The curative and antioxidative efficiency of ivermectin and ivermectin + vitamin E-selenium treatment on canine Sarcoptes scabiei infestation.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the curative and antioxidative efficacy of ivermectin and ivermectin + vitamin E-selenium, and the influence of these agents on oxidative stress parameters in canines infested by Sarcoptes scabiei. Twenty two sarcoptic mites infested dogs and nine healthy dogs of 6 months to 2 years of age were divided into three groups. Group I comprised of healthy dogs (n=9) whereas animals in group II (n=11) and III (n=11) were positive for scabies. Group II animals were treated with only 1% ivermectin @ 0.2 mg/kg SC whereas group III were additionally t

Exploring Demodex in Chronic Urticaria: Lack of Association but Evidence for Type-2 Immune Activation in Demodex.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a mast cell driven multifactorial disorder with complex pathogenesis. While the association between CSU and internal parasites has been investigated, the association of ectoparasites such as Demodex mites remains elusive. This study aims to compare Demodex prevalence in CSU patients with healthy controls and to evaluate selected immunologic parameters in Demodex patients. A prospective case-control study was conducted including 100 patients with CSU and 50 age- and sex-matched controls. Skin surface biopsy was performed using the cyanoacrylate method, and

A molecular survey of zoonotic pathogens of public health importance in rodents/shrews and their ectoparasites trapped in Puducherry, India.

BACKGROUND: Globally, India has a high zoonotic disease burden and lacks surveillance data in humans and animals. Rodents are known reservoirs for many zoonotic diseases and their synanthropic behavior poses a great public health threat. METHODS: In this study, trapped rodents/shrews from randomly selected villages within Puducherry, India, and their ectoparasites were screened for zoonotic pathogens, namely, Orientia tsutsugamushi, other pathogenic rickettsiae, Leptospira spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Coxiella burnetii and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) using conventional P

Treatment of canine sarcoptic mange with afoxolaner (NexGard®) and afoxolaner plus milbemycin oxime (NexGard Spectra®) chewable tablets: efficacy under field conditions in Portugal and Germany.

The efficacy of NexGard® and NexGard Spectra® against sarcoptic mange in dogs was evaluated in a clinical field study. Skin scrapings from dogs presenting signs suggestive of sarcoptic mange were examined to confirm infestation. A total of 106 dogs were screened at eight sites in Portugal and Germany. In all, 80 dogs that had demonstrated ≥5 live Sarcoptes mites in five skin scrapings were enrolled, scored for specific clinical signs (pruritus; papules and crusts; alopecia), and allocated at random to receive either NexGard® or NexGard Spectra® twice, one month apart per label instructions. Ectoparasitic community of the Mahali mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus mahali: potential host for vectors of medical importance in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The endemic rodent family of Bathyergidae in Africa, particularly South Africa, are understudied as reservoirs of diseases of significant medical importance. Considering the diversity and wide distribution of African mole-rats in South Africa, many of these bathyergids could act as carriers of zoonoses. METHODS: The present study assessed the ectoparasite community of the Mahali mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus mahali). We aimed to identify possible parasitic arthropods that may infest this mole-rat species and explore host preference, contributions of seasonality, host sex and bod

Sand Fly Colony Crash Tentatively Attributed to Nematode Infestation.

Maintenance of laboratory colonies of insects and other arthropod pests offers significant research advantages. The availability, age, sex, housing conditions, nutrition, and relative uniformity over time of biological material for research facilitate comparison of results between experiments that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. A laboratory research colony of Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli), old world sand flies, was maintained with high-colony productivity for a number of years, but within a relatively short (4-6 mo) time period, colony productivity declined from over 10,000 flies

A Toxocara canis infection influences the immune response to house dust mite allergens in dogs.

BACKGROUND: The "hygiene hypothesis" suggests that a western way of life, including the extended use of anti-infective drugs, a high standard of hygiene and the resulting reduced exposure to microorganisms, could be one of the possible explanations for the increasing prevalence of allergic diseases in humans and animals. OBJECTIVES: we wished to evaluate if a nematode infection influenced IgE sensitization and allergic reactions to house dust mites in an experimental atopic dog model. METHODS: Twelve 10-week-old beagles were included: six of them were inoculated orally withToxocara canis (Tc

Extracts of Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer downmodulate secretion of IL-8 by skin keratinocytes and fibroblasts and of GM-CSF by fibroblasts in the presence of proinflammatory cytokines.

Previous in vitro studies showed that molecules in an extract of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei variety canis De Geer could modulate the secretion of cytokines from cultured normal human epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts in the absence of proinflammatory cytokines in the cell culture media. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether scabies extract could also modulate cytokine and chemokine secretion from epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts in the presence of proinflammatory cytokines that are likely present in the scabietic lesion in vivo. In particular, could th

Experimental infection of dogs with the nasal mite Pneumonyssoides caninum.

A successful experimental transmission of the canine nasal mite, Pneumonyssoides caninum, is described. Some 11 weeks after repeated systemic ivermectin treatment, four Beagles were inoculated via the right nostril with 20 P. caninum mites of different sexes and life stages, obtained at the necropsy of an infected dog. The inoculated dogs and a matching uninoculated control were observed for clinical signs for 14 weeks and then euthanised. Vague upper respiratory signs and a transient minor increase in the number of eosinophils in peripheral blood were recorded in the inoculated dogs. At necro

Identification of Ectoparasites Infesting Domestic Chickens and Evaluation of Control Practices Across Production Systems in and Around Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.

Ectoparasites threaten poultry health and productivity by decreasing egg production, lowering meat yields, and transmitting diseases. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence and identifying the main species of ectoparasites, as well as assessing the current control practices in poultry production systems in Dire Dawa. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2024. Data collection involved visual observation of the entire bodies of chickens and interviewing the producers. Out of 768 chickens examined, 577 were infested with one or more ectoparasite species, with an over

Early immune suppression leads to uncontrolled mite proliferation and potent host inflammatory responses in a porcine model of crusted versus ordinary scabies.

Scabies is a neglected tropical disease of global significance. Our understanding of host-parasite interactions has been limited, particularly in crusted scabies (CS), a severe clinical manifestation involving hyper-infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei mites. Susceptibility to CS may be associated with immunosuppressive conditions but CS has also been seen in cases with no identifiable risk factor or immune deficit. Due to ethical and logistical difficulties with undertaking research on clinical patients with CS, we adopted a porcine model which parallels human clinical manifestations. Transcripto

Demodex.

PURPOSE: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are ectoparasites with an astounding prevalence of 100% in patients aged 70 years and older. Every person in this age group is estimated to carry a colony of 1000 to 2000 mites. With such a high prevalence, little attention has been paid to the mite among eye care practitioners. We demonstrate a clinical sequence in a set of case reports to identify the mite. The clinical sequence includes a clinical history of blepharitis, dry eyes, and/or ocular allergy; slit lamp examination of cylindrical dandruff; and confirmation using light microscope eva
