When Mothers are About to Return to Work After Maternity Leave: A Descriptive Study in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The return to work after maternity leave is reported to be a stressful event for many mothers. Yet, little is known about their experience just before returning. This descriptive study explored mothers' evaluation of this period, their levels of anticipatory postpartum work resumption stress (APWRS), their caregiving decisions, and factors that could support them. METHODS: Self-reported data were collected from 236 Dutch mothers of infants planning to return to work within the next month. RESULTS: One in five mothers in our sample assigned an unsatisfactory evaluation rating (fiv

Presence of red foxes and contamination with Echinococcus multilocularis on soft fruit farms in Limburg, the Netherlands.

Echinococcus multilocularis (fox tapeworm), with the red fox as the main definitive host, is a major foodborne parasite in Europe and is emerging in the Netherlands. While wild berry consumption is often communicated as a risk factor for foodborne E. multilocularis infection, contamination of commercially grown soft fruits remains poorly studied. This study assessed fox presence and E. multilocularis contamination on commercial soft fruit farms in Limburg, an endemic area in the Netherlands. During the 2024 harvest season (June-August), 220 soft fruit and 220 soil samples were collected on 22 …

Incidence and spatial variation of Parkinson's disease in the Netherlands (2017-2022): a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a growing public health concern with a largely unknown aetiology. Understanding temporal trends, demographic drivers, and regional variations in PD risk is critical for guiding healthcare planning and identifying potential environmental and socioeconomic risk factors. We aimed to investigate the incidence and spatial distribution of PD in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2022, and examined demographic and socioeconomic disparities in PD risk. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, population-based study leveraging complementary strengths of multiple independen…

Candidozyma auris in The Netherlands: No Evidence of Nosocomial Transmission Supported by Effective Infection Control Policies.

The yeast Candidozyma auris has emerged globally as a major threat to public health. Outbreaks are frequently reported and difficult to control. In the Netherlands, C. auris is rarely detected although national surveillance has been set up. Here, we present all Dutch C. auris cases reported from March 2018 until April 2025. Antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) using broth microdilution and whole genome sequencing (WGS) were conducted to evaluate antifungal resistance and genetic relatedness. A total of 26 cases of C. auris infection or colonization were reported across 22 different medical…

Discovery of similar multidrug resistance regions in nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae outbreaks in three hospitals in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes between bacteria increases the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance worldwide. In 2019, three hospitals in Limburg (the Netherlands) detected multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae with similar phenotypes. We investigated whether these similar resistance patterns resulted from clonal spread, plasmids or other mobile genetic elements conferring resistance. METHODS: Forty-nine Enterobacteriaceae isolates with similar multidrug-resistant phenotypes were sequenced to assess clonality and to characterize resistance genes, their co-lo…

The Early Childhood Curiosity Questionnaire: Development and Psychometric Properties in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Germany.

Curiosity in early childhood is associated with exploration, learning, and cognitive growth, yet little is known about how trait curiosity can be reliably assessed in preschoolers. This paper reports the development and validation of a caregiver-report measure designed to assess curiosity in children aged 2-5 years across three cultural contexts: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany. Pursuing three objectives, we (1) generated 41 age-appropriate items by adapting and extending the Infant and Toddler Curiosity Questionnaire (ITCQ; Altmann et al., 2025a), first in English, followed b…

Educational background and vaccination beliefs in the Netherlands: A Bayesian Evidence Synthesis from four studies.

BACKGROUND: Although studies repeatedly show that higher educated individuals uphold more positive beliefs about vaccines than their lower educated counterparts, emerging evidence suggests that vaccine skepticism can also be found among highly educated individuals in certain contexts. Given these divergent perspectives on the relation between educational background and vaccine beliefs, the present study investigated (a) the magnitude of educational differences in vaccination attitudes and (b) educational differences in changes in vaccination attitudes over time after the COVID-19 pandemic. 20 years of blood management and VTE prevention in orthopedic surgery in the Netherlands - a nationwide survey.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in arthroplasty care have progressively improved patient outcomes, including reduced bleeding and venous thromboembolism rates. Consequently, blood-saving measures applied pre-, peri- and postoperatively as well as thromboprophylaxis regimens have evolved over time. To evaluate these developments, we conducted a 2023 follow-up to the national surveys from 2002, 2007 and 2012, examining current blood-saving strategies and thromboprophylaxis use in The Netherlands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2023, a questionnaire designed to match the previous surveys was distributed to al…

Scenario-driven shifts in future Usutu and West Nile virus outbreak characteristics in the Netherlands.

Mosquito-borne virus transmission is shaped by its ecological context, including land use, climate, and population dynamics. Future changes in these factors may therefore affect the risk and intensity of Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) outbreaks in the Netherlands. We compared a reference scenario to four future Shared Socio-economic Pathway scenarios developed for the Netherlands, which differed in land use, host distribution, mosquito distribution, and temperature. Temperature (between + 1.0 °C and + 1.7 °C) and mosquito abundance (between + 5% and + 10%) were predicted to incre…

Targeted monitoring informed by mapping the ongoing spread of tick-borne encephalitis virus, the Netherlands.

BACKGROUNDTick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) was detected in the Netherlands in 2015. Current monitoring through serology in deer, tick collection and reported human cases, may underestimate areas of virus circulation. Including estimates of suitability of the habitat for TBEV can guide risk-based monitoring.AIMWe aimed to improve the accuracy of the TBEV distribution map by adding estimates of TBEV habitat suitability to guide targeted tick monitoring in newly identified risk regions.METHODSHabitat suitability for TBEV was assessed by calculating the basic reproduction number (R0) for 1 km2…

Treatment and survival of patients with esophageal and gastric cancer in the Netherlands and Belgium: A population-based comparison.

Despite demographic and socio-economic similarities between the Netherlands and Belgium, differences in survival for patients with esophageal and gastric cancer between the two countries exist. This population-based study investigated these survival differences with the aim of identifying explaining factors. We analyzed data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (N = 26,980) and the Belgian Cancer Registry (N = 15,097) for patients diagnosed with esophageal or gastric cancer between 2010 and 2016. Survival differences were examined using relative survival, stratified for tumor location and stag…

Recovery Colleges or Something Different? The Development and Evaluation of a Reflection Tool for Recovery Colleges in the Netherlands.

Recovery Colleges (RCs) are increasingly implemented worldwide, with a fidelity measure recently developed in the United Kingdom (UK). However, RCs may vary based on their operating contexts. In the Netherlands, a key deviation is that RCs are often peer-run rather than co-produced with mental healthcare providers, as outlined in the fidelity measure. This study assessed the measure's suitability in the Dutch context, leading to the development of a reflection tool (Phase 1) which was subsequently evaluated (Phase 2). The development phase involved focus groups with peer facilitators and coord…

A Bottom-Up Analysis of the Cost of Illness of Parkinson's Disease in the Netherlands from a Societal Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) places a high burden on patients, their families, healthcare systems, and society as a whole, which is rising due to the increasing prevalence of PD. There has been wide variation in the items included in previous cost of illness (COI) studies for PD, possibly underestimating the costs associated with this disease. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to undertake a detailed estimate of the COI of PD in the Netherlands from a societal perspective. METHODS: Between November 2022 and May 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional COI study with a bottom-up, prevalence-bas…

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociation in a Clinical Sample of Refugees in the Netherlands: Evidence for a Dissociative Subtype.

An increasing number of studies have been investigating the co-occurrence of posttraumatic symptoms and dissociation in trauma-exposed samples. As traumatized refugees are particularly susceptible to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PTSD and dissociation in a traumatized refugee sample. Cross-sectional data from a clinical refugee sample (N = 526) were collected. Latent class analysis (LCA) examined different classes of PTSD, based on the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) items. Subsequently, i
