Reported sexual abuse and subsequent psychopathology among women attending psychology clinics: the mediating role of dissociation.

OBJECTIVE: While there is now a good clinical research base that outlines the links between reported sexual abuse and psychological symptoms and disorders, there is less of an understanding of the psychological processes mediating that relationship. This study assessed the role of dissociation as a mediator between reported sexual abuse and a range of psychopathological characteristics. DESIGN: A patient-series design was used. METHOD: Participants were an unselected sample of 45 women attending clinical psychology services. Each woman was interviewed regarding a reported history of sexual a

Irritable bowel syndrome: a test of the colonic hyperalgesia hypothesis.

This study tested the hypothesis that, patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), there is a primary hyperalgesia of the colon. Previous work, which examined these patients and normals, has not included subjects who provide a control for relevant psychological characteristics. We compared ratings of pain, following varying degrees of distension of the sigmoid colon, in normals, patients with IBS, and patients who were psychologically disturbed but without bowel symptoms. Psychological characteristics were assessed by a psychiatric interview and psychometric inventories; response to distensi

Chronic Stress and Stroke Among the Adult Population in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association of chronic psychological distress and stroke among a large sample of the adult population in the United States. METHODOLOGY: We utilized data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) spanning 10 years (2004-2013). Stroke history was self-reported, as were other stroke risk factors. Psychological distress was measured using the Six-Item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (a score of ≥13 indicated distress). We used a logistic regression model to examine the strength of the association between psychological distress and stroke. We

Caregiver Burden Mediates the Association Between Patient Self-Care Behaviors and Psychological Distress in Diabetic Foot Ulcer Care.

BACKGROUND: Home-based wound care is an important care model for patients with diabetic foot ulcers. In this setting, family caregivers often undertake daily supervision, wound observation, treatment coordination, and care-related decision-making. However, the relationship between patient self-care behaviors and caregiver psychological outcomes remains insufficiently understood. AIM: To examine the associations among patient self-care behaviors, caregiver burden, and caregiver psychological distress, and to explore whether caregiver burden mediated the relationship between patient self-care b

Patients were assessed within 4 weeks of onset of symptoms and then reviewed 2 and 4 weeks later. Physical illness data were collected at interview. Psychological and somatic symptom profiles were assessed by s

Laughing Alone and Punching Self: The Alignment of Laughter in Interviews With Men Convicted of Sexual Offences.

Laughter plays a significant role in narrative storytelling but the extent to which it appears (and is useful) during interviews with justice-involved populations is not well understood. The psychological value of "gallows" humor is well established in the buffering of work stress for first responders and emergency personnel, but criminologists are yet to fully explore the presence, or the benefit (if any) of laughter during field interviews. This paper analysed the occurrences of laughter in interviews with North American men incarcerated for sexual violence. We present a preliminary descript

A conceptual framework to assess health-related quality of life and treatment effectiveness in headache disorders from the patient perspective.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to elicit concepts that are important to patients with headache disorders (HD) to develop an HD-specific conceptual framework covering health-related quality of life (HRQL) and experiences of care. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative health services research approach was used to inform in-depth, semi-structured interviews with English-speaking adults with HD. Purposive, maximal variation sampling was used to ensure representation of a diverse sample that varied by age, gender, and HD diagnosis and treatments. A semi-structured interview guide was used that required participants to

Perceived need to prevent stroke readmission: A qualitative study from the perspective of stroke patients and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Stroke readmission poses a significant challenge for both stroke patients (SPs) and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing stroke readmission is crucial in empowering individuals to leverage supportive resources. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of HCPs and SPs regarding the modifiable factors influencing stroke readmission. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This qualitative study employed in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 30 participants selected through purposeful sampling from October 2023 to January 2024. An int

Flourishing alongside psychiatric symptoms: a qualitative study on dual-continuum mental health in university students.

BACKGROUND: University students' mental health is typically assessed through a deficit-oriented lens that equates symptom absence with well-being. Keyes' dual-continuum model challenges this assumption, yet qualitative evidence examining how students in active psychiatric treatment narrate the coexistence of distress and flourishing remains scarce, particularly outside high-income, English-speaking contexts. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive-interpretive study was conducted with seven undergraduate students (six women, one man; ages 19-23) receiving outpatient psychiatric care at a universit

Professional identity formation of family medicine residents in Singapore: a qualitative study to identify influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: Physician burnout and retention are critical challenges in Family Medicine (FM). Professional Identity Formation (PIF) in family physicians (FP) fosters resilience and job satisfaction but is often overlooked in residency training, particularly in predominantly hospital-based programs where residents are disconnected from the primary care community. AIM AND METHODS: This qualitative study explored FP PIF in a predominantly hospital-based FM residency program in Singapore and identified factors influencing its development. Individual in-depth semi-structured interviews were conduct

Psychological adjustment, HIV knowledge, and antiretroviral treatment adherence in newly diagnosed HIV patients: a cross-sectional study from an Albanian infectious diseases clinic.

BACKGROUND: The first year after an HIV diagnosis is a period of intense psychological vulnerability, with elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and adjustment problems documented in multiple settings. Depression and Psychological Distress in Patients with Lower Extremity Lymphedema: A Mixed-Method Study.

Background: Lower extremity lymphedema is a chronic and incurable condition. Treatment options for lymphedema have continued to advance and prognosis has improved; however, the condition still poses a substantial negative impact on patients' mental health. Therefore, the key questions raised in this study are "How many patients with lower limb lymph have depression symptoms?" and "Are there any differences in the symptoms and distress factors of patients with lower extremity lymphedema, and how do they experience distress?" Methods and Results: A total of 112 lower extremity lymphedema patient
