The percent of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep decreases dramatically between 10 and 30 days postnatally in the rat. The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is known to modulate waking and REM sleep. We recorded intracellularly from 127 neurons in the PPN in 12-21-day rat brainstem slices maintained in warmed, oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid. We identified three types of PPN neurons based on intrinsic membrane properties, type I (LTS), type II (A) and type III (A+LTS), as previously described. The percent of type I neurons increased from 6% at 12 days to 17% by 21 days, while the percent o

Brainstem is infrequently involved in patients with neurocysticercosis, usually, it occurs in association with disseminated form of neurocysticercosis. We are reporting two cases who had large multiple cysticercus lesions and presented as acute midbrain syndrome. The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis was established by presence of characteristic granulomatous extraaxial lesions around the midbrain, and in cerebral parenchyma, along with strongly positive ELISA for cysticercal antigen in cerebrospinal fluid as well as in serum. Both patients responded well to corticosteroids. However, repeat foll

To clarify the neural correlates and brain activity during the progression of human non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, we examined the absolute regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during light and deep NREM sleep and during wakefulness in normal humans using positron emission tomography with H(2)(15)O. Relative changes in rCBF during light and deep NREM sleep in comparison to the rCBF during wakefulness were also analyzed. During light NREM sleep, the rCBF in the midbrain, in contrast to that in the pons and thalamic nuclei, did not decrease when compared to that during wakefulness, whereas

Three patients who presented with parkinsonian signs resulting from a focal midbrain lesion are reported. In all patients parkinsonian features occurred acutely and improved following acute challenge with apomorphine but not with levodopa. Remission of parkinsonian signs occurred spontaneously to a different degree. Inconsistent clinical response following administration of levodopa has been well documented in patients with focal midbrain lesions associated with parkinsonian signs; however, the efficacy of apomorphine has not been tested before. Anatomic or etiologic features do not allow us t

A 20-year-old farmer who had headache and fever for 1 month, suddenly developed left hemiplegia, tremor in left arm and titubation followed by deep coma. Cranial CT scan revealed an infarction in right crus of midbrain. His CSF revealed 66 mg/dl protein, 10 lymphocytes/mm3, and 70 mg/dl glucose. CSF was positive for cryptococcal antigen. He improved following i.v. amphotericin 0.5 mg/kg and fluconazole 200 mg daily, continued for 6 and 12 weeks respectively. Infarctions though rare in cryptococcal meningitis should be considered in patients with chronic meningitis with vasculitis.

We report a case of Miller-Fisher syndrome with ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia. The main characteristics of this case were bilateral optic neuropathy and ponto-mesencephalic abnormalities on MRI. This case confirms the possible central neurologic localisation in this rare syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To examine in vivo the density of brain monoaminergic transporters in Tourette's syndrome (TS).
BACKGROUND: TS is a heritable neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by chronic vocal and motor tics and is often associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Hyperstimulation of dopamine receptors and dysfunction of serotonergic transmission have been implicated in its pathogenesis, but direct evidence of involvement of these neurochemical systems has been limited.
METHODS: Symptom severity and the availability of presynaptic monoaminergic transporters in the basal ganglia, midbrain

While unproved, environmental toxins of industrial and or agricultural origin represent an attractive theory to explain the increasing incidence of degenerative diseases of the nervous system such as Parkinson's disease (PD). We have examined several chemicals utilized in an area of Israel previously demonstrated to contain a statistically greater than average number of people with Parkinson's disease. One of these agents, a light stabilizer employed universally in the production of polyolifins used in plastics, depleted primary mesencephalic cultures of dopamine neurons, and produced a dopami

1. Spontaneous synaptic activity in networks formed by dissociated neurons from embryonic rat midbrain was analyzed in tight seal whole cell recordings. 2. Application of furosemide (0.5 mM) to the cell and its surrounding area increased the frequency of spontaneous synaptic currents. Incubation of the culture with furosemide resulted in "rhythmic" burst activity. 3. Furosemide (0.1-0.5 mM) changed equilibrium potentials of inhibitory postsynaptic currents, gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABAA) or glycine receptor-mediated Cl- currents by a blockade of Cl(-)-outward transport. Furosemide did not a

A 66-year-old man suddenly developed bilateral ptosis after awaking from a nap. He did not experience nausea, vomiting or headache. In the emergency room, high blood pressure was noted. On examination, his consciousness was clear. Ptosis was present bilaterally and worse on the right side. The pupils promptly constricted to light. He could fully adduct his eyes during conjugate gaze movements, but convergence was impaired in the right eye. There was no diplopia or nystagmus. The assessment of the motor and sensory systems revealed no significant findings. Computed tomographic scanning and magn

We studied 22 patients with first stroke and infarct limited to the midbrain on MRI. We selected these patients (8%) from 281 with posterior circulation infarct admitted consecutively into a primary care center. All patients underwent a systematic protocol of investigations including MR imaging and angiography, and echocardiography. Most infarcts fitted well to arterial territories drawn in preestablished templates. Middle midbrain involvement was the most common, mainly in the paramedian territory supplied by the basilar artery. Infarct in the mesencephalic territory of the posterior cerebral

Two cases of Claude's syndrome due to a mesencephalic infarction in the territory of the interpedoncular fossa arteries are reported. The first case had pupillary sparing while ptosis was lacking in the second case. Partial impairment of the oculomotor nerve suggests an intra-axial fascicular organization. However, the precise intra-axial pattern of the nerve is unknown in humans.

We report here a new case of oculomasticatory syndrome related to systemic Whipple's disease. The patient presented typical ophthalmoparesis associated with ocular myorhythmia consisting of 1 Hz convergent oscillations of both eyes. The masticatory involvement was remarkable and consisted of a permanent bruxism leading to severe tooth abrasions. Possible pathophysiology of such a disorder is discussed.

The topographic arrangement of the fascicular portion of the oculomotor nerve in the midbrain is not known. A patient with infarction involving the lateral portion of the fascicle had isolated monocular elevation paresis and ptosis, suggesting that the fibers destined to the elevators of the eye and eyelid course laterally in the fascicle.

Rats were trained to switch-off aversive electrical brain stimulations applied to the periaqueductal gray (PAG) or mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) by pressing a bar (switch-off behavior). We investigated the effects of IP injections of the benzodiazepine (BZ) receptor inverse agonist FG 7142 (2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg) or BZ receptor agonist chlordiazepoxide (CDP: 5 mg/kg) on the switch-off latency, i.e., the time elapsed between the onset of the stimulation and its offset by a press of the bar. It was found that FG 7142 decreased, whereas CDP increased the mean switch-off latency for electrical s
