Blood Pressure Control and Other Quality of Care Metrics for Patients with Obesity and Diabetes: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: There are no population-level estimates in the United States for achievement of blood pressure goals in patients with diabetes and hypertension by obesity weight class. AIM: We sought to examine the relationship between the extent of obesity and the achievement of guideline-recommended blood pressure goals and other quality of care metrics among patients with diabetes. METHODS: We conducted an observational population-based cohort study of electronic health data of three large health systems from 2010-2012 in rural, urban and suburban settings of 51,229 adults with diabetes. Effects of mild to moderate sedation on saccadic eye movements.

Sedatives alter the metrics of saccadic eye movements. If these effects are nonspecific consequences of sedation, like drowsiness and loss of attention to the task, or differ between sedatives is still unresolved. A placebo-controlled multi-step infusion of one of three sedatives, propofol or midazolam, both GABA-A agonists, or dexmedetedomidine, an α2-adrenergic agonist, was adopted to compare the effects of these three drugs in exactly the same experimental conditions. 60 healthy human volunteers, randomly divided in 4 groups, participated in the study. Each infusion step, delivered by a com

Topographic distribution of cortical thinning in subtypes of multiple system atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the predominant degeneration of subcortical structures, recent studies have suggested the evidence of cortical involvement in multiple system atrophy (MSA). This study aimed to identify the different topographic pattern of cortical thinning in MSA according to clinical subtypes, and the association of cortical thinning with cerebellar atrophy and other disease related metrics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used cortical thickness analysis in 53 non-demented probable MSA patients (29 with MSA-C, 24 with MSA-P) and 35 healthy subjects and modeled local cortical thick

Patch design principles for oyster reef restoration: Lessons from fish habitat use in natural remnant systems.

Over 85% of oyster reef habitat has been lost or significantly degraded globally due to anthropogenic climate change, urbanization, and pollution. These systems provide critical habitat for fish communities, yet the relationship between oyster reef patch characteristics and fish assemblages remains poorly understood, limiting the effectiveness of restoration efforts. To address this gap, we conducted an extensive 3-year survey (2019-2021) of fish assemblages on natural remnant oyster reefs across three estuaries in temperate New South Wales, Australia, using unbaited remote underwater video sy

EEG-based neonatal seizure detection with Support Vector Machines.

OBJECTIVE: The study presents a multi-channel patient-independent neonatal seizure detection system based on the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. METHODS: A machine learning algorithm (SVM) is used as a classifier to discriminate between seizure and non-seizure EEG epochs. Two post-processing steps are proposed to increase both the temporal precision and the robustness of the system. The resulting system is validated on a large clinical dataset of 267 h of EEG data from 17 full-term newborns with seizures. RESULTS: The performance of the system using event-based metrics is reported.

Use of Thermotherapy in Management of Lymphedema: Clinical Observations.

We report clinical observations in 67 patients with chronic lymphedema undergoing hyperthermia. Our technique of hyperthermia is an alternative to microwave therapy, particularly where lymphangitis coexists in the same limb. Preoperative diagnostic evaluation including lymphatic and venous isotopic scintigraphy, Doppler venous flow metrics, and pressure manometry play an essential role in delineating the status of both the lymphatic and venous systems and in determining if hyperthermia is indicated. Our method of treatment consists of producing hot and humid ambience inside the chamber where t

Retinal microcirculation as a window to coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease includes obstructive epicardial stenosis and ischemia with non-obstructive coronary arteries driven by microvascular dysfunction. Population screening is limited by the invasiveness and cost of current coronary tests. Retinal imaging provides accessible biomarkers that reflect both epicardial atherosclerosis and coronary microvascular dysfunction, thereby supporting risk stratification and endotype differentiation in coronary artery disease. The aim was to summarize links between retinal measures and coronary anatomy, physiology, and clinical phenotypes to inform risk a

A novel methodological approach to understanding the cortical and subcortical effects of aerobic exercise in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Aerobic exercise mitigates symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and may slow disease progression; however, the neural mechanisms underlying these improvements are not well understood. In this study, we discuss the methodology for simultaneously recording local field potentials (LFP) from the subthalamic nucleus (STN), cortical activity using scalp electroencephalography (EEG), and exercise performance metrics during a 40-min aerobic cycling session. Data from a single patient with PD are presented to illustrate the utility, feasibility, and data integrity of the experimental set

Sex differences in autonomic recovery following repeated sinusoidal resistance exercise.

A simple bodyweight squat is sufficient to cause substantial stress on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) via ~30-50 mmHg blood pressure (BP) oscillations. However, it is unknown to the extent of the ANS is impacted during and immediately following bodyweight and resistance squat-stand maneuvers (SSM) while considering chromosomal sex. Thirteen females and twelve males performed four, 5-minute bouts of squat-stand maneuvers (SSM); two at 0.05 Hz (10-second squat/10-second stand) and two at 0.10 Hz (5-s squat/5-s stand). The SSM were performed using bodyweight resistance and additional external

Evaluation of fluence-smoothing feature for three IMRT planning systems.

Commercially available intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) inverse treatment planning systems (ITPS) typically include a smoothing function which allows the user to vary the complexity of delivered beam fluence patterns. This study evaluated the behavior of three ITPSs when varying smoothing parameters. We evaluated four cases treated with IMRT in our clinic: sinonasal carcinoma (SNC), glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), base of tongue carcinoma (BOT), and prostate carcinoma (PST). Varian Eclipse v6.5, BrainLAB BrainScan v5.31, and Nomos Corvus v6.2 ITPSs were studied for the SNC, GBM, and

Efficient Two-Stage Autofocus for Micro-Assembly Based on Joint Spatial-Frequency Image Quality Assessment.

Reliable autofocus is a fundamental prerequisite for precise positioning in micro-assembly systems, where complex reflections, scale variations, and narrow depth-of-field often degrade the robustness of traditional sharpness metrics. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient two-stage autofocus method for a dual-camera micro-vision system based on a spatial-frequency image quality assessment (IQA) model. First, we design WaveMamba-IQA for image sharpness estimation, synergistically combining the Discrete Wavelet Transform with Vision Transformers to capture high-frequency details an
