The domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is widely used as a model in the study of human disease. However, many of the 78 chromosomes comprising the canine karyotype are extremely difficult to identify reliably by classical cytogenetics. A small ring-shaped supernumerary marker chromosome (SMC) was detected in 50% of metaphase cells in an 18-month-old boy with mental retardation and multiple congenital anomalies. Conventional cytogenetic methods had failed to identify the origin of the marker. Silver staining of nucleolus organizing regions (Ag-NORs) of acrocentric chromosomes and the frequency of satellite association (SA) in bone marrow (BM) cells from 7 patients with mycosis fungoides (MF), were studied.
