An increased incidence of cancer occurs in renal homograft recipients. Malignancies may be inadvertently transplanted with the kidney from donors with cancer, or may arise de novo at some time after transplantation. The latter tumors occur on an average of thirty-four months after the operation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients with basal-cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin have an increased risk of developing other cancers. A total of 71,924 patients diagnosed with BCC between 1953 and 1995 were identified from the Finnish Cancer Registry. They were followed up for subsequent primary cancers from the date of the first BCC diagnosis to the end of 1995. From the files of the Department of Pathology at Kinshasa University Hospital, D.R. Congo, we have studied the histological and epidemiological profile of oral cancer in Congo. The relative frequency of oral cancer in Congo is 2.1%. The palate is the most common site (28.8%) and the squamous cell carcinoma the most frequent histological type (57.6%). People between 50 and 59 years old (27%) (Means: 48.39 +/- 15.43 years) and females (M/F = 0.47/1 are more affected).

In this study slightly more than two out of every 100 biopsy specimens from the set population of 10,414 specimens showed malignant oral lesions. The most common sites for oral malignancy were the floor of the mouth and the alveolar ridge, respectively. Lesions were most common during the fifth decade of life, followed by the sixth. Reconstructive procedures in the head and neck region use a wide range of flaps for defect closure. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review and describe techniques for the reconstruction of large, complex perioral defects after resection of oral squamous cell carcinoma with emphasis on cosmetic and functional outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A review of techniques and selected case presentations using different flap designs for the reconstruction of large perioral defects following resection of squamous cell carcinoma was performed. The Bernard and Karapandzic flaps were used for large lower lip defects. A Zisser flap technique was used to reconstruct a large commissure defect.

Severe limitation in the oral opening, though an uncommon clinical presentation, makes gaining access to the oral cavity difficult for any dental procedure. This article describes the maxillofacial prosthetic management of a patient with a midfacial defect complicated by postsurgical microstomia. Intraoral and extraoral prostheses restored the patient's speech, dental articulation, mastication, lip support, esthetics, and anterior oral seal.
