Morphometric abnormalities in spleen and kidney of the progeny of mice fed American cranberry extract (Vaccinium macrocarpon) during pregnancy and lactation.

UNLABELLED: Cranberries and cranberry-derived diet supplements are often recommended for the treatment of urinary tract infections, also during pregnancy. These products contain strongly anti-angiogenic chemical compounds which could not be indifferent to the developing fetus. In the present work we evaluated the effect of feeding pregnant and lactating mice American cranberry extract (daily dose 0.88 mg) on the morphology and some parameters of spleen and kidney function of their adult progeny. Six weeks after delivery the morphometry of spleen and kidney, cytometric analysis of spleen lympho

The immune system and hypertension.

A powerful interaction between the autonomic and the immune systems plays a prominent role in the initiation and maintenance of hypertension and significantly contributes to cardiovascular pathology, end-organ damage and mortality. Studies have shown consistent association between hypertension, proinflammatory cytokines and the cells of the innate and adaptive immune systems. The sympathetic nervous system, a major determinant of hypertension, innervates the bone marrow, spleen and peripheral lymphatic system and is proinflammatory, whereas the parasympathetic nerve activity dampens the inflam

Involvement of central airways in vibroacoustic disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: Vibroacoustic disease (VAD) is the whole-body pathology caused by excessive exposure to LFN. For the past 25 years, it has been know that low frequency noise (LFN, < 500 Hz, including infrasound) targets the respiratory system. In LFN-exposed rodents, the morphological changes of respiratory tract tissue partially explained some respiratory symptoms reported by VAD patients. However, many questions remain unanswered. Recently, some volunteer VAD patients underwent bronchoscopy in order to ascertain possible damage that could be associated with their respiratory complaints. METHO

Xeroderma pigmentosum in Libya.

BACKGROUND: A preliminary study of 24 cases of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) was presented in 1990 and later published in 1992. Since then we have seen 18 further cases. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical profile of Libyan cases of XP. METHODS: With the help of a special protocol, all 42 cases (23 girls and 19 boys from 29 families) treated and followed between 1981 and 1994 were subjected to detailed analysis. RESULTS: A history of consanguinity was present in the parents of 39 patients. XP in Libya is characterized by a relatively high incidence (approximately 15-20 per million of the populati

The CT appearance of pleural and extrapleural disease in lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: Pleural effusions in patients with lymphoma that are assumed to be related to malignancy are attributed to either lymphatic obstruction by tumour with resultant decreased clearance of pleural fluid, or direct tumour involvement of the pleura. The purpose of our study was to determine how often pleural or extrapleural disease was detected by computed tomography (CT) of patients with pleural effusions and primary or recurrent lymphoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We reviewed CT examinations showing evidence of pleural effusion in 61 patients with a diagnosis of primary or recurrent lympho

Lymphadenitis and lymphoproliferative lesions associated with the human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6).

A newly described herpes virus, human herpes virus 6, (HHV-6), has been linked to exanthema subitum but beyond this its pathogenetic impact remains to be determined. A large body of evidence links it to various lymphoproliferative disorders and this study was conducted to identify forms of lymphoproliferation linked to HHV-6. We studied biopsy samples from 32 patients with disorders of the lymphatic system for the presence of HHV-6, both by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in-situ hybridization (ISH) methods, as well as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viral DNA, clonal rearrangements of the antige

Congenital Chylous Ascites in a Neonate with Isolated Aqueductal Stenosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background and Clinical Significance: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting remains the standard definitive treatment for progressive neonatal obstructive hydrocephalus. Congenital chylous ascites is an uncommon neonatal condition, most often related to developmental lymphatic abnormalities. The concurrence of hydrocephalus requiring VP diversion with congenital chylous ascites is exceptionally rare and may first become apparent during abdominal access for shunt placement. Awareness of this possibility is clinically important because milky peritoneal fluid at shunt surgery can mimic gastrointesti…

Persistent elevation of procalcitonin following resolution of presumed community-acquired pneumonia revealing sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma.

Procalcitonin (PCT) is widely utilized as a biomarker of bacterial infection and sepsis and is expected to decline following successful treatment. Persistent elevation in the absence of ongoing infection should prompt consideration of alternative diagnoses. Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a rare neuroendocrine malignancy arising from parafollicular C-cells, is increasingly recognized as a non-infectious cause of elevated PCT. A 67-year-old woman presented with palpitations, exertional dyspnea, and dizziness. Initial investigations demonstrated a markedly elevated PCT level of 11.7 ng/mL and

Myelinated Glial Cells: Their Proposed Role in Waste Clearance and Neurodegeneration in Arachnid and Human Brain.

One of the most important goals in biomedical sciences is understanding the causal mechanisms of neurodegeneration. A prevalent hypothesis relates to impaired waste clearance mechanisms from the brain due to reported waste aggregation in the brains of Alzheimer patients, including amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tau tangles. Currently, our understanding of the mechanisms by which waste is removed from the brain is only fragmentary. Here we provide compelling evidence that waste clearance from brain tissue is highly conserved in arachnids and humans. Utilizing RNAscope in situ hybridizati

Acute plastic bronchitis after Ross procedure treated with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

PURPOSE: Plastic bronchitis is a rare condition characterized by the formation of airway casts occluding the lower respiratory tract. It is described more commonly in children, especially following correction of congenital heart disease. It involves lymphatic abnormalities leading to endobronchial lymph precipitating airway cast formation. When it presents acutely, it can lead to acute airway obstruction, which can be life-threatening. Plastic bronchitis has been rarely described in adults and is potentially underdiagnosed. The purpose of this case report is to emphasize, for the adult anesthe…

Noonan syndrome: clinical aspects and molecular pathogenesis.

Noonan syndrome (NS) is a relatively common, clinically variable and genetically heterogeneous developmental disorder characterized by postnatally reduced growth, distinctive facial dysmorphism, cardiac defects and variable cognitive deficits. Other associated features include ectodermal and skeletal defects, cryptorchidism, lymphatic dysplasias, bleeding tendency, and, rarely, predisposition to hematologic malignancies during childhood. NS is caused by mutations in the PTPN11, SOS1, KRAS, RAF1, BRAF and MEK1 (MAP2K1) genes, accounting for approximately 70% of affected individuals. SHP2 (encod

Screening for genetic aberrations in papillary thyroid cancer by using comparative genomic hybridization.

BACKGROUND: Determination of the genetic composition of papillary thyroid cancers may help explain differences in observed clinical behavior. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a novel molecular cytogenetic assay that allows simultaneous detection of gains, losses, and amplification of genetic information, making it an ideal screening tool. The aim of this study was to identify genetic aberrations occurring in papillary thyroid cancers by using CGH analysis. METHODS: CGH analysis was performed on 21 individual cases of papillary thyroid cancers. Nonparametric statistical comparisons w

Molecular and immune profiling of colorectal polyps using FTIR microspectroscopy.

Colorectal polyps (CRP) are abnormal protuberances of tissue that grow into the lumen from the typically flat colonic mucosa; according to their morphology, they are classified as sessile or pedunculated, and considering their behaviour, they can be classified as benign or malignant. Some CRP can be precursors to colorectal cancer. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze, using micro-FTIR, the biomolecular components and immune responses in mice with CRP. Fifteen mice of the C57BL/6 strain were randomly divided into two groups: healthy and CRP groups. The murine model of CRP was induced with
