RNA secondary structure prediction by using discrete mathematics: an interdisciplinary research experience for undergraduate students.

The focus of this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project was on RNA secondary structure prediction by using a lattice walk approach. The lattice walk approach is a combinatorial and computational biology method used to enumerate possible secondary structures and predict RNA secondary structure from RNA sequences. The method uses discrete mathematical techniques and identifies specified base pairs as parameters. The goal of the REU was to introduce upper-level undergraduate students to the principles and challenges of interdisciplinary research in molecular biology and discrete ma

[Physical activity and mental health in childhood and adolescence: a summary of the evidence from three national studies].

Young people are increasingly burdened by global crises. Physical activity (PA) is considered a key factor for mental health; however, for Germany, an integrated synthesis of population-based evidence is still lacking. The aim of this narrative overview is therefore to consolidate current findings on the association between PA and mental health. The analysis draws on three population-based studies conducted as module or follow-up studies in cooperation with the KiGGS study: the MoMo study (motor performance/physical activity), the BELLA and COPSY studies (mental health), and the COMO study (int

Palliative care in fragility hip fracture: An empirical narrative review of an underrecognised need.

BACKGROUND: Fragility hip fractures are associated with high morbidity, mortality, and complex care needs that extend beyond acute management. Despite this, palliative care remains underutilised in this population. Consequently, palliative care needs in people with fragility hip fractures remain insufficiently recognised, assessed and integrated into care pathways. OBJECTIVE: To identify, synthesise, and analyse key concepts emerging from the literature on palliative care in fragility hip fractures, with a focus on their interrelationships and implications for care. METHODS: An empirical nar

Occupational Noise Exposure in Metallurgical Research Laboratories: A Review Based on Industrial Evidence with Implications for Research Settings.

Occupational noise is a well-recognized hazard in industrial workplaces, yet its implications for metallurgical research laboratories have received comparatively limited attention despite the widespread use of high-noise equipment. Although systematic personal dosimetry studies of laboratory researchers are currently unavailable, evidence from industrial and equipment-engineering studies indicates that common metallurgical processes, including ball milling, mechanical alloying, grinding, polishing, powder processing, and high-temperature operations, can generate sound pressure levels approachi

How has Acceptability Been Defined and Measured in Cancer Screening Research? A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer screening is crucial for early detection and improved outcomes globally. Screening must be "acceptable" to health professionals and the public. However, acceptability definitions and measures have not always been made explicit. This scoping review aimed to explore the definitions, theories, and methods used by researchers investigating acceptability. METHODS: We conducted a term-based scoping review of published literature in six databases. Two independent reviewers screened citations for inclusion. Study characteristics (publication year, country, study design, sample size

The Impact of Insomnia on the Clinical Course and Treatment Outcomes of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is markedly more prevalent in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients than in the general population and is closely linked to pain, fatigue, psychological comorbidities, and systemic inflammation. Evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship, where active disease worsens sleep quality, while poor sleep amplifies inflammatory activity and symptom severity. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase to identify studies from the last 15 years involving adult RA patients. Inclusion criteria required assessment of insomnia or sleep

Fibromyalgia: one year in review 2025.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterised by widespread pain, high prevalence, and a significant impact on quality of life. Despite extensive research, its pathogenesis and treatment remain only partially understood, driving continued investigation throughout 2024. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system has been linked to chronic stress responses and neuroinflammation, with neuroimaging and preclinical studies confirming altered pain and stress processing. Low-grade inflammation and metabolic disturbances, including cytokine im

Immune-Mediated Disorders in Patients With Alopecia Areata: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a nonscarring, organ-specific autoimmune disorder characterized by hair loss. Emerging evidence suggests that AA frequently coexists with other immune-mediated diseases, but the strength and consistency of these associations remain unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to systematically evaluate the prevalence and risk of immune-mediated comorbidities in patients with AA, focusing on dermatological, endocrinological, gastrointestinal, and systemic immune-mediated conditions. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Medline, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for s

Rare sex chromosome variation 48,XXYY: An integrative review.

While the most common Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy (SCA) is 47,XXY, other variations, such as 48,XXYY, are less studied, perhaps due to its rarity. 48,XXYY occurs with an estimated prevalence of 1:18,000-40,000 male births. This SCA is associated with a variety of complex physical, psychological, and neuroanatomical findings. The purpose of this integrative review is to summarize the available evidence related to 48,XXYY and identify gaps in the literature. This study utilized integrative review and PRISMA-guided methodology to search six databases for information pertaining to 48,XXYY. There wer

Neurogenetics of developmental dyslexia: from genes to behavior through brain neuroimaging and cognitive and sensorial mechanisms.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a complex neurodevelopmental deficit characterized by impaired reading acquisition, in spite of adequate neurological and sensorial conditions, educational opportunities and normal intelligence. Despite the successful characterization of DD-susceptibility genes, we are far from understanding the molecular etiological pathways underlying the development of reading (dis)ability. By focusing mainly on clinical phenotypes, the molecular genetics approach has yielded mixed results. More optimally reduced measures of functioning, that is, intermediate phenotypes (IPs),

THE CASE FOR AN ETHICS RESEARCH CONSORTIUM FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES: PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF STEM CELL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT.

Emerging technologies have gained notoriety as a catalyst of socioeconomic progress, but have also inspired a revolution in ethics. Here, we provide an overview of ethics in stem cell-based therapies and offer a compelling argument for a need to establish an Ethics Research Consortium that will be tasked to assemble an interdisciplinary panel of experts who will apply ethical principles to analyze the social merit relative to the economic incentives of this emerging technology. Milestone studies on cell therapy in Parkinson's disease and stroke over the last two decades were the focus of this
