Comparison of IOP obtained in different kind of eyes with contact and no contact tonometers.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) values measured in three different kinds of participants such as healthy subjects (HS), keratoconus patients (KP), and those who underwent myopic photorefractive keratectomy (MPRK). The devices used in this study are the Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT), the dynamic contour tonometry (DCT), the ocular response analyzer (ORA), and the Corvis ST (CST). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This research included 92 eyes of 92 h, 63 eyes of 63 KP, and 58 eyes of 58 MPRKM. Each participant underwent a complete ophthalm

Bowman Layer Onlay Transplantation to Manage Herpes Corneal Scar.

PURPOSE: To introduce the concept of using a Bowman layer (BL) onlay graft to manage superficial herpetic corneal scarring and to describe the clinical outcomes of the first 2 cases undergoing this procedure. METHODS: Two patients with a quiescent superficial corneal scar after herpes (varicella zoster virus [n = 1] and herpes simplex virus [n = 1]) keratitis underwent BL onlay transplantation. After the removal of the host epithelium and limited superficial keratectomy, an isolated BL graft was placed onto the host corneal surface. The cornea was then covered with an amniotic membrane and a

Corneal collagen crosslinking for corneal ectasias: a review.

PURPOSE: To review the published literature on corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL). METHODS: Importance has been placed on seminal publications, systemic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled clinical trials. Where such evidence was not available, cohort studies, case-controlled studies, and case series with follow-up greater than 12 months were examined. RESULTS: Corneal collagen crosslinking with riboflavin and ultraviolet A (UVA) 370 nm radiation appears to be capable of arresting the progression of ectatic corneal disorders, with most studies reporting significant improvement

Corneal sequestrum in a dog with chronic unilateral keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 14-year-old 8.2-kg (18.04-lb) castrated male Cairn Terrier with chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the left eye was evaluated because of severe blepharospasm and a black plaque of 3 weeks' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Abnormalities of the left eye included a decreased Schirmer tear test value and the presence of a brownish-black plaque in the center of the cornea. The plaque was surrounded by fibrovascular tissue except at the medial aspect where there was mild malacia of the adjacent corneal stroma. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The plaque was removed by superficial keratect

LASIK for the correction of residual refractive errors from previous surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) efficacy in correcting residual refractive errors after corneal or intraocular surgery (penetrating keratoplasty, radial keratotomy, photorefractive keratectomy, phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, penetrating ocular trauma and phakic IOL implantation). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed LASIK in 87 eyes of 62 patients previously operated by means of other surgical techniques to completely correct the residual refractive error. We report the mean refractive error (in terms of spherica

Reassembly of the anchoring structures of the corneal epithelium during wound repair in the rabbit.

Reappearance of the structures involved in adhesion of the corneal epithelium to the stroma was studied in healing 7 mm keratectomy wounds in rabbit corneas. Corneas were taken at 48 and 66 hr, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks, and 4, 6 and 12 months post-wounding. Immunolocalization of bullous pemphigoid antigen (BPA), laminin and type VII collagen was used to determine time and sequence of appearance of hemidesmosomes, basement membrane and anchoring fibrils, respectively. Electron micrographs from three regions in the wound were used to correlate the immunohistochemical data and to quantitate the
