Endoscopic therapy by CO2-laser of the "Skalpel-1" type through the Friedel breathing bronchoscope is analyzed. The treatment was performed in 40 patients with various endobronchial affections such as tumors, fistulas due to tuberculosis of the intrathoracic lymph nodes, specific and nonspecific stump inflammation, mycotic lesions of the stump mucosa, foreign bodies, cicatricial stenosis of the bronchi, scleroma of the trachea and bronchi, hemorrhage. High efficiency of endoscopic laser bronchoscopy was shown.

Radiation therapy for malignant gynecologic disease and prostatic cancer has resulted in increased survival and cure rates. This modality has unfortunately produced debilitating radiation proctitis. Recently, five patients were seen with continuous rectal bleeding secondary to radiation disease of the rectum. Laser-assisted angioplasty is rapidly evolving into a promising adjunct to or replacement for standard vascular procedures. A protocol was devised to evaluate the technique in a non-selected, consecutive patient population to define the applications and limitations of the technique. In a 12-month period, 358 lower-limb atherosclerotic lesions were treated with laser/balloon angioplasty [percutaneously (52%) or open (48%)] in 206 consecutive patients. The paper presents data of clinical and laboratory investigations performed in patients with vulvar leukoplakia or kraurosis before and after the helium-neon laser therapy. The impairment of adrenal performance (related to glucocorticoid, androgenic or mineralocorticoid functions) has been identified in the examinees. Employment of the laser therapy has normalized the impaired functions and beneficially affected local dystrophic processes in vulvar tissues. Local application of aerosol corticoid agents prolongs the response to the therapy.

Modern techniques have reduced the long existing reluctance to perform lingual tonsillectomy. The results of treatment of hyperplasia of the lingual tonsil with the carbon dioxide laser in 32 patients are presented. After exposure with a special endoscope the lingual tonsil can be vaporized or excised under microscopic control with promising results, far superior to the results obtained with other surgical techniques. Since the success rate of the surgery depends on the diagnostic criteria for applying this therapy, a careful selection of patients is essential.

Fifty cases of glottic carcinomas treated with CO2 laser were reviewed. The recurrence rate was fairly high (19/50), especially in T1b and T2 cases. The recurrences were successfully treated in all but 1 case who refused treatment. The 3-year crude survival rate was 92% and the 3-year determinate survival rate was 98%. The ultimate voice conservation rate was 100% for T1a, 76% for T1b and 71% for T2 cases. The results led us to the following conclusion: (1) glottic T1a carcinomas can be eradicated with laser excision biopsy preserving good vocal function; (2) for glottic T1b and selected cases

Sixty-one patients (82 eyes) were studied after argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) to determine the lasting efficacy of such treatment. This investigation, now in its fourth year, was prospective, and the information derived was analysed with the aid of a computer. A group of two hundred and sixty women, most of them young, with histologic diagnosis of CIN located at the exocervix, has been treated by means of CO2 laser vaporization. The entire transformation zone and a minimum of 10 mm at the base of cervical canal was vaporized to a depth of 6-7 mm. Over a thirty-month period, a wide variety of common urethral problems were treated on an ambulatory basis, with the neodymium:yttrium-aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. Many methods have been used over the years to correct choanal atresia, a cause of neonatal respiratory distress. The precise, relatively bloodless incisions of the carbon dioxide laser have made it an effective tool for laser surgery using a transnasal approach. In spite of its utility, certain conditions impede laser surgery. These conditions include septal deviation, enlarged inferior turbinates, high arched hard palate, and other craniofacial disorders.
