OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficiency and safety of capsule endoscopy for patients with intestinal diseases.
METHODS: Given M2A capsule endoscopy (CE) was performed on 81 patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and obscure abdominal pain, and the clinical data were analyzed.
RESULTS: In the 81 patients, 9 showed negative finding, CE didn't reach the small intestine in 1 patient. In the other 71 patients, 132 intestinal lesions were detected, and the total positive rate of CE for intestinal diseases was 88.75%. The authors present a case of prenatal diagnosis of cloacal anomaly, characterized by the presence of oligohydramnios and cystic pelvic mass with changing features during observation. For many years surgeons have preached against the removal of the appendix when regional enteritis is present. A high rate of fistulization and abscess formation supposedly follows appendectomy in such circumstances. We report the case of a patient with voluminous unilateral hypertrophy of vulvar labia and pseudocondylomata in the fossa navicularis associated with intestinal Crohn's disease. No fistulas were observed. The patient has had Crohn's disease for 8 years. Interrelationship of genital alterations and Crohn's disease are discussed.

The authors analyse a series of 138 cases of complicated diverticular sigmoiditis treated surgically. An enteroatmospheric fistula (EAF) is a disastrous complication of abdominal surgery. Most EAFs occur in open abdomens after damage-control procedures in trauma and emergency general surgery.
