A Clinicopathological Analysis of Melanocytic Nevi: A Retrospective Series.

Purpose: Melanocytic nevi are common cutaneous lesions. This study aimed to demonstrate the concordance and discordance between clinical and histopathological diagnoses of melanocytic nevi and the importance of histological evaluation in differentiating malignant lesions from diseases with similar clinical manifestations. Patients and Methods: We studied 4,561 consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of melanocytic nevi from 2014 to 2019. We compared the clinical diagnosis with the histopathological diagnosis to establish a histopathological concordance rate and then investigated the eff

In situ expression patterns of melanoma-inhibiting activity (MIA) in melanomas and breast cancers.

Elevated levels of melanoma-inhibiting activity (MIA) were measured previously in the serum of patients with metastasized melanomas and in a subgroup of patients with advanced-stage breast cancers. This study aimed therefore to visualize in situ expression patterns of MIA protein and mRNA in melanomas and breast cancers by means of immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and in situ hybridization. Analysis of a panel of seven common melanocytic naevi, ten cutaneous melanomas, and 12 melanoma metastases detected high levels of both mRNA and protein in all

Differences in Endoscopic Features of Gastric Neuroendocrine Tumor and Neuroendocrine Carcinoma From a Clinicopathological Perspective.

Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms are a rare type of stomach cancer, classified into well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). Gastric NETs (G-NETs) originate from endocrine progenitor cells in the basal layer of the mucosa, primarily in the setting of chronic atrophic gastritis, such as autoimmune gastritis. They generally exhibit low malignancy and a favorable prognosis. By contrast, gastric NECs (G-NECs), a rare subtype of gastric cancers, arise from endocrine precursor cell clones that dedifferentiate in the deep portion of

Clinical-Dermoscopic-Histopathological Correlations in Collision Skin Tumours.

OBJECTIVES: Collision tumours are rare situations characterised by the coincidence of two different skin neoplasms in the same lesion. METHODS: We have analyzed 41 collision skin tumours from one department in the clinical-dermoscopic-histopathologic correlations. RESULTS: We present 41 collisions tumours. The mean age of our patients was 67.9 years, the mean diameter of the lesion was 11.6 mm. The most frequent locations were trunk (27 lesions) and head/neck (11 lesions). The collisions were classified as benign/benign (13 cases), benign/malignant (25 cases) and malignant/malignant (3 cases

A Rare Case of Oral Mucosal Amelanotic Melanoma in a 77-year-old Immunocompromised Man.

Primary mucosal melanomas are rare neoplasms that occur in the mouth, esophagus, nasopharynx, larynx, and anogenital mucosa. Mucosal melanomas are rare, accounting for approximately one percent of all melanomas. Of the mucosal melanomas that occur in the head and neck, oral mucosal melanomas compose approximately 25 percent. Here, we present a case of an amelanotic oral mucosal melanoma of the mucosal lip in a 77-year-old male patient with a history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The patient presented with a pink, nonpigmented, pedunculated mass on t

Phasor-FLIM as a Screening Tool for the Differential Diagnosis of Actinic Keratosis, Bowen's Disease, and Basal Cell Carcinoma.

The aim of this study was to distinguish basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from actinic keratosis (AK) and Bowen's disease (BD) by fluorescence lifetimes of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and phasor analysis. Pseudocolor images of average fluorescence lifetime (τm) exhibited more contrast than conventional bright field and/or fluorescence images of H&E-stained sections. The mean values (μ) of τm distribution (τmμ) in three layers of skin were first explored for comparison with the corresponding layers of AK, BD, and BCC. Moreover, analysis of the H&E fluorescence lifetimes in the phasor space was perfor

Recurrent Benign Salivary Gland Neoplasms.

The most important causes of recurrence of benign pleomorphic adenoma are enucleation with intraoperative spillage and incomplete tumor excision in association with characteristic histologic findings for the lesion (incomplete pseudocapsule and the presence of pseudopodia). Most recurrent pleomorphic adenomas (RPAs) are multinodular. MRI is the imaging method of choice for their assessment. Nerve integrity monitoring may reduce morbidity of RPA surgery. Although treatment of RPA must be individualized, total parotidectomy is generally recommended given the multicentricity of the lesions. Howev

Perigestational dietary folic acid deficiency protects against medulloblastoma formation in a mouse model of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Hereditary nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is caused by PTCH1 gene mutations that result in diverse neoplasms including medulloblastoma (MB). Epidemiological studies report reduced pediatric brain tumor risks associated with maternal intake of prenatal vitamins containing folic acid (FA) and FA supplements specifically. We hypothesized that low maternal FA intake during the perigestational period would increase MB incidence in a transgenic NBCCS mouse model, which carries an autosomal dominant mutation in the Ptch1 gene. Female wild-type C57BL/6 mice (n = 126) were randomized to 1

A novel mutation of the PTCH1 gene activates the Shh/Gli signaling pathway in a Chinese family with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a predisposition to neoplasms and developmental abnormalities. Mutation of the PTCH1 gene, which is considered to be responsible for NBCCS, was investigated in a Chinese NBCCS family in this study. METHODS: Genomic DNA was isolated from blood samples of all eight living individuals in this family. Mutation analysis of PTCH1 was done by amplified polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing. Biophysical predictions of the altered protein were made using various bioinformatics tools. To

[Ovarian Leydig cell tumor].

INTRODUCTION: Leydig cell tumors are sex cord-stromal tumors with sexual steroid production (predominantly testosterone). They account for less than 0.6% of ovarian neoplasms and mostly appear at the age of 28. HISTOPATHOLOGY: It is a solid yellowish nodular tumor, less than 5 cm in diameter. It consists of polygonal Leydig cells, eosinophillic cytoplasm with lipid vacuole and lipochrome pigments. Nuclei are oval, pleomorphic with rare nucleoli. Hyperthecosis is around the tumor. CASE DESCRIPTION: Signs and symptoms depend on age of women and testosterone levels. Women complain about hirsuti

Surgical management and outcomes in localized vulvar basal cell carcinoma: a National Cancer Database Study.

We evaluated factors associated with positive surgical margins and overall survival in localized vulvar basal cell carcinoma using the National Cancer Database (2004-2023). Patients with localized vulvar basal cell carcinoma undergoing surgical resection were included. Multi-variable logistic regression identified factors associated with positive margins. Overall survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and multi-variable Cox regression. Among 2998 patients, 249 (8.3%) had positive margins. Older age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.022 per year, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.008 to 1.0

Intraoral Basal Cell Carcinoma: Controversies and Insights From a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The existence of intraoral basal cell carcinoma (IOBCC) remains controversial, despite reported cases in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search of four electronic databases and grey literature was conducted. Strict inclusion criteria were established to define a true case of IOBCC, including Ber-EP4 positivity to distinguish it from peripheral ameloblastoma and the absence of a history of skin lesions-either nearby, which could indicate direct infiltration, or at distant sites, which could suggest metastasis rather than a true primary IOBCC. RESULTS: A total o

Reconstruction of Large Full-Thickness Medial Lower Eyelid Defects Using a Medially Based Tarsoconjunctival Pedicle Flap.

Reconstruction of large full-thickness medial lower eyelid margin defects often requires centrally based tarsoconjunctival pedicle flaps from the ipsilateral upper eyelid in combination with anterior lamellar grafting. However, centrally based flaps may result in temporary obstruction of the visual axis in the affected eye. The authors present a novel modified surgical technique using a medially based tarsoconjunctival pedicle flap from the upper eyelid for the reconstruction of large full-thickness medial lower eyelid defects. A tarsoconjunctival flap was mobilized and hinged medially by the

Aggressive basal cell carcinoma in a non-facial location in a cat: Perineural and lymphatic invasion with metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in cats are generally regarded as benign skin tumors with low metastatic potential. However, rare cases of aggressive behavior and metastasis, primarily in the context of facial lesions, have been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old neutered male Scottish Fold cat presented with a chronic, non-healing ulcer on the left hock. The initial excision lacked a histopathological diagnosis, and the lesion recurred. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed basal cell carcinoma. Despite limb amputation with clear margins and no regional lymph node involvement, dista

Vismodegib in Gorlin-Goltz syndrome: A systematic review.

Treatment with Hedgehog Inhibitors in Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) yields favourable objective clinical responses, yet secondary resistance and class-related toxicity restrict treatment duration. This study aims to review current data on GGS patients undergoing vismodegib therapy, focusing on treatment duration, clinical outcomes and schedule modifications. A systematic search of the PubMed database was conducted for English articles from 1993 to 2023, identifying 31 papers suitable for inclusion. A total of 351 patients, with a mean age of 52 years, were analysed. The average treatment duratio
