Neural Networks With Disabilities: An Introduction to Complementary Artificial Intelligence.

Machine learning is a good tool to simulate human cognitive skills as it is about mapping perceived information to various labels or action choices, aiming at optimal behavior policies for a human or an artificial agent operating in the environment. Regarding autonomous systems, objects and situations are perceived by some receptors as divided between sensors. Reactions to the input (e.g., actions) are distributed among the particular capability providers or actuators. Cognitive models can be trained as, for example, neural networks. We suggest training such models for cases of potential disab

Chaotic Harris Hawks Optimization with Quasi-Reflection-Based Learning: An Application to Enhance CNN Design.

The research presented in this manuscript proposes a novel Harris Hawks optimization algorithm with practical application for evolving convolutional neural network architecture to classify various grades of brain tumor using magnetic resonance imaging. The proposed improved Harris Hawks optimization method, which belongs to the group of swarm intelligence metaheuristics, further improves the exploration and exploitation abilities of the basic algorithm by incorporating a chaotic population initialization and local search, along with a replacement strategy based on the quasi-reflection-based le

Skin Lesion Classification Using Additional Patient Information.

In this paper, we describe our method for skin lesion classification. The goal is to classify skin lesions based on dermoscopic images to several diagnoses' classes presented in the HAM (Human Against Machine) dataset: melanoma (MEL), melanocytic nevus (NV), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), actinic keratosis (AK), benign keratosis (BKL), dermatofibroma (DF), and vascular lesion (VASC). We propose a simplified solution which has a better accuracy than previous methods, but only predicted on a single model that is practical for a real-world scenario. Our results show that using a network with additio

Interhemispheric Cortical Network Connectivity Reorganization Predicts Vision Impairment in Stroke.

Stroke is one of the main causes of disability in human beings, and when the occipital lobe is affected, this leads to partial vision loss (homonymous hemianopia). To understand brain mechanisms of vision loss and recovery, graph theory-based brain functional connectivity network (FCN) analysis was recently introduced. However, few brain network studies exist that have studied if the strength of the damaged FCN can predict the extent of functional impairment. We now characterized the brain FCN using deep neural network analysis to describe multiscale brain networks and explore their correspond

A Lightweight CNN Model for Detecting Respiratory Diseases From Lung Auscultation Sounds Using EMD-CWT-Based Hybrid Scalogram.

Listening to lung sounds through auscultation is vital in examining the respiratory system for abnormalities. Automated analysis of lung auscultation sounds can be beneficial to the health systems in low-resource settings where there is a lack of skilled physicians. In this work, we propose a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to classify respiratory diseases from individual breath cycles using hybrid scalogram-based features of lung sounds. The proposed feature-set utilizes the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The performa

Deep Learning and Binary Relevance Classification of Multiple Diseases using Chest X-Ray images.

Disease detection using chest X-ray (CXR) images is one of the most popular radiology methods to diagnose diseases through a visual inspection of abnormal symptoms in the lung region. A wide variety of diseases such as pneumonia, heart failure and lung cancer can be detected using CXRs. Although CXRs can show the symptoms of a variety of diseases, detecting and manually classifying those diseases can be difficult and time-consuming adding to clinicians' work burden. Research shows that nearly 90% of mistakes made in a lung cancer diagnosis involved chest radiography. A variety of algorithms an

Deep Convolutional Neural Network-Aided Detection of Portal Hypertension in Patients With Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Noninvasive and accurate methods are needed to identify patients with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). We investigated the ability of deep convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis of computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) to identify patients with CSPH. METHODS: We collected liver and spleen images from patients who underwent contrast-enhanced CT or MR analysis within 14 days of transjugular catheterization for hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement. The CT cohort comprised participants with cirrhosis in the CHESS1701 study, performed

Accelerating massively parallel hemodynamic models of coarctation of the aorta using neural networks.

Comorbidities such as anemia or hypertension and physiological factors related to exertion can influence a patient's hemodynamics and increase the severity of many cardiovascular diseases. Observing and quantifying associations between these factors and hemodynamics can be difficult due to the multitude of co-existing conditions and blood flow parameters in real patient data. Machine learning-driven, physics-based simulations provide a means to understand how potentially correlated conditions may affect a particular patient. Here, we use a combination of machine learning and massively parallel

Tempel: time-series mutation prediction of influenza A viruses via attention-based recurrent neural networks.

MOTIVATION: Influenza viruses are persistently threatening public health, causing annual epidemics and sporadic pandemics. The evolution of influenza viruses remains to be the main obstacle in the effectiveness of antiviral treatments due to rapid mutations. The goal of this work is to predict whether mutations are likely to occur in the next flu season using historical glycoprotein hemagglutinin sequence data. One of the major challenges is to model the temporality and dimensionality of sequential influenza strains and to interpret the prediction results. RESULTS: In this article, we propose

Quantitative neurotoxicology: Potential role of artificial intelligence/deep learning approach.

Neurotoxicity studies are important in the preclinical stages of drug development process, because exposure to certain compounds that may enter the brain across a permeable blood brain barrier damages neurons and other supporting cells such as astrocytes. This could, in turn, lead to various neurological disorders such as Parkinson's or Huntington's disease as well as various dementias. Toxicity assessment is often done by pathologists after these exposures by qualitatively or semiquantitatively grading the severity of neurotoxicity in histopathology slides. Quantification of the extent of neu

Towards better heartbeat segmentation with deep learning classification.

The confidence of medical equipment is intimately related to false alarms. The higher the number of false events occurs, the less truthful is the equipment. In this sense, reducing (or suppressing) false positive alarms is hugely desirable. In this work, we propose a feasible and real-time approach that works as a validation method for a heartbeat segmentation third-party algorithm. The approach is based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which may be embedded in dedicated hardware. Our proposal aims to detect the pattern of a single heartbeat and classifies them into two classes: a hear

Toward real-time polyp detection using fully CNNs for 2D Gaussian shapes prediction.

To decrease colon polyp miss-rate during colonoscopy, a real-time detection system with high accuracy is needed. Recently, there have been many efforts to develop models for real-time polyp detection, but work is still required to develop real-time detection algorithms with reliable results. We use single-shot feed-forward fully convolutional neural networks (F-CNN) to develop an accurate real-time polyp detection system. F-CNNs are usually trained on binary masks for object segmentation. We propose the use of 2D Gaussian masks instead of binary masks to enable these models to detect different

Prediction of N6-methyladenosine sites using convolution neural network model based on distributed feature representations.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a well-studied and most common interior messenger RNA (mRNA) modification that plays an important function in cell development. N6A is found in all kingdoms of life and many other cellular processes such as RNA splicing, immune tolerance, regulatory functions, RNA processing, and cancer. Despite the crucial role of m6A in cells, it was targeted computationally, but unfortunately, the obtained results were unsatisfactory. It is imperative to develop an efficient computational model that can truly represent m6A sites. In this regard, an intelligent and highly discrim

Deep Recurrent Neural Networks for Automatic Detection of Sleep Apnea from Single Channel Respiration Signals.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that causes repeated breathing interruption during sleep. The performance of automated apnea detection methods based on respiratory signals depend on the signals considered and feature extraction methods. Moreover, feature engineering techniques are highly dependent on the experts' experience and their prior knowledge about different physiological signals and conditions of the subjects. To overcome these problems, a novel deep recurrent neural network (RNN) framework is developed for automated feature extraction and detection of apnea events from single r

The Development of a Skin Cancer Classification System for Pigmented Skin Lesions Using Deep Learning.

Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify images of melanoma, with accuracies comparable to those achieved by dermatologists. However, the performance of a CNN trained with only clinical images of a pigmented skin lesion in a clinical image classification task, in competition with dermatologists, has not been reported to date. In this study, we extracted 5846 clinical images of pigmented skin lesions from 3551 patients. Pigmented skin lesions included malignant tumors (malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma) and benign tumors (nevu

A Basic Study on Detection of Movement State in Stride by Artificial Neural Network for Estimating Stride Length of Hemiplegic Gait Using IMU.

In order to perform rehabilitation training for improving motor function, measurement of movements and evaluation of motor function become effective. In our research group, the method of estimating stride length during walking by using an inertial sensor attached to the foot was developed. However, since the method used thresholds to detect movement state in each stride for calculation of stride length, there was a difficulty in determination of threshold values for each subject and each stride with hemiplegic subjects in some cases. This study aimed at developing an automatic detection method

Statistical and artificial neural network-based analysis to understand complexity and heterogeneity in preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy associated disease. It is characterized by high blood pressure and symptoms that are indicative of damage to other organ systems, most often involving the liver and kidneys. If left untreated, the condition could be fatal to mother and baby. This makes it important to delineate the complexities associated with the disease at a molecular level that would help develop methods for early diagnosis. In microarray-based studies, Textoris et al. and Mirzakhani et al. have analyzed the transcriptome with a view to identify biomarkers for preeclampsia. The current study has

Informative sensor selection and learning for prediction of lower limb kinematics using generative stochastic neural networks.

We propose a novel approach of selecting useful input sensors as well as learning a mathematical model for predicting lower limb joint kinematics. We applied a feature selection method based on the mutual information called the variational information maximization, which has been reported as the state-of-the-art work among information based feature selection methods. The main difficulty in applying the method is estimating reliable probability density of input and output data, especially when the data are high dimensional and real-valued. We addressed this problem by applying a generative stoc
