Although the incidence of carcinoma of the stomach has steadily declined over the last 50 years, approximately 23,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States this year and 13,700 patients will die. Despite marked improvement in operative techniques, fewer than 20 per cent of those diagnosed with gastric cancer beyond the most superficial levels of invasion will survive for over five years. Significance of proximal partial gastrectomy for carcinoma of the upper portion of the stomach is reported. The 5-year postoperative survival rate was 58% in patients receiving proximal partial gastrectomy while it was 61% in those undergoing total gastrectomy. With respect to stage III cancer cases, there was no difference in the 5-year postoperative survival between the 2 groups. This paper describes the treatment of squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity in patients referred to the multidisciplinary clinics at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The majority of squamous cell carcinomas at this site involve the tongue and floor of mouth. One third have clinically abnormal cervical nodes at the time of presentation, and a further third are believed to have subclinical node involvement. An experience with 16 radical operations for cancer of the pancreatic body and tail is analysed. The increased resectability and reduced mortality was gained by elaborating and introducing into clinical practice some new original methods of surgery: an extensive left-sided resection of the pancreas, performed in 5 patients with one case of mortality, and the combined left-sided pancreatectomy, performed in 3 patients without lethal issues. A 3-year survival was noted in 3 patients, a 5-year survival--in 1.

Correlations between obesity and prognosis of operated cancer of the breast have not been investigated until now. In 491 patients operated upon by radical mastectomy (1968 to 1972) it can be demonstrated that in patients in whom the weight of the resected breast is above 1100 g the survival rates are more unfavourable than in other cases. The course of the disease in a 26-year-old patient showed that also an endocrinological clinical picture may be the basis of a gynaecomastia. Here the symptom gynaecomastia was bilaterally conditioned by a malignant chorion epithelioma. By this tumour a feminisation with gynaecomastia, atrophy of the testicles and positive HCG-test developes. The ascertainment of the diagnosis is possible with the help of the HCG-test. In the early diagnosis of a malignant chorion epithelioma new therapeutic consequences arise by cytostatic drugs.

In 220 cases of breast carcinoma with an anatomical size of less than 2 cm metastases outside the primarily affected quadrant could be demonstrated in the remaining breast in 23.6% of cases (n = 52). Axillary lymph node metastases were present in 3.93% (n = 86). With a tumour size up to 0.5 cm neither metastases in remaining breast tissue nor lymph node metastases could be found.
