Cervical cancer narratives: invoking 'God's will' to re-appropriate reproductive rights in present-day Romania.

Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork in contemporary Southern Romania, this paper scrutinises local moralities governing some women's refusal to enrol in free reproductive healthcare initiatives targeting cervical cancer through primary and secondary prevention (human papillomavirus [HPV] vaccination and Papanicolaou [Pap] testing, respectively). Women backed up their rejection of participation in official reproductive care programmes by mentioning 'God's will' as the ultimate trigger of cervical cancer. They withheld their own and their daughters' bodies from biomedical intervention and used d

Untold stories of infant loss: the importance of contact with the baby for bereaved parents.

This article presents secondary analysis of data from parents who, 50 to 70 years ago, birthed stillborn babies or babies with lethal anomalies and from adult children born after these losses. The stories reflect a time in history when parents were "protected" from seeing or holding their babies and mothers were unable to attend the funeral. There was no understanding by society or caregivers for parents' need to process the loss or resources to build memories. They provide a strong argument for health care providers to offer such resources to parents today and offer grief support.

Exploring men's and women's experiences of depression and engagement with health professionals: more similarities than differences? A qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: It is argued that the ways in which women express emotional distress mean that they are more likely to be diagnosed with depression, while men's relative lack of articulacy means their depression is hidden. This may have consequences for communicating with health professionals. The purpose of this analysis was to explore how men and women with depression articulate their emotional distress, and examine whether there are gender differences or similarities in the strategies that respondents found useful when engaging with health professionals. METHODS: In-depth qualitative interview

Identifying neuropathologic disease in primary progressive aphasia using narrative speech.

INTRODUCTION: We present an application of artificial intelligence to narrative speech with the primary objective of predicting neuropathologic disease underlying primary progressive aphasia (PPA). METHODS: Using natural language processing toolkits, features were extracted from transcribed narratives of the Cinderella story. Machine learning ensemble models classified participants as either normal controls (NC) or as individuals with PPA and a subsequent autopsy-confirmed neuropathologic diagnosis of either Alzheimer's disease (AD) or 4-repeat tauopathy under the umbrella of frontotemporal l

Personal narratives to support learning about lung transplant for people with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cystic fibrosis (CF) causes progressive respiratory disease and premature death. Lung transplantation (LTx) is an important treatment consideration for people with CF (PwCF). Among PwCF, does preparedness for LTx and knowledge about LTx improve by reading personal narratives from CF LTx recipients ("CF Stories")? METHODS: Adults with CF were recruited and presented with online CF Stories. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires assessed LTx preparedness, knowledge, and decisional conflict. Deductive thematic analysis of study visits was conducted. RESULTS: Twenty-five participa

Story Sharing for Sexual Health: Piloting Culturally Relevant Intervention with South Asian Immigrant Women in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: There is a scarcity of research on sexual health education among women in South Asian diasporic communities in Canada, resulting in a need for designing culturally relevant approaches to teach about sexual health and HIV prevention, seen as taboo topics. This community-based research study was designed to determine the effectiveness of using culturally relevant stories as a model for sexual health education for South Asian immigrant women (Toronto, Canada). DESIGN: South Asian women participants were randomly allocated to either a fact-based intervention (n = 40) or a story-based i

Using a Culturally Tailored Narrative to Increase Cervical Cancer Detection Among Spanish-Speaking Mexican-American Women.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of translating films, and whether the use of narrative is an effective vehicle for producing changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding cervical cancer compared with a nonnarrative film. A randomized controlled telephone trial surveyed the effectiveness of two films our team produced among a sample of 300 monolingual Spanish-speaking women, ages 25 to 45, who were of Mexican origin. Participants were recruited using random digit dialing (RDD) procedures from 2013 to 2014 in Los Angeles County and were

Evaluating Personal Stroke Narratives from Bilingual Greek-English Immigrants with Aphasia.

OBJECTIVE: For people with aphasia (PWA) and their significant others, narratives are intricately intertwined with quality of life, culture, and social participation. This paper reports stories told by bilingual people with aphasia (bPWA), describing the events or consequences of a stroke on their lives. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six participants with chronic mild-moderate anomia (mean age 70 years) spontaneously produced a narrative recounting their personal experience of stroke in their native language (Greek) and in their second language (English). All bPWA had learned English in early adultho

Tainted commons, public health: the politico-moral significance of cholera in Vietnam.

In October 2007, a series of cholera epidemics broke out in Hanoi, interrupting a moment of economic triumphalism in post-transition Vietnam. In seeking the source of a refractory disease associated with poverty and underdevelopment, officials, media, and citizens not only identified scapegoats and proposed solutions, they also endorsed particular visions of moral conduct, social order, and public health. Controversy over cholera, a potent politico-moral symbol, expressed an imaginary of "tainted commons" (i.e., an emergent space of civil society and small-scale entrepreneurship from which the

Listening comprehension across the adult lifespan.

OBJECTIVES: Although age-related declines in perceiving spoken language are well established, the primary focus of research has been on perception of phonemes, words, and sentences. In contrast, relatively few investigations have been directed at establishing the effects of age on the comprehension of extended spoken passages. Moreover, most previous work has used extreme-group designs in which the performance of a group of young adults is contrasted with that of a group of older adults and little if any information is available regarding changes in listening comprehension across the adult lif

Ethnophysiology and contraceptive use among low-income women in urban Brazil.

Distrust and dissatisfaction with contraceptive methods among low-income Brazilian women contributes to incorrect contraceptive use, harmful health risks, and an extensive reliance on surgical sterilization. Data from ethnographic fieldwork in a low-income neighborhood in urban Brazil illustrate that women's concerns regarding contraception make sense in the context of their general health and illness beliefs and their understanding of reproductive physiology. Women interpret and experience biomedical concepts and contraceptive methods (such as "hormones" and oral contraceptives, respectively)

"Becoming the real me": recovering from anorexia nervosa.

We investigated the process of recovery from anorexia nervosa using grounded theory. Open-ended interviews conducted with 9 women who had recovered from anorexia nervosa revealed that recovery focused on rediscovery and redefinition of the self and included the following: (1) seeing the dangers, (2) inching out of anorexia, (3) tolerating exposure without anorexia, (4) gaining perspective by changing the anorexia mindset, and (5) discovering and reclaiming self as "good enough." The process of recovery described in this study may provide a useful framework for helping women understand their ow

From damaged nerves to masked depression: inevitability and hope in Latvian psychiatric narratives.

Psychiatric language in Latvia has been invaded by the diagnosis of depression and masked depression. Depression has been promoted by the translation into Latvian of the International Classification of Diseases and by conferences organized by pharmaceutical companies and aimed at educating psychiatrists and family doctors about the new diagnostic categories. The language of depression represents a radical departure from older languages of somatic distress that were central both to Soviet Psychiatry and to lay conceptualizations of distress. However, the new practitioners who favour the diagnos
