BACKGROUND: It is well established that smoking is the most significant risk factor for bladder cancer, yet the impact of smoking on the recurrence and progression of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) remains a contentious issue.
OBJECTIVE: To review all relevant literature published to date, providing a comprehensive assessment of the effects of smoking on the recurrence and progression of NMIBC, thereby offering a basis for smoking cessation management in NMIBC patients.
METHODS: A search was conducted for all relevant literature published up to April 2024 in PubMed, Web of Scienc

BACKGROUND: A second transurethral resection of bladder tumour (Re-TURBT) is recommended by European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines on non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers (NMIBCs) due to the risk of understaging and/or persistent disease following the primary resection. However, in many cases this may be unnecessary, potentially harmful, and significantly expensive constituting overtreatment. The CUT-less trial aims to combine the preoperative staging accuracy of Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) and the intraoperative enhanced ability of photodynamic diagnosis (PDD)

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the efficacy and adverse events of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) versus Mitomycin C (MMC) in high-risk Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) patients.
METHODS: This randomized controlled study was conducted over 24 months in four hospitals in Egypt. A sample of 90 patients was randomly assigned to either treatment group, with procedures including baseline examinations, a single postoperative instillation of chemotherapy, a 6-week induction cycle of the assigned drug, and regular follow-up cystoscopies and upper urinary tract imaging. Treatment results and

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinico-pathological characteristics of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) treated in metropolitan France over 1 year when bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) was subject to a national quota, and to document, in the context of recurrent shortages of intravesical BCG for NMIBC, the real-life indications for adjuvant treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2021 and February 2022, the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) asked the French Association of Urology to propose a science-based quota solution for BCG using a clinical score. T

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 75% of bladder cancer cases are non-muscle invasive at diagnosis. Drug development for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) has historically lagged behind that of other malignancies. No treatment has demonstrated the ability to overcome drug resistance that ultimately leads to recurrence and progression. Gene therapy is emerging as a promising option for patients with NMIBC.
AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the clinical application of gene therapy in NMIBC management and discusses recent clinical trials involving the adenoviral vector-based treatment nad

PURPOSE: To understand the treatment plans suggested for BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive disease (NMIBC) patients in the Arab countries and therapeutic decisions applied for BCG-naive patients during BCG shortage time.
METHODS: A 10-minute online survey was distributed through the Arab Association of Urology (AAU) office to urologists in the Arab countries who treat patients with NMIBC.
RESULTS: One hundred six urologists responded to the survey. The majority of urologists had treated, in the past 6 months, > 10 patients with NMIBC who were considered BCG-unresponsive (55% of respondent

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Intravesical mitomycin C (MMC) instillations are recommended to prevent recurrence of intermediate-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (IR-NMIBC); however, the optimal regimen and dose are uncertain. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of adjuvant MMC and compare different MMC regimens in preventing recurrence.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in November 2023 for studies investigating recurrence-free survival (RFS) among patients with IR-NMIBC who received adjuvant MMC. Prospective trials with different MMC r

INTRODUCTION: There are various doses, durations, and strains of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) intravesical instillation therapy, but optimal treatment has not yet been established. We retrospectively investigated the efficacy and safety of low-dose BCG therapy for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and carcinoma in situ (CIS) in a multicenter study.
METHODS: From 1991 to 2019, 323 patients who received BCG therapy to prevent recurrence of NMIBC were analyzed as group A. Similarly, 147 patients who received BCG therapy for the treatment of CIS were analyzed as group B. Patients recei

BACKGROUND: Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) maintenance therapy is the standard adjuvant treatment of high- and intermediate-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, the problems of shortages and the adverse effects, both local and systemic, that it causes lead to the search for alternatives with devices that improve the penetration of intravesical chemotherapeutics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective observational study was conducted from August 2018 to August 2022. Patients diagnosed with intermediate and high-risk NMIBC without CIS who received one of the following three tr

BACKGROUND: Devices that increase the penetration of intravesical chemotherapeutic agents have been developed as alternatives to the use of bacillus Calmette-Guérin, in short supply at a time of increasing global incidence of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). We performed a prospective observational study to compare 2 of these devices in the treatment of patients with high- and intermediate-risk NMIBC. The primary endpoint was the recurrence-free rate. Secondary endpoints were the rate of progression and adverse events.
METHODS: After undergoing transurethral bladder resection, 98 p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Treatment options for high-risk (HR) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) are still limited. The addition of systemic immunotherapy to intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillations is currently being explored as an initial strategy for BCG-naïve HR NMIBC patients to enhance treatment effectiveness and decrease the risk of BCG failure.
METHODS: A collaborative narrative review of the literature by the Cancer Committee of the French Association of Urology (CC-AFU) was carried out to describe ongoing studies assessing systemic immunotherapy in BCG-naïv

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There has been a recent surge in the development of agents for bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive (BCG-U) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Critical assessment of these agents and practical recommendations for optimal selection of patients and therapies are urgently needed, especially in the absence of randomized trials on bladder-sparing treatment (BST) options.
METHODS: A global committee of bladder cancer experts was assembled to develop recommendations on BST for BCG-U NMIBC. Working groups reviewed the literature and developed draft recommendations,

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current evidence on diagnostics and clinical decision-making for patients with cervical spine neoplasms.
BACKGROUND: Although the cervical spine is disproportionately affected by primary spinal tumors and is the predominant site for intramedullary spinal cord tumors, there remains a relative paucity of reviews focused specifically on cervical spine neoplasms.
METHODS: PubMed and Scopus were searched using a combination of terms related to cervical spine neoplasms, classification schemas, diagnostic evaluation, staging, and clinical de
