The magnesium retention test (MRT) was used together with muscle quadriceps lateralis biopsy in a pilot study of 5 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 6 healthy control persons. Included were men aged 35-65 years with no prior medication and/or diseases. The magnesium retention was 42% in the infarction group and 22% in the control group (p less than 0.01). A lower muscle content of magnesium in the AMI group confirms the MRT and indicates a magnesium deficiency. The bleeding time after the magnesium load was prolonged.

One hundred fifty-five recurrent noninfectious calcium oxalate stone formers were evaluated in an effort to assess the importance of magnesium excretion on calcium oxalate stone formation. All patients evaluated had normal urinary magnesium excretion, and any elevation of the calcium/magnesium ratio was related to the presence of hypercalciuria. The findings indicate that magnesium deficiency does not appear to be a significant cause of calcium oxalate urolithiasis. If magnesium supplement is of value in some patients, it is likely related to its inhibitory effect on calcium oxalate crystalliz…

Magnesium deficiency has been implicated as a possible causative factor in premenstrual tension (PMT). We have assessed serum and red cell magnesium concentration in nine normal premenopausal women and 26 PMT patients, using atomic absorption spectrometry. The following means +/- SEM were obtained from serum and red cell magnesium, respectively, in mg/100 ml: normal subjects: 1.7 +/- 0.04 and 4.5 +/- 0.25 PMT patients: 1.8 +/- 0.05 and 3.1 +/- 0.24. Mean red cell magnesium level was significantly (p less than 0.01) lower in PMT patients. Red cell magnesium determinations should be included in …

The paper states the results of hygienic evaluation of the actual average daily dietary and drinking water intakes of calcium and magnesium in the population of the Primorye territory in 2007. The use of phosphorus as a factor that influenced the assimilability calcium and magnesium was additionally studied. The investigation used the methods of budgetary follow-up and questionnaire surveys, by applying the data on the chemical composition of foodstuffs and individual types of drinking waters. There were inadequate actual average daily intakes of calcium (22-31.1% of the normal values) and par

Amniotic fluid samples from 21 diabetic pregnant women were pair-matched for gestational age with 21 samples obtained from nondiabetic women, and analyzed for magnesium concentration. Mean +/- standard deviation amniotic fluid magnesium concentration (mg/dL) was 0.86 +/- 0.21 in the diabetic group and 1.06 +/- 0.22 in the control group (P less than .001). It is concluded that in the diabetic pregnancy, a state of fetal magnesium deficiency exists. This deficient state may contribute to neonatal hypocalcemia in infants of diabetic mothers.

Magnesium is an essential element that regulates membrane stability and neuromuscular, cardiovascular, immune, and hormonal functions and is a critical cofactor in many metabolic reactions. The Dietary Reference Intake for magnesium for adults is 310 to 420 mg/day. However, the intake of magnesium in humans is often suboptimal. Magnesium deficiency may lead to changes in gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular function. Physical exercise may deplete magnesium, which, together with a marginal dietary magnesium intake, may impair energy metabolism efficiency and the capacity for phys…

The absolute necessity for magnesium in plant and animal nutrition is easily appreciated when one realizes that magnesium is found in high concentration in cells. It is necessary for photosynthesis in plants and for all reactions involving adenosine triphosphate in plant and animal cells. Although it is abundant in nature in general, deficiencies occur in both plants and animals. Human beings need about 5 mg of magnesium per kg of body weight per day. Infants and young children need twice as much. Children and women during pregnancy or lactation require significantly greater amounts than norma

OBJECTIVE: It has been revealed that low serum magnesium (Mg) is often associated with insulin resistance (IR), cardiovascular problems, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are known to have a high incidence of insulin resistance. This study was designed to determine whether women with PCOS exhibit serum magnesium deficiency and its potential association with IR.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 103 cases with PCOS and 103 normal women who were matched for their age and body mass index (BMI) were included. Blood samples were …

Epidemiological evidence suggests that magnesium deficiency may be a factor in the etiology of cardiovascular disease. In the present study, magnesium status was assessed in rabbits 10 weeks following the administration of a diabetogenic dose of alloxan which resulted in significant hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia. Decreased erythrocyte magnesium levels were apparent after 6-8 weeks, although no corresponding changes in the magnesium concentration of plasma were apparent. Depletion of magnesium was also observed in left ventricle, spleen, lung, pancreas and aorta. Insulin treatment (for 4 we…

Human magnesium deficiency states are known to be associated with tremor, choreiform and athetoid movements, delirium and convulsions. In order to assess a recent report of altered magnesium metabolism in Huntington's chorea, 6 patients with the disease have been studied with complete balance studies, exchangeable magnesium studies, erythrocyte and ultrafiltrable magnesiums and 2 patients with spinal fluid magnesium determinations. Balance studies failed to suggest any abnormalities. Exchangeable magnesium28 values were within normal ranges (4.3 ± 0.7 mEq./Kg. at 24 hrs.), as were erythrocyte …
