of 19 female diabetic pa

Inspiratory impedance effects on hemodynamic responses to orthostasis in normal subjects.

BACKGROUND: Breathing through an impedance threshold device (ITD) might prove effective as a countermeasure against post-spaceflight orthostatic hypotension since it increased blood pressure (BP) and cardiac output in supine human subjects. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that spontaneous breathing through an ITD would attenuate the reduction in stroke volume and BP during orthostasis in human subjects. METHODS: There were 19 volunteers (10 men, 9 women) who completed two 80 degrees head-up tilt (HUT) protocols with (active) and without (sham control) an ITD set to open at -7 cm H2O pres

Choice of motorcycle helmet makes a difference: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Although many states mandate that motorcyclists wear helmets, their laws do not indicate which type of helmet should be used. In addition, there are no prospective studies in the literature evaluating patterns of injuries as they relate to helmet type. The hypothesis in this study was that full-face helmets (FFHs) reduce craniofacial injuries associated with motorcycle collisions when compared with other helmet types. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at a Level I trauma center to evaluate the efficacy of helmet types relative to craniofacial injuries. Data
