INTRODUCTION: Pancreatitis is a dire clinical diagnosis with variable presentation in the paediatric population. Moreover, neonatal pancreatitis has been rarely reported in the English literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A newborn, product of a poorly supervised, pre-term gestation with pre-natally diagnosed intestinal obstruction, and post-natal clinical features of jaundice, vomiting, abdominal distension, aphonation and suspected chromosomal abnormalities. There was maternal hepatitis which was untreated. Diagnosed as duodenal atresia, the baby was investigated, resuscitated and had surgery.

AIM: To justify the concept of systemic membrane-destabilizing distress syndrome in surgery via analysis of phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes of various organs in urgent surgical abdominal diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Experimental research on dogs (n=90) included modeling of peritonitis, pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, obstructive jaundice, and post-hemorrhagic anemia. Clinical and laboratory studies were performed in patients (n=119) with acute peritonitis, severe pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, post-hemorrhagic anemia, acute cholecystitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, beni

We report the case of an 88-year-old female with obstructive jaundice due to a periampullary tumor. The patient developed acute cholangitis and consequent clinical deterioration, so it was decided to perform palliative biliary drainage. Due to duodenal tumor invasion, it was not possible to perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. A different approach was attempted and it was decided to carry out an endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy. This procedure was performed with a linear echoendoscope, and using a duodenal bulbar approach, a fistula was created between the

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have provided significant clinical benefits to many patients with advanced cancer; however, severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs) have occurred. Detecting and treating irAEs early could improve patient prognoses. Therefore, clinicians and patients should understand that these irAEs exist, especially those that are rare and serious. Case Presentation: In this report, an 86-year-old male patient, diagnosed with metastatic gastric cancer involving the peritoneum and retroperitoneal lymph nodes was treated with 5-cycle pembrolizumab therapy (100 mg q

Percutaneous transhepatic biliary decompression is a preoperative surgical adjunct in patients with obstructive jaundice that has been in use since 1973. It is recommended that this procedure be adopted for both palliative treatment in unresectable patients and as a preoperative means of lowering serum bilirubin in patients with potentially resectable malignancies of the pancreas or biliary tract. Metastatic tumor seeding along the transhepatic biliary catheter is an unusual complication resulting from this procedure but there have been a few cases reported in the literature. Below is a report

Jaundice in patients with AIDS can be a result of diverse conditions ranging from opportunistic infections to drug-related hepatotoxicity. With the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the prevalence of AIDS cholangiopathy as a cause of jaundice has decreased; on the other hand, ART-related hepatotoxicity has become one of the commonest causes of jaundice in these patients. AIDS cholangiopathy is a rare condition of extrahepatic biliary obstruction in patients with advanced HIV infection, usually due to opportunistic infections. Vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS) is an acquired disorder ch

Transhepatic percutaneous cholangiography continues to be a significant tool in the diagnosis of jaundice. It allows direct, easily achieved graphic delineation of the biliary system. Although specific diagnosis may not be possible, the site and extent of obstruction and the differentiation from intrahepatic parenchymal disease may be determined with a high degree of success.

A 60-year-old man with unresectable colon cancer required treatment for hydronephrosis, acute cholecystitis, and obstructive jaundice before chemotherapy. His performance status (PS) gradually deteriorated to PS 4. Cetuximab monotherapy was initiated instead of intensive chemotherapy. His general condition improved and mFOLFOX7 therapy was then continued in addition to cetuximab. A computed tomography (CT) scan after 6 months of chemotherapy revealed a partial response (PR). Cetuximab monotherapy may contribute to the treatment of patients with a poor PS.

Schwannoma is a myelin sheath tumor that can occur almost anywhere in the body. The most common locations are the central nervous system, extremities, neck, mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Benign schwannomas in the porta hepatis are extremely rare and radiologically are diagnosed as either enlarged lymph nodes or bowel masses, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors. In this location they usually produce symptoms by compressing adjacent structures and often present with obstructive jaundice. The preoperative diagnosis can be extremely difficult.

A patient undergoing repeated endoscopic injection therapy for important bleeding from a duodenal ulcer developed intestinal perforation followed by extrahepatic obstructive jaundice resulting from benign biliary stricture. It is proposed that these complications were a consequence of the use of ethanolamine oleate as part of the injection regimen and caution against the use of this material is needed, particularly as current clinical trials suggest that sclerosants offer no advantage over injection therapy with dilute adrenaline alone.

Treatment efficacy was compared for transcutaneous transhepatic microcholecystostomy controlled by laparoscopy (75 patients) against that controlled by ultrasound scanning (67 patients) principally in acute cholecystitis. Basic indications for microcholecystostomy are a high operative risk in elderly patients and decompression of the bile ducts for obstructive jaundice. Four patients (2.8%) developed postmicrocholecystostomy complications treated by urgent surgery. The manipulation is short-term, simple and is well tolerated even in grave condition. This makes microcholecystostomy an alternati

A 7 week old baby presented with generalized lymphadenopathy, obstructive jaundice and massive hepatosplenomegaly. The clinical picture closely resembled a case of disseminated malignancy. Soon after the diagnosis of tuberculosis was made by pathological examination of a lymph node, the patient died. An autopsy revealed primary tuberculous foci in the liver and massive lymphadenopathy at the porta hepatis consistent with transplacentally acquired tuberculosis. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this rare condition is emphasized.

Acute pancreatitis associated with pancreatic carcinoma or tumour metastases in the pancreas is well documented. In this paper we show a similar association between acute pancreatitis and ampullary carcinoma. Of 41 patients with ampullary carcinoma seen at a single centre over a 25 year period (1959-83), 6 developed acute pancreatitis. Three other patients with a history of obstructive jaundice were noted to show mild transient hyperamylasaemia. Endoscopic retrograde choledochopancreatography is mandatory in the investigation of such patients.

Liver involvement is nearly universal in healthy persons with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection-induced infectious mononucleosis. It is usually mild, undetected clinically and resolves spontaneously. Jaundice is distinctly uncommon and may reflect either more severe hepatitis or an associated hemolytic anemia. Cholestatic hepatitis due to EBV infection is infrequently reported and may pose a diagnostic quandary. We describe a patient who presented with jaundice and a markedly elevated serum alkaline phosphatase level due to serologically confirmed acute infection with EBV. Imaging studies exc

AIM: To determine the optimal method of endoscopic preoperative biliary drainage for malignant distal biliary obstruction.
METHODS: Multicenter retrospective study was conducted in patients who underwent plastic stent (PS) or nasobiliary catheter (NBC) placement for resectable malignant distal biliary obstruction followed by surgery between January 2010 and March 2012. Procedure-related adverse events, stent/catheter dysfunction (occlusion or migration of PS/NBC, development of cholangitis, or other conditions that required repeat endoscopic biliary intervention), and jaundice resolution (bil

Normal and Eck fistula dogs react in a similar manner to the intravenous injection of hemoglobin obtained from laked red cells of the same animal. Hemoglobin appears in the urine after a few minutes and bile pigments in one to one and one half hours. In this simple type of hematogenous jaundice the reaction is in no way influenced by shutting out the portal blood from the liver and cutting down its blood supply to about 25 per cent. of normal. In a second type of hematogenous jaundice produced by chloroform anesthesia, which produces central liver necrosis, there is no essential difference bet
