Music therapy (MT) is increasingly being integrated into intensive care unit (ICU) settings to modulate pain, stress, and emotional dysregulation. Although clinically promising, objective biomarkers for quantifying its neurophysiological effects are still missing. In this context, the electroencephalogram (EEG) represents a valid tool to assess cortical dynamics associated with cognitive-affective engagement elicited by MT. Our study aims to evaluate the role of electroencephalography as an objective tool for monitoring cortical responses to MT in the ICU. EEGs acquired from nine burn patients…

Anxiety associated with taking exams jeopardizes students' mental and physical health. Complementary alternative methods, such as aromatherapy and music therapy, have shown promise in reducing negative emotions among students. However, few studies have examined the effects of these interventions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aromatherapy and music therapy on nursing students' blood pressure (BP) and heart rate before taking an exam. This quasi-experimental, double-blinded study was conducted in 2023 at the Nursing College of Abadan University of Medical Sciences in Abadan, Ir…

INTRODUCTION: Complexities such as TBI and co-occurring conditions such as homelessness impact Veterans' awareness and use of health care services offered in the VHA and the community. Thus, targeted interventions that engage and reduce barriers to care among Veterans with interconnected challenges are needed. Research has suggested that music therapy interventions are well received by both active-duty Service Members and Veterans, but little is available on music therapy-based programming to address the complex needs of Veterans with interconnected challenges.
METHODS: The purpose of this pr…

INTRODUCTION: Musical sensory orientation training (MSOT) is an innovative technique to improve the state of consciousness and cognitive function. Compared with traditional arousal therapies, MSOT offers a non-invasive, safe, and easily operable alternative with no side effects. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary investigation into the effect of MSOT in improving consciousness levels in patients with DoC (Disorders of Consciousness), as well as the feasibility of its clinical application, thereby providing reference for future large-sample randomized controlled studies.

OBJECTIVE: To assess potential feasibility of a targeted music intervention trial in older ED patients and association with clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Prospective pragmatic trial of adults aged ≥65 years in the ED, with prevalent delirium or increased risk of incident delirium, receiving either 2-h music intervention via headphones or usual care. The primary outcomes were (i) feasibility as assessed by actual use of the intervention (target 70% of offered patients) and (ii) incident delirium in delirium-free patients.
RESULTS: Among 211 initially screened patients, 44 were included. The ini…

This is an outline for a podcast. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease in which there is increasing loss of dopamine neurones from the basal ganglia (Simon et al. Clin Geriatr Med. 36(1):1-12). Motor symptoms, which are usually asymmetrical, include resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement) and, usually later on, postural instability. PD is primarily a clinical diagnosis although a DaTscan, which if positive shows asymmetrical loss of dopamine uptake in the basal ganglia, is helpful in cases of doubt (Tsang and Walker J Neurol 270(5):2550-2558).

BACKGROUND: Ketamine exerts potent but transient antidepressant effects in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Combinations of ketamine and psychotherapy have attracted interest, but no trial has investigated a psychedelic model of ketamine-psychotherapy for TRD to our knowledge.
AIMS: This secondary analysis of a randomised clinical trial (RCT) explores the therapeutic effects and experiential mechanisms of the Montreal Model of ketamine-psychotherapy for TRD, with or without music.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDOC) pose significant challenges to healthcare workers due to their severe motor impairments and limited interaction with the environment. Non-invasive brain stimulation such as high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) and music stimulation show promise in awakening this population.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present a protocol aiming at investigating the efficacy of combined HD-tDCS and music stimulation in awakening patients with pDOC through a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that individualized music listening is an effective, non-pharmacological intervention for improving the quality of life of people with dementia in the institutional care setting. Noting that most people with dementia live at home, we conduct a randomized controlled trial to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of an app-based individualized music listening intervention for people with dementia in the home care setting. The intervention is delivered by family caregivers.
METHODS: We will recruit N = 130 dyads consisting of one person with dementia living at home…

INTRODUCTION: Music is an intriguing but relatively under-researched intervention with many potential benefits for mechanically ventilated patients. The review aimed to assess the impact of listening to music as a non-pharmacological intervention on the physiological, psychological, and social responses of patients in an intensive care unit.
METHODS: The literature review was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2022. The overview included papers found in Science Direct, EBSCO, PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, and original research papers published in English meeting the PICOS criteria. Articles published…

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer, but it has many adverse reactions, particularly nausea and vomiting. Music therapy can reduce anxiety symptoms, avoid the response to the human body under various stress conditions through psychological adjustment, and improve the adverse reactions of chemotherapy.
AIM: To investigate the impact of music therapy on relieving gastrointestinal adverse reactions in chemotherapy for patients with digestive tract cancer by meta-analysis.

The potential impact of music-making on air quality around musicians was inferred at the outset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic from measurements on individual musical instruments and from theoretical considerations. However, it is unclear to what extent playing together in an orchestra under optimal ventilation conditions really increases infection risks for individual musicians. In this study, changes in indoor air quality were assessed by measuring common parameters, i.e., temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide, along with particle counting and determining the presence of airborne ph…

Prior studies indicate differences in brain volume and neurophysiological responses of musicians relative to non-musicians. These differences are observed in the sensory, motor, parietal, and frontal cortex. Children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience deficits in auditory, motor, and executive function domains. Therefore, we hypothesized that short-term music training in children with an FASD due to prenatal alcohol exposure may improve brain function. Children (N = 20) with an FASD were randomized to participate in either five weeks of piano training or to a control grou…

The constant increase in the graying population is the result of a great expansion of life expectancy. A smaller expansion of healthy cognitive and brain functioning diminishes the gains achieved by longevity. Music training, as a special case of multisensory learning, may induce restorative neuroplasticity in older ages. The current study aimed to explore aging effects on the cortical network supporting multisensory cognition and to define aging effects on the network's neuroplastic attributes. A computer-based music reading protocol was developed and evaluated via electroencephalography meas…

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the temporo-parietal area has been applied to treat both auditory verbal hallucinations as well as tinnitus.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that 1 Hz rTMS to the left temporoparietal junction (TPJ) may be beneficial in alleviating musical hallucinations (MH), another condition with auditory experiences in the absence of an external source.
METHODS: Here we describe a patient with almost insufferable life-long MH with comorbid depression, who received inhibitory rTMS to the left TPJ as well as the right do…
