[Confronting the Health-Related Challenges of Climate Change: Nursing Education for the Future].

Climate change is the greatest threat to public health in the 21st century. The increasing health impact of heat waves, the increasing magnitudes and spatial expansions of vector and water-borne diseases epidemics, and the increasing medical burdens of biological allergic illnesses, worsening local air pollution, and other related issues are expected to continue to increase in severity in the near future. All of these issues are global problems that must be faced. Adaptation strategies and action plans related to climate change are needed and emerging. Moreover, integrating the basic concepts,

Gaps in the primary care of rural and underserved populations: the impact of nurse practitioners in four Mississippi Delta states.

PURPOSE: The shortage and distribution of primary care providers (PCPs) has left a gap in the health care of society, particularly those residents within the Lower Mississippi River Delta region, where pockets of rural and underserved populations reside. Described in this study are the workforce distribution, characteristics, and likelihood of advanced practice nurses (APNs) to practice in these communities. DATA SOURCES: Surveys were completed by 479 APNs in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Other sources included census data and the designation of Health Professional Shortage

Disorder-specific psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder--a systematic review of the evidence for mental health nursing practice.

AIMS: To systematically review the evidence for the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder and examine the implications for mental health nursing practice. BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with significant psychosocial impairment and high use of mental health services. Generally medication is effective in the treatment of acute episodes but there is increasing evidence that while a large majority of patients recover from these episodes of mania and/or depression, many do not achieve a functional recovery. In response a range of psychotherapies have either been a

Stakeholder perceptions of a nurse led walk-in centre.

BACKGROUND: As many countries face primary care medical workforce shortages and find it difficult to provide timely and affordable care they seek to find new ways of delivering first point of contact health care through developing new service models. In common with other areas of rural and regional Australia, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is currently experiencing a general practitioner (GP) workforce shortage which impacts significantly on the ability of patients to access GP led primary care services. The introduction of a nurse led primary care Walk-in Centre in the ACT aimed to fu

Academic-community partnerships as a strategy for positive change in the sexual behavior of rural college-aged students.

Students who completed the preintervention survey were asked to complete the 74-item questionnaire again to determine if risky behavior had changed over time. Substantial reductions in risky behaviors were reported. Students reporting five or more sex partners in the previous year decreased from 13% to 4%. Students reporting "always" or "mostly" using a condom increased from 51% to 61%. Other positive findings indicated that students who had contracted a STD decreased from 8% to 2%, and students who experienced an unwanted pregnancy decreased from 12% to 4% [21]. However, despite the positive

Fostering health in the foster care maze.

The fastest growing population of children in foster care today is quite young, and many of these children have significant health care needs. The General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that children in foster care "are among the most vulnerable individuals in the welfare population" (GAO, 1995, p. 1). Poverty, increased homelessness, substance abuse, and a rise in the incidence of persons with HIV all contribute to the problems faced by these children. The Caring Communities for Children in Foster Care Project, funded by the Maternal Child Health Bureau Integrated Services Medical Home Init

State Funding and Period Product Access in Missouri Schools: A Statewide Study of Lead School Nurses.

Period poverty is increasingly recognized as a public health equity issue, yet limited research has examined the implementation of school-based menstrual health and hygiene programs in the United States. This study investigates Missouri school nurses' perceptions of state government funding for menstrual hygiene products, availability of products in schools, and students' needs related to period poverty. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative design, an electronic survey was emailed to lead school nurses in Missouri public and charter schools from February to March 2024. Those who serve student

Barriers and Nursing Strategies in Oncology Care for LGBTQIA+ People: A Scoping Review.

LGBTQIA+ individuals with cancer face significant challenges in their interactions with nurses, which can negatively affect the quality of care, treatment adherence, and access to healthcare. Barriers such as implicit biases, discrimination, and inadequate communication skills contribute to these disparities, alongside a lack of nursing education on gender and sexual diversity. Despite the recognized role of nurses in reducing health inequalities, knowledge about effective strategies to overcome these barriers remains fragmented. This scoping review aims to identify and categorize the main bar

Constructing educational content for neonatal palliative care: A Delphi method and needs analysis.

BACKGROUND: High-risk newborns face significant mortality risks and potential for recovery, making neonatal palliative care essential. However, existing neonatal palliative care education for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses often prioritizes end-of-life care and overlooks family involvement and long-term management needs. AIM: To develop and prioritize neonatal palliative care educational content tailored for NICU nurses, addressing gaps in current curricula and supporting family-centered, evidence-based practice. METHODS: A three-round Delphi survey was conducted to identify key

Comparing the Spanish flu and COVID-19 pandemics: Lessons to carry forward.

Just as people living in the early 1900s experienced the horrors of World War I followed by the Spanish influenza epidemic, those of us surviving the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic will have our lives forever changed. Both pandemics defied the capabilities of prevailing healthcare and public health. Since there was no known cure in either pandemic, much depended on nurses to fight the battle against the viruses. History has shown pandemics are occurring more frequently and are unpredictable in timing and severity. Therefore, we need to place focus on the valuable lessons from the century's

Effectiveness of Assertive Therapy for Parents in Managing Adolescent Emotions.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents experienced significant psychosocial stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic due to movement restrictions, social isolation, and disruptions in routine, which adversely affected emotional regulation. As primary caregivers, parents play a critical role in supporting adolescents' emotional well-being, particularly during prolonged home confinement. Assertiveness training may enhance parents' ability to manage adolescents' emotional responses by improving communication, emotional control, and problem-solving skills. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of assertivenes

Legionnaire's disease: a current update.

Legionnaire's disease was first identified and described in January 1977. Even today, it is often regarded as an unusual or exotic disease, when in fact it is a very common form of community and nosocomial acquired pneumonia. The major roles of the acute care nurse, including patient health education; psychosocial needs of the patient; and strategies for disease prevention and control, are discussed.

Care of the living kidney donor and recipient.

For recipients, the benefits of live kidney transplantation may include avoiding the need for dialysis, a short ischaemic time and, in some cases, a well-matched kidney. The removal of one kidney should not affect the donor's long-term health. The process of live donation is a stressful one for those involved, requiring good communication skills from nurses.

Quantifying Risk of Exposure to Workplace Violence in Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care: The Workplace Behavioral Risk Assessment (WBRA).

BACKGROUND: Few health care organizations have structured approaches to assimilate and analyze disruptive behavior data. In 2012, Veterans Affairs (VA) developed the Workplace Behavior Risk Assessment (WBRA), a tool that collects behavioral threat data from multiple systems, consolidates it, and tailors staff training based on the frequency and type of events. OBJECTIVE: This paper provides an overview of the WBRA and how it can inform nurse training. METHODS: A repeated measures design evaluated trends in workplace violence reporting and event rates across 140 VA health care systems from 20

Community-based care coordination: practical applications for childhood asthma.

Care coordination programs have been used to address chronic illnesses, including childhood asthma, but primarily via practice-based models. An alternative approach employs community-based care coordinators who bridge gaps between families, health care providers, and support services. Merck Childhood Asthma Network, Inc. (MCAN) sites developed community-based care coordination approaches for childhood asthma. Using a community-based care coordination logic model, programs at each site are described along with program operational statistics. Four sites used three to four community health worker

Nurse retention in peri- and post-COVID-19 work environments: a scoping review of factors, strategies and interventions.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the deterioration of nurses' working conditions and a growing global nursing shortage. Little is known about the factors, strategies and interventions that could improve nurse retention in the peri- and post-COVID-19 period. An improved understanding of strategies that support and retain nurses will provide a foundation for developing informed approaches to sustaining the nursing workforce. The aim of this scoping review is to investigate and describe the (1) factors associated with nurse retention, (2) strategies to support nurse retention and (3)
