Structure of the O-polysaccharide isolated from Cronobacter sakazakii 767.

The Cronobacter spp., previously known as Enterobacter sakazakii, are Gram-negative enterobacterial pathogens that can cause necrotizing enterocolitis, meningitis, and septicemia with a high mortality rate in neonates. The O-specific polysaccharide (O-PS) was isolated from Cronobacter sakazakii strain 767 and structurally characterized using (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, including two-dimensional DQF-COSY, TOCSY, ROESY, HSQC, and HMBC experiments. Further compositional determination was undertaken using classical chemical methods followed by GLC, and GLC-MS analysis. The repeating unit of O

Breastfeeding in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia during tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Although imatinib is the first-line of therapy for Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), in Japan, it is recommended by the manufacturer that lactating women treated with imatinib mesylate for CML should discontinue breastfeeding their infants. CASE: A 32-year-old pregnant patient was diagnosed with Ph-positive CML at 13 weeks of gestation. She received imatinib (400 mg/day) after 28 weeks of gestation. A female infant was delivered at a gestational age of 35 weeks and 3/7 days after preterm premature rupture of membranes. It was decided to feed o

Pediatric Aspects of Nutrition Interventions for Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction.

Dietary factors may play an important role in the generation of symptoms in children with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs). Although dietary modification may provide successful treatment, there is a relative paucity of controlled trials that have shown the effectiveness of dietary interventions. This study is a narrative review that explores the existing literature on food and pediatric DGBIs. The following have been shown to be beneficial: (i) in infants with colic, removing cow's milk from the infant's diet or from the maternal diet in those who are breastfed; (ii) in infants with

Aluminum bone toxicity in infants may be promoted by iron deficiency.

Aluminum has adverse effects on human health. Aluminum is poorly transported from the gastrointestinal tract, but if the load is high, a significant level of aluminum may be absorbed. There are two main sources of aluminum in infants - adapted formulas (when an infant is predominantly fed with it), and vaccines. After aluminum enters the circulation, it binds to transferrin and remains mainly in the skeleton for a longer period of time. Transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) is highly expressed on osteoblast-like cells whereas the number of TfR1 may additionally rise in case of iron deficiency. Since i

Factors influencing infant feeding practices of Indian immigrant mothers in Australia-a qualitative exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal infant feeding practices in the first 2000 days may increase the risk of childhood overweight, obesity, and chronic disease in later life. Previous literature has shown Indian immigrant mothers have some suboptimal infant feeding practices that do not align with the Australian Infant Feeding Guidelines. There is limited data on factors influencing the feeding practices of Indian immigrant mothers. The present study aims to qualitatively explore the factors influencing infant feeding practices such as breastfeeding, formula feeding, and feeding solids and other liquids am

[Effect of Manasan on fecal pH, fecal microflora and acid-base homeostasis in young infants].

Manasan is an adapted formula for infants on the basis of cow's milk simulating the mode of action of human milk on faeces-pH and faeces microflora. In two temporally separated tests the effect of Manasan-feeding on faeces-pH, faeces flora, and acid-base-homeostasis was controlled and compared with the effect of human milk and Ki-Na-formula. With Manasan fed up from birth or following breast-feeding faeces-pH was to be found in an acid range, clearly. With Ki-Na the faeces-pH was situated in the neutral range. With Manasan the bacteria flora revealed a noteworthy decrease in the number of Bact

Predictors and Risk Scoring of Postnatal Growth Failure in Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants.

Objectives: To identify factors associated with postnatal growth failure (PGF) in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants and to develop a model for the early identification of neonates at risk. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included VLBW infants born between 2014 and 2024. PGF was defined using the 2013 Fenton growth chart. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify predictors of PGF, and a weighted risk score was derived from their relative contributions. Model performance was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: Among 481 VLBW infants,

Flavor Perception and Preference Development in Human Infants.

As most parents and caregivers are aware, feeding children a nutritionally balanced diet can be challenging. Children are born with a biological predisposition to prefer sweet and to avoid bitter foods such as green leafy vegetables. It has been hypothesized that this predisposition evolved to attract children to energy-dense foods while discouraging the consumption of toxins. Although this may have enhanced survival in environments historically characterized by food scarcity, it is clearly maladaptive in many of today's food environments where children are surrounded by an abundance of sweet-

Cow's milk protein allergy. A multi-centre study: clinical and epidemiological aspects.

BACKGROUND: Due to the age when it becomes apparent and the treatment needed, cow's milk proteins (CMP) allergy requires an accurate diagnosis to avoid labelling infants falsely as allergic and subjecting them to unnecessary diets. The objective of this multi-centre study carried out at the Allergy Units of 14 Children's Hospitals was to discover the epidemiological, clinical and evolutionary characteristics of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). METHODS AND RESULTS: Infants suspected of CMPA who attended allergy clinics at the hospitals taking part during the study period were studied and a d

Breath hydrogen response to milk containing lactose in colicky and noncolicky infants.

In 122 healthy newborn infants, we studied the relationship between breath hydrogen (H2) production after feedings containing lactose (human milk or commercial formula) in colicky and noncolicky infants at 6 weeks and 3 months. Eighty-three infants (68%) developed colic (mild, moderate, or severe) by 2.6 +/- 1.8 weeks of age (mean +/- SD). Zero time (baseline) breath H2 values were significantly higher in colicky compared with noncolicky infants at both 6 weeks (40.6 +/- 41.4 vs 14.8 +/- 32.9 ppm) and 3 months (27.7 +/- 38.1 vs 8.5 +/- 18.2 ppm). There were significantly more positive breath H
