Accident characteristics of professional versus regular two-wheeler riders in France and the UK: insights from national crash databases.

Two-wheeler (TW) use for delivery has expanded rapidly, yet the safety of these professional riders remains understudied. This study compared crash characteristics of professional and regular TW riders in France and the UK (2019-2023) using national crash databases, combining descriptive epidemiology and logistic regression. Professional riders were younger (median age: 31 vs. 33 and 34 for regular riders in France and the UK, respectively) and predominantly male (93.8% in France; 89.7% in the UK). They more often used light motorized TWs (59.1% in France; 56.0% in the UK) in urban, lower-spee

Fatal traffic accidents involving electric scooters in Poland in 2019-2023.

With the introduction of mobile applications that allow short-term rentals, electric scooters (e-scooters) are gaining popularity as a means of micromobility in urban areas. The aim of the study was to assess the circumstances and causes of death in traffic accidents involving electric scooters in Poland. The inclusion criteria for the study were met by 9 cases (7 M,2F; mean age: 40.3 years). Accidents usually occur during working days during the warm months, especially during the morning traffic rush hour. Usually, these accidents involved another vehicle (4/9 cases). In addition, the victim

Powered two-wheeler riders' risk of crashes associated with filtering on urban roads.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to estimate the crash risk per kilometer traveled by powered two-wheeler (PTW) riders filtering through traffic on urban roads. METHODS: Using the traffic injury crashes recorded by the police over a period of 3 years on 14 sections of urban roads in the city of Marseille, France, and a campaign of observations of PTWs, the crash risk per kilometer traveled by PTWs filtering was estimated and compared to the risk of PTWs that did not filter. RESULTS: The results show that the risk of PTW riders being involved in injury crashes while filtering is sign

[Graft replacement under percutaneous cardiopulmonary system for traumatic aortic rupture with multiple injuries].

We report a case of traumatic aortic rupture with multiple injuries. A 20-year-old man was transferred to our hospital. He was suffering from traumatic thoracic aortic rupture with multiple injuries (femoral fracture, pelvis fracture and so 4th) due to a traffic accident. Enhanced computed tomography revealed leakage from the aortic isthmus and hematoma in the surrounding area. Emergency operation was performed. The left 4th intercostal thoracotomy was performed and a lacerated foramen was observed across the lesser curvature of the aortic isthmus. The affected site was replaced by a prostheti

Achilles tendon rupture with open distal tibia and fibula fracture.

The authors present a previously unreported case of an open fracture of the distal tibia and fibula with associated Achilles tendon rupture in a 27-year-old motorcyclist. Management followed established trauma principles of wound exploration, debridement, and stabilization of the fracture with reamed locked intramedullary nailing of the tibia. The injury to the Achilles tendon was not identified until surgical exploration for fixation of the fracture. This required a 2-stage operative approach, involving initial debridement and fracture fixation followed by Achilles tendon repair during the se

Massive hemoperitoneum due to ruptured inferior phrenic artery pseudoaneurysm after blunt trauma.

There had been no previous reports of ruptured pseudoaneurysm of inferior phrenic artery shortly after blunt abdominal trauma. Traumatic arterial pseudoaneurysms are either iatrogenic or the result of penetrating injuries and one of the sequelae of trauma. Post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm develops at varying time intervals after the initial insult. To our knowledge, this is the first report of massive hemoperitoneum caused by ruptured inferior phrenic artery pseudoaneurysm after blunt trauma. Pseudoaneurysm of inferior phrenic artery in patient with diaphragm injury is potentially a life-threaten

Rupture of the innominate artery from blunt trauma: current options for management.

BACKGROUND: Rupture of the innominate artery is the second most common intrathoracic arterial injury from blunt trauma. It is frequently accompanied by major trauma to other organs. The traditional management is expeditious surgical repair. METHODS: Three patients presented to the Emergency Department after motor vehicle collisions with traumatic rupture of the innominate artery from 2001 to 2003. One patient presented with an isolated innominate artery injury. The other two patients presented with multi-system trauma. All patients underwent surgical repair; however, repair was individualized

On the possible role of positive end-expiratory pressure ventilation in the treatment of chylothorax caused by blunt chest trauma.

Recent reports on the treatment of chylothorax postulate a benefit to ventilator therapy, especially using positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). This report describes the use of mechanical ventilation with PEEP in the management of a 24-year-old male motorcyclist who sustained a ligamentous Chance fracture of the thoracic spine at the T6-7 level with bilateral traumatic chylothorax. Treatment of the chylothorax consisted of high PEEP ventilation, bilateral chest tube thoracostomies, and total parenteral nutrition. The chylothoraces resolved within 4 days of treatment and mechanical ventilat

The Judet quadricepsplasty for management of severe posttraumatic extension contracture of the knee. A report of a bilateral case and review of the literature.

Extension contracture of the knee is an increasingly recognized complication of severe femur fracture. Traditional management by Thompson quadricepsplasty may result in a variable return of knee flexion and the possibility of significant extension lag. The Judet technique of quadricepsplasty offers the advantages of a controlled, sequential release of the components limiting knee flexion and a reduced potential for iatrogenic quadriceps rupture or extension lag. Judet quadricepsplasty corrected severe bilateral extension contractures with excellent results at 17 months postoperatively in a 29-

Off-Road Vehicle Trauma in Southern California: Association With the Social Vulnerability Index.

BackgroundOff-road vehicles' (ORVs) inherently unstable design lends to higher injury rates compared to motorcycles. California has ranked among the top five states for ORV-related injuries and deaths for the past decade. Because ORVs are frequently used in rural areas with greater social vulnerability, concerns exist that injuries disproportionately affect disadvantaged populations. This study evaluates whether ORV injury rates and severity are associated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) in Southern California.MethodsWe performed a retrosp…
