An intracranial malignant teratoma was identified in a 91-day-old male Wistar rat manifesting central nervous system-related clinical signs. This tumor occupied the right midbrain and portions of the right caudal cerebrum and cranioventral cerebellum. Microscopically, the tumor contained intermingled cartilage, bone (with medullary hematopoietic tissue), fibrous connective tissue, skeletal muscle, fat, pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, stratified squamous epithelium, serous and mucoserous glands, and neural tissue with ependymal and choroid plexus epithelia. Poorly differentiated cells wit

Of the 34,384 cervical smears sampled by cervical scraping and Cytobrush, reactive glandular atypia was found in 1.7%, low-grade glandular atypia in 0.08%, and high-grade glandular atypia/adenocarcinoma in 0.05%. Cells of reactive glandular atypia and low-grade atypia could be distinguished from those of high-grade atypia/adenocarcinoma by the architecture of the cellular aggregates, nuclear morphology, and nuclear-cytoplasmic ratios. Further histologic studies found that most reactive and low-grade atypias were associated with condyloma, squamous dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, and cervicitis.

Saprophytic infestation with Aspergillus was observed in pathologic specimens of primary squamous cell lung carcinoma. In one case, the fungus grew in cystic scarred parenchyma and bronchi distal to an obstructing carcinoma of a segment bronchus. In the other, fungi colonized the inner surface of a peripheral cavitary carcinoma. Neither patient had roentgenographic evidence of aspergilloma and neither experienced severe pulmonary hemorrhage or other complications attributable to the presence of fungus. Although both specimens showed colonizing growth within the abnormal air spaces, in neither

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation and a propensity for early spread to regional lymph nodes. Since surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment of MCC, differentiation of MCC from malignant lymphoma, metastatic small cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma is very important and is sometimes challenging with routine histologic examination. Immunohistochemical studies may be required to differentiate MCC from other primary and metastatic skin neoplasms. Previously, the authors reported that microtubul

Penile cancer is a rare neoplasm with heterogeneous prevalence influenced by risk factors such as smoking, poor hygiene and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Southern Africa, South America and Southeast Asia have the highest incidence of this disease. Penile squamous cell carcinomas (PSCCs) account for the majority of instances of penile cancer, with HPV-related carcinogenesis implicated in up to half of them. Increases in PSCC incidence in industrialized nations parallel the rising high-risk HPV infection rates, particularly HPV-16. Early-stage, localized PSCC is often manageable, but tre

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) from neoplasm undergoing mucinous features brings more pitfalls to pathologists. Combining specific MAML2 gene rearrangement and histological characteristics may be the solution.
METHODS: Twenty-five tumors with mucinous components were selected for differential diagnosis of MEC. All the cases were detected for MAML2 gene rearrangement. The cases diagnosed as MEC were classified into four variants: classic, oncocytic, Warthin-like, and nonclassified, and they were graded using the Brandwein system. The histological chara

A great deal of attention has been given to epithelial differentiation in Ewing family of tumors (EFTs) in recent years, with studies showing variable keratin expression in 20% to 32% of cases. A 29-year-old man presented with a right-sided Horner syndrome suggesting a sympathetic chain related lesion. No radiologic evidence of a mass was appreciated initially. Several months later, he developed right vocal cord palsy and a large right-sided neck mass. An open biopsy demonstrated a high-grade malignant neoplasm with sheets of undifferentiated round cells infiltrating soft tissues and a large p

Verrucous carcinoma (VC) of the vulva is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva that afflicts older women and is characterized by a well-differentiated morphology with minimal nuclear atypia. The pathogenesis of VC is uncertain and a putative role for human papillomavirus (HPV) is doubtful. We analyzed 9 vulvar VCs from 7 patients diagnosed as VC of the vulva over the past 10 years at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The patients ranged from 75 to 93 years in age (median, 83 years). One also involved the vagina and another coexisted w

BACKGROUND: p53 gene aberrations are the most common genetic changes seen in human carcinogenesis. Frequently, single point mutations are detected, resulting in increased levels of (an aberrant) p53 protein in tumor cells. The cellular protein produced appears to become immunogenic during tumor development, inducing the production of circulating antibodies against p53.
METHODS: For this study, sera from 126 patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas (102 primary tumours and 24 recurrent/secondary tumours) were examined for p53 autoantibodies and their further clinical course was followed up

INTRODUCTION: While the vast majority of penile malignancies are of epithelial origin, most commonly squamous cell carcinoma, mesenchymal tumors of the penis, though rare, represent an important and diagnostically diverse group of neoplasms with variable clinical behavior.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved cases of primary penile mesenchymal tumors diagnosed or treated at our institution over a 24-year period. Histologic diagnoses were confirmed through systematic review of archived hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemical slides. Clinical data were extracted from electronic medical re

Penile squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are common, potentially life-threatening neoplasms of horses. They are well-recognized to be caused by Equus caballus papillomavirus (EcPV) type 2, although EcPV2 cannot be detected in all cases. A 23-year-old standardbred gelding developed multiple penile in situ and invasive SCCs that contained histological evidence of PV infection. By using both consensus and specific PCR primers, these lesions were found to contain EcPV7 DNA, but not DNA from EcPV2 or any other PV type. To determine how frequently EcPV7 is present in equine penile SCCs, specific prime

NUT carcinoma, also known as NUT midline carcinoma, is an aggressive malignancy mainly affecting the midline structures of younger patients and almost invariably leading to death within a few months of the diagnosis. Morphologically, NUT carcinoma consists of sheets of monomorphous small or medium size cells with scant cytoplasm, commonly featuring areas of abrupt squamous differentiation with keratinization. Immunohistochemistry for NUT protein is sensitive and specific, typically showing a speckled nuclear reactivity, assisting in diagnosis. The molecular background of NUT carcinoma includes

UNLABELLED: The molecular subtypes of urothelial carcinoma in each classification scheme have characteristic immunohistochemical features. At the same time, the results of conducted studies often demonstrate a discrepancy between the genomic profile of urothelial carcinoma and its immunophenotype, which complicates the immunohistochemical verification of the molecular subtypes of these tumors.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of the molecular subtypes of urothelial carcinoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgical specimens from 196 patients diagnosed with

Postmortem findings in 241 equids admitted to a teaching hospital that were at least 15 years old at autopsy were reviewed (1) to determine disease prevalence, (2) to compare the cause of death (or euthanasia) in equids 15 to 19 years of age (n = 116) with that in equids ≥20 years of age (n = 125), and (3) to catalog coexisting lesions in equids with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). Breed and sex were evenly distributed between the age groups. Death or euthanasia was attributed to disease of the digestive system (41.5%), pituitary gland (12.9%), locomotor system (10.0%), nervous s

BACKGROUND: Multiple primary cancer (MPC) is defined as two or more primary malignant tumours in the same or a different organ that are simultaneous or metachronous. The reported incidence of MPC varies between 2 to 17%. The vast majority are patients with two primary neoplasms, while quadruple cancers are extremely rare. We present the first documented case of quadruple primary malignant neoplasms, comprising breast ductal carcinoma, papillary urothelial carcinoma, laryngeal fibrosarcoma, and lung squamous cell carcinoma.

The terminology and classification of keratoacanthoma (KA) and other types of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with crateriform architecture have not been clarified. The study evaluated the clinicopathological features of 41 nodular (exo-endophytic) SCC lesions with a central keratin-filled crater, including KA (well-developed stage). The lesions were histopathologically classified into six categories: (i) KA (well-developed stage) (27 lesions); (ii) KA-like SCC (three lesions); (iii) KA with malignant transformation (three lesions); (iv) infundibular SCC (crateriform) (four lesions); (v) crateri

Cytokeratins of normal epithelia and of some neoplasms of the female genital tract were studied by immunofluorescence microscopy of frozen sections and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal proteins from microdissected tissues. All normal epithelia were stained with the monoclonal cytokeratin antibody KG 8.13 whereas certain monoclonal antibodies stained only simple epithelia. As revealed by gel electrophoresis the normal epithelia of the ovarian surface, oviduct, endometrium and endocervix contained cytokeratin polypeptides Nos. 7, 8, 18 and 19. In contrast, stratified exocer

Family physicians play a critical role in early detection of skin cancers. Although visual inspection is the initial step, dermoscopy significantly improves diagnostic accuracy, particularly for melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. Advanced imaging technologies such as reflectance confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and high-frequency ultrasonography may further enhance accuracy and reduce unnecessary procedures. However, these technologies are primarily used in academic or specialty dermatology settings. Biopsy is required for definitive diagnosis. For nonmelanoma skin cancers, n

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma (MM) are the three most common malignant neoplasms that arise in the skin. Deregulation of oncogene function not infrequently leads to an increased rate of cellular proliferation. However, the expansion of malignant cells can also occur if programmed cell death is inhibited. The oncogene bcl-2 participates in the regulation of apoptosis (programmed cell death). In view of this, we determined the presence and possible role of bcl-2 in primary cutaneous malignancies. Routine paraffin sections
