Mentalization-Based Group Therapy for Personality Disorder in Adolescence: A Single Case Study.

Treating personality disorders in adolescents presents a significant challenge, as intense emotions and unstable relationships often lead to early dropout from therapy. This is particularly concerning, given that psychotherapy is the primary treatment for personality disorders and that such a diagnosis is typically associated with severe difficulties daily functioning. The case report of a 16-year-old girl with borderline personality disorder illustrates how a history of trauma and early unstable relationships can contribute to later difficulties in emotion regulation and impair the ability to

Benefits and burdens of daily sacrifices and commitment in same- and different-gender couples: Explorations of proximity and direction of effects.

Research and theory document links between sacrifices and commitment in couples, yet the direction of effects remains unclear. Whereas interdependence theorists suggest that sacrifices help couples to build commitment, other scholars have suggested that being committed leads partners to sacrifice for each other. Nearly all research in this area has focused on men and women in different-gender relationships with each other. We contribute to this literature by using dyadic daily diary data to examine associations between sacrifices and commitment as they unfold in a sample of same- (n = 85 coupl

Conversational linguistic features inform social-relational inference.

Whether it is the first day of school or a new job, individuals often find themselves in situations where they must learn the structure of existing social relationships. However, the mechanisms through which individuals evaluate the strength and nature of these existing relationships - social-relational inference - remain unclear. We posit that linguistic features of conversations may help individuals evaluate social relationships and may be associated with social-relational inference. Leveraging a naturalistic behavioral experiment (57 adults; 34,735 observations), participants watched a mid-

Extrinsic emotion regulation motives in dyads of friends.

Due to the central role friendships play in young adulthood, it is crucial to understand factors that help foster high-quality bonds. The present study examined associations between extrinsic emotion regulation motives and relationship quality in friendship dyads. A sample of 105 young adult dyads (N = 210; Mage = 19.5 years, SDage = 1.2 years) completed a survey assessing their motives for engaging in extrinsic emotion regulation with each other and the constructive and destructive behaviors in their friendship. Actor-partner interdependence models indicated motivation to help a friend regula

Friends on the Other Side: Receptiveness to Opposing Views Predicts Formation of Politically Heterogeneous Relationships.

Growing evidence points to the corrosive influence of partisanship on society. We examine the relationship between "receptiveness to opposing views" (i.e., an individual difference in the willingness to engage with information from opposing perspectives) and the propensity to form positive and close collaborative relationships with ideologically opposed others. Across three studies varying in sampling and methodological approaches-a retrospective network study, a time-lagged field study, and an experiment-we find that individual and mutual receptiveness mitigate the negative influence of ideol

The impact of emojis on perceived responsiveness and relationship satisfaction in text messaging.

Partner responsiveness is a key predictor of likability and overall relationship quality, yet its role in digital communication remains insufficiently studied. This study examined how the inclusion of emojis in text messages influences perceptions of responsiveness and, subsequently, likability, closeness, and relationship satisfaction. A sample of 260 participants viewed 15 text-based conversations in which they assumed that they received responses from their friends. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (e.g., text-only responses or responses that combined text and em

Adolescents' state authenticity and inauthenticity when socialising online with a friend: Motivations in friendship.

Authenticity is important for psychological thriving and adolescents experiment with who they are becoming (identities) with friends, so friendships are an important relationship where state authenticity and inauthenticity (the sense of and being the real me right now, versus not the real me) occur. Recent qualitative research noted friendship motivations may be connected to adolescents' state authenticity and inauthenticity experiences, so the current study quantitatively investigated whether motivations/regulations (intrinsic, identified, introjected, external, and amotivation) predict adole

Haunted attraction: The effects of recreational fear on interpersonal bonding.

Recreational fear experiences, such as haunted attractions, paradoxically attract millions of patrons annually; despite fear being a generally negative emotion, people will pay money to experience it. Some have stipulated that part of the appeal is interpersonal-anecdotally, such experiences appear to bring people closer together. We put this idea to the test in five studies conducted at three commercial haunted attractions. In Studies 1-4, feeling more fear and making physical contact with other attraction guests were strong predictors of perceiving that the experience brought participants cl

Exploring how high-level relations function in working memory: Unique mechanism of social grouping compared to nonsocial grouping.

Humans efficiently perceive high-level relations and use them to facilitate grouping. For instance, interactive agents can be grouped into coherent social units (social grouping), while nonsocial relations like physically compatible shapes or semantic relatedness form nonsocial grouping. In this study, we examined how grouping based on high-level relations functions in working memory (WM). While previous studies have demonstrated that both social and nonsocial relations enhance WM capacity for the relations themselves, these findings provide only a partial answer to how high-level relations fu

Staying or Leaving: The Dialectics of Reconstructing Couple Relationships Following Intimate Partner Violence.

The current discourse in the field of intimate partner violence is based mostly on the expectation that violence terminates the relationship and the partners separate to reconstruct their lives. This expectation is based on an either/or paradigm, which appears problematic given the reality of couples struggling with staying or leaving. This article examined the meanings couples attributed to remaining in their marital relationship following intimate partner violence and the efforts invested in rehabilitating the relationship. The study is based on 24 interviews with 12 couples who stayed toget

Interpersonal sensitivity as a central hub: a network analysis of childhood trauma and psychological symptoms in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma exhibits complex associations with adolescent mental health, however the interplay between specific trauma subtypes and psychological symptoms remains underexplored. This study employs network analysis to map symptom-trauma interactions, identify potential intervention targets, and explore gender differences in these interactions among adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: A total of 723 adolescents diagnosed with MDD were recruited from a psychiatric clinic in China. Psychological symptoms (SCL-90) and childhood trauma exposure (CTQ) were asse

Important Mechanisms in the Development of Anxiety in Children with ADHD: The Role of Associated Features of ADHD and Interpersonal Functioning.

Over a quarter of children with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) meet diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder as well. The goals of this paper are (a) to examine what is currently known about co-occurring ADHD and anxiety in children, (b) propose and outline underlying factors relevant to the development of anxiety in children with ADHD, and (c) discuss future directions and clinical implications for the prevention and identification of anxiety development in children with ADHD. It is proposed that certain associated features of ADHD (i.e., low effortful control and emotion

Gossiping the (recipient's) day away: The impact of supervisor-directed gossip on recipients' rumination, sleep quality, vitality, and work outcomes.

Despite gossip research's predominant focus on gossipers and gossip targets, existing theoretical views and the limited yet important empirical studies converge to suggest that gossip benefits its recipients. Our research builds on conservation of resources theory to shift this consensus by examining the negative effects of supervisor-directed gossip on recipients. We theorize that hearing negative supervisor-directed gossip triggers both cognition- and affect-focused rumination, which consume resources, and we develop a research question around the moderating role of hearing positive supervis

Social Media Friendship Jealousy.

A new measure to assess friendship jealousy in the context of social media was developed. This one-factor, seven-item measure was psychometrically sound, showing evidence of validity and reliability in three samples of North American adults (Study 1, n = 491; Study 2, n = 494; Study 3, n = 415) and one-, two-, and three-year stability (Study 3). Women reported more social media friendship jealousy than men (Studies 2 and 3) and younger women had the highest levels of social media friendship jealousy (compared with younger men and older men and women; Study 2). Social media friendship jealousy

Friendship changes differentially predict neural correlates of decision-making for friends across adolescence.

Adolescents' peer world is highly dynamic with constant dissolution of old friendships and formation of new ones. Though many of adolescents' risky decisions involve their peers, little is known about how adolescents' ever-changing friendships shape their ability to make these peer-involving risky decisions, particularly adaptive ones, and whether this association shifts over time. In a 5-wave longitudinal fMRI study, 173 adolescents (at wave 1: Mage = 12.8, SDage = 0.52; range = 11.9-14.5) made risky choices to win money for their best friend. We assessed whether participants nominated the sa

Roles of expressed gratitude and apologies in predicting reciprocal responsiveness.

Research has indicated the critical role of responsiveness in facilitating close relationships, but what communication leads to enhanced responsiveness has not been fully explored. We hypothesized that gratitude and apologies facilitate responsiveness within friendship relationships in Japan. In Experiment 1 (n = 669), receiving gratitude, apologies, or both gratitude and apologies increased recipients' perceptions of the expresser's responsiveness more than receiving a message without either gratitude or apologies. In Experiment 2 (n = 139), the participants who received gratitude as well as

Perceived overlap and therapy outcomes among couple clients.

This article explores couples' perceptions and expectations of closeness in a clinical setting, and how relationship perceptions and expectations are associated with treatment outcomes. Bowen's theory of differentiation suggests that healthy relationships require a balance of autonomy and connection. However, some research suggests that contemporary societal expectations are pushing couples to expect greater degrees of closeness and less autonomy. Utilizing a clinical sample of 185 couples from an on-campus Couple and Family Therapy training clinic, this article explores couples' perceptions a

Influence of Betrayal Trauma on Schizoid Personality Pathology.

Schizoid personality pathology is among the most debilitating and enigmatic forms of personality pathology. Some have suggested that a potential etiological influence on schizoid pathology is trauma. Thus far, research on the association between trauma and schizoid pathology has focused primarily on type of trauma (e.g., abuse vs. neglect during childhood) rather than who perpetrated the trauma. This contrasts with recent research on trauma perpetrated by someone upon whom the survivor relies and/or trusts (i.e. betrayal trauma), which many studies show has a uniquely pernicious association wi
