BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations can be frequent and range in severity from relatively mild to status asthmaticus. The use of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is one of numerous treatment options available during acute exacerbations. While the efficacy of intravenous MgSO4 has been demonstrated, little is known about inhaled MgSO4.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the efficacy of inhaled MgSO4 in the treatment asthma exacerbations.
SEARCH STRATEGY: Randomised controlled trials were identified from the Cochrane Airways Group "Asthma and Wheez*" register. These trials were supplemented with trials found in the…

The cause of keratoconus is unknown. However, an earlier report demonstrated magnesium deficiency in keratoconus patients, and suggested that magnesium deficiency could pathologically affect the mechanisms of the cornea. Experimental and clinical papers concerning a possible relationship between keratoconus and magnesium deficiency were reviewed. These studies have demonstrated molecular and cellular alterations specific to the keratoconic cornea, including: thinning and fragmentation of membranes, degenerated cells and collagen fibres, swelling of the mitochondria, and biochemical abnormaliti…

The average dietary intake of magnesium is below recommended dietary allowances in many affluent Western countries. Prolonged low magnesium intake tends to result in hypomagnesaemia which might increase the risk of chronic diseases in elderly people. A national population-based cross-sectional nutrition survey, the Elderly Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (1999-2000), was used to investigate the magnesium status and association with diabetes in the Taiwanese elderly. Dietary magnesium intake was based on 24-hour dietary recalls. Blood biochemical parameters including plasma magnesium and …

During the last decade, the body of medical knowledge concerning the use of pharmacological doses of magnesium sulphate (MgSO(4)) for preterm labour has increased substantially. Several randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have provided compelling evidence that MgSO(4) is the drug of choice for maternal seizure prophylaxis in pre-eclampsia, whether preterm or term. In contrast, a recent Cochrane systematic review of the relevant contemporary literature has found no evidence basis to support the use of MgSO(4) for tocolysis in preterm labour. Furthermore, associated with high-dosage tocolytic Mg…

The aim of this paper is to discuss, on the basis of an extensive literature review, the role of magnesium in health and disease. Magnesium is an essential cation playing a crucial role in many physiological functions. It is critical in energy-requiring metabolic processes, in protein synthesis, membrane integrity, nervous tissue conduction, neuromuscular excitability, muscle contraction, hormone secretion, and in intermediary metabolism. Serum magnesium concentration is maintained within a narrow range by the small intestine and kidney which both increase their fractional magnesium absorption…

BACKGROUND: Peroral magnesium (Mg) administration, used as the only treatment in postmenopausal osteoporosis, has been shown to cause a significant increase of BD.
OBJECTIVES: To gauge the role of magnesium deficiency in the etiology of osteoporosis, we compared rats fed a Mg deficient diet daily with rats fed a Mg adequate diet over a period of one year.
METHODS: Sprague-Dawley female rats (mean weight 110, SD 23 g) were divided into two groups of 8 and randomly assigned to an identical semisynthetic diet, containing either 2000 ppm (group A) or 200 ppm Mg (group B). Urine samples were coll…

The aim of the study was to investigate the total content of the essential elements of zinc and magnesium levels in patients infected with Blastocystis hominis. Zinc and magnesium concentrations were measured in 52 patients who were positive for the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis. Scores were obtained for the positives and their age- and sex-matched 60 Blastocystis hominis-negative healthy controls. For comparison of two groups of continuous variables, the independent samples t-test was used. The mean concentration of magnesium in blood was significantly lower in Blastocystis hominis…

To determine the significance of routine serum magnesium determination in the ED, a retrospective analysis was done on 253 patients in whom serum magnesium levels were examined in the department of EM. Mild, moderate, and severe hypomagnesemia was found in 19.5%, 9.1%, and 2.5% of the study population, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, diabetes mellitus, gender, renal function, infectious diseases, and the presence of ischemic heart disease were associated with low serum magnesium levels. In multivariate analysis, only pregnancy and pregn…

We studied the role of magnesium (Mg) in congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS). Twenty-two congenital LQTS patients and 30 control subjects were included in this study. We measured serum Mg (SMg) level and Mg retention (MgR) level, and evaluated the role of Mg (a high MgR level reflects Mg deficiency in the body). The influence of intravenous Mg infusion on Mg level was evaluated. Relatively low SMg level and high MgR level (LQTS:control = 53:33%, p < 0.01) were recognized in congenital LQTS patients, but there was an overlap with controls. Mg supplementation did not shorten QT interval and there…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether migraineurs may have a systemic deficiency of magnesium.
BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency has been shown to play a potential role in the pathogenesis of migraine, but there are no data on total body magnesium status in migraineurs.
METHODS: An oral magnesium load test was performed by giving 3000 mg of magnesium lactate during a 24-hour interictal period to 20 patients with migraine (15 women and 5 men; mean age, 37.9 years) and 20 healthy volunteers (16 women and 4 men; mean age, 39.6 years). Baseline and postload magnesium concentrations were determined from…

A considerable number of experimental, epidemiological and clinical studies are now available which point to an important role of Mg2+ in the etiology of cardiovascular pathology. In human subjects, hypomagnesemia is often associated with an imbalance of electrolytes such as Na+, K+ and Ca2+. Abnormal dietary deficiency of Mg2+ as well as abnormalities in Mg2+ metabolism play important roles in different types of heart diseases such as ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, atheroscelerosis, a number of cardiac arrhythmias and ventricular complications in diabe

The distal tubule reabsorbs approximately 10% of the filtered Mg(2+), but this is 70-80% of that delivered from the loop of Henle. Because there is little Mg(2+) reabsorption beyond the distal tubule, this segment plays an important role in determining the final urinary excretion. The distal convoluted segment (DCT) is characterized by a negative luminal voltage and high intercellular resistance so that Mg(2+) reabsorption is transcellular and active. This review discusses recent evidence for selective and sensitive control of Mg(2+) transport in the DCT and emphasizes the importance of this c

To elucidate the contribution of magnesium to bronchial hyperreactivity in patients with stable bronchial asthma, magnesium concentrations in serum (S-Mg), erythrocytes (R-Mg), and lymphocytes (L-Mg) were measured in 25 patients with bronchial asthma (BA group) and 9 age-matched healthy subjects (control group). A parenteral magnesium loading test, a continuous low-dose magnesium infusion of 0.2 mEq/kg over 4 hr, was performed in 10 of 25 asthmatic patients and in the control group. R-Mg was significantly lower in the BA group than in the control group (4.96 +/- 0.47, 6.13 +/- 0.62 mEq/L, p < …

Numerous experimental, epidemiological and clinical studies have pointed out a relevant role for magnesium deficiency in the development of many cardiovascular diseases. Some pharmacological treatments may interfere with magnesium turnover, and magnesium deficiency may alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of some cardiovascular drugs. Loop and thiazide-like diuretics increase magnesiuresis, and total bodily magnesium deficiency may appear during prolonged treatment with diuretically active doses of these drugs. The potassium retaining agents, such as amiloride, triamterene and spiro…
