Lactobacillus salivarius SNK-6 Activates Intestinal Mucosal Immune System by Regulating Cecal Microbial Community Structure in Laying Hens.

The production performance and disease resistance of laying hens decrease obviously with age. This study aimed to investigate the effects of supplementary Lactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) SNK-6 on laying performance, the immune-related gene expression in cecal tonsil, and the cecal microbial composition of laying hens. Here, 384 Xinyang black commercial hens (55 weeks old) were randomly allocated to three groups under the same husbandry and dietary regimes: basal diet (Con), the low L. salivarius SNK-6 group (T1: 1.0 × 106 CFU/g), and the high L. salivarius SNK-6 group (T2: 1.0 × 107 C…

Characterization and Transferability of erm and tet Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Lactobacillus spp. Isolated from Traditional Fermented Milk.

Lactobacillus is a widely used bacteria and consumed through various fermented foods and beverages. Strains have been shown to carry resistance genes and mobile genetic elements with their ability to transfer the resistance to sensitive pathogenic strains. To study this, 4 cultures of Lactobacillus were isolated from traditional fermented milk. The isolates were able to grow up to 4% (w/v) NaCl concentration and 45 °C temperature, and showed > 97% 16S rRNA gene similarities with Lactobacillus fermentum. All the isolates were phenotypically screened for the presence of antibiotic resistance. Mi…

The ameliorative effect of Lactobacillus paracasei BEJ01 against FB1 induced spermatogenesis disturbance, testicular oxidative stress and histopathological damage.

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a possible carcinogenic molecule for humans as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2B group. In livestock, it is responsible for several mycotoxicoses and economic losses. Lactobacillus strains, inhabitants of a wide range of foodstuffs and the gastrointestinal tract, are generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the protective effect of Lactobacillus paracasei (LP) against FB1-induced reprotoxicities including testicular histopathology, sperm quality disturbance, and testosterone level reduction.Pu…

Bifidobacterium animalis KV9 and Lactobacillus vaginalis FN3 alleviated β-lactoglobulin-induced allergy by modulating dendritic cells in mice.

Food allergy is a serious public health problem because of its high incidence and risk. Probiotics can induce immune regulation in patients with allergic diseases, but its mechanism is not fully clear. In this paper, β-lactoglobulin (β-LG)-sensitized mice were used as models to explore the mechanism of Bifidobacterium animalis KV9 (KV9) and Lactobacillus vaginalis FN3 (FN3) on reducing allergic reactions and regulating immune cell function. The results showed that oral administration of KV9 and FN3 significantly reduced the scores of allergic symptoms, hypothermia symptoms, and serum levels of…

Interstrain Variability of Human Vaginal Lactobacillus crispatus for Metabolism of Biogenic Amines and Antimicrobial Activity against Urogenital Pathogens.

Lactobacillus crispatus is the dominant species in the vagina of many women. With the potential for strains of this species to be used as a probiotic to help prevent and treat dysbiosis, we investigated isolates from vaginal swabs with Lactobacillus-dominated and a dysbiotic microbiota. A comparative genome analysis led to the identification of metabolic pathways for synthesis and degradation of three major biogenic amines in most strains. However, targeted metabolomic analysis of the production and degradation of biogenic amines showed that certain strains have either the ability to produce o…

The Vaginal Microbiome of Nonhuman Primates Can Be Only Transiently Altered to Become Lactobacillus Dominant without Reducing Inflammation.

The vaginal microbiome composition in humans is categorized based upon the degree to which one of four species of Lactobacillus is dominant (Lactobacillus crispatus, community state type I [CST I], Lactobacillus gasseri, CST II, Lactobacillus iners, CST III, and Lactobacillus jensenii, CST V). Women with a vaginal microbiome not dominated by one of the four Lactobacillus species tend to have a more diverse microbiome, CST IV. CSTs I, II, III, and V are common in North America and Europe and are associated with lower incidences of some pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), huma…

The Exopolysaccharide Produced by Lactobacillus paracasei IJH-SONE68 Prevents and Ameliorates Inflammatory Responses in DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. IBD includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). CD can occur in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, whereas UC mainly occurs in the colon and rectum. We previously demonstrated that a novel exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by a plant-derived bacterium, Lactobacillus paracasei IJH-SONE68, prevents and improves the inflammation in contact dermatitis model mice via oral administration. To evaluate the preventive effect of the EPS against other inflammat…

Lactobacillus reuteri Enhances the Mucosal Barrier Function against Heat-killed Salmonella Typhimurium in the Intestine of Broiler Chicks.

Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) infection in chickens inhibits their growth and can lead to food-borne diseases in humans. Probiotics are expected to enhance the function of host intestinal barrier against pathogen infection. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of viable Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) on the response of the mucosal barrier function to antigen stimulation in broiler chicks. Day-old male (n=8) and female (n=4) broiler chicks were orally administered either 1 × 108 LR or a water-only control, every day for 7 days. After 7 days, either 1 × 108 heat-killed ST (k-ST), or a buff…

Lipoteichoic acid depletion in Lactobacillus impacts cell morphology and stress response but does not abolish mercury surface binding.

Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is a key component of the cell wall of most Gram-positive bacteria and plays many structural and functional roles. In probiotic lactobacilli, the function of LTA in mediating bacteria/host cross-talk has been evidenced and it has been postulated that, owing to its anionic nature, LTA may play a role in toxic metal sequestration by these bacteria. However, studies on this last aspect employing strains unable to synthesise LTA are lacking. We have inactivated the LTA polymerase encoding gene ltaS in two different Lactobacillus plantarum strains. Analysis of LTA contents i…
