Intensive care nurse-family engagement from a global perspective: A qualitative multi-site exploration.

BACKGROUND: Critical illness is distressing for families, and often results in negative effects on family health that influence a family's ability to support their critically ill family member. Although recent attention has been directed at improving care and outcomes for families of critically ill patients, the manner in which nurses engage with families is not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: To describe nurses' perceptions and practices of family engagement in adult intensive care units from a global perspective. DESIGN: A qualitative-descriptive multi-site design using content analysis. SE

Perioperative Care of Prisoners: Providing Safe Care.

Correctional nurses are trained to care for prisoners in a controlled security environment; however, when a convict is transferred to a noncorrectional health care facility, the nurses there are often unfamiliar with custody requirements or how to safely care for these patients. The care of prisoners outside of prison has not been adequately investigated, and a gap exists between research and nursing education and practice. Nurses rarely have to consider how providing care for a prisoner in custody affects their practice, the potential dissonance between routine nursing care and the requiremen

[Theories of nursing professionals about the elderly].

Our study emphasizes the implicit theories of nursing professionals about the elderly and their influence on nursing behavior styles. According to our central hypothesis we expected a correlation between the differentiation of attitudes towards the elderly and the quality of nursing interventions. By means of a new methodological approach based on Forgas' theory of "social episodes" we investigated attitudes towards the elderly and behavior intentions in specific nursing situations. The sample consists of 133 professionals working in nursing homes for the elderly or in home care services. In a

Nurses' perspectives on the care of adults with mental health problems and histories of childhood sexual abuse.

Despite growing awareness and evidence linking childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to numerous ongoing health problems in adulthood, the integration of this knowledge into nursing practice remains inconsistent. This article reports the results of a study that explored nurses' perspectives on, and experiences with, providing care for adults with mental health problems who may also have histories of CSA. Nurses' views underscore the challenges and complexities involved when providing care for this population. The themes of nurses' knowledge and comfort levels, ethical practice, patient care considerati

Understanding clinical nurse specialist regulation by the boards of nursing.

The nursing profession and regulatory policy makers have struggled with the best and most consistent way to regulate advanced practice registered nurses in the role of clinical nurse specialist (CNS). Inconsistent scopes of practice, varying regulatory requirements, unavailability of certification examinations, and unclear educational preparation have been barriers to CNSs maximizing their clinical potential. Historical issues, the current nursing regulatory model in the United States, 4 domains of Boards of Nursing function, and the implications for future CNS regulation and the need for indi

A Person-Centred Approach to Severe Mental Illness: The Individual Symptom Complex as Guiding Principle.

People with long-term psychiatric disorders often display complex behaviours that cannot be fully explained by existing categories in diagnostic classification systems. As a result, translating such symptom profiles into truly person-centred and recovery-oriented care remains a challenge. This article explores how symptom-focused observation through transdiagnostic dimensions can be integrated within person-centred psychiatric nursing, and oriented toward meaning-making and recovery. A narrative literature approach was used, based on an analysis of theoretical frameworks such as the Research D

Multidimensional manifestations of artificial intelligence literacy among clinical nurses: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into nursing practice, but its safe, critical, and responsible use depends on nurses' AI literacy. Existing studies have mainly used quantitative approaches to assess overall levels of AI literacy, providing limited insight into how it is manifested in clinical practice. This study aimed to explore the multidimensional manifestations of AI literacy among clinical nurses from a qualitative perspective. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted in a tertiary Grade A general hospital in southwest China. Clinical

Comfort as process and product, merged in holistic nursing art.

Although many scholars discuss nursing as an art and science, the practice of nursing art remains unspecified and elusive, especially to learners. Nursing art is the esthetic use by nurses of scientific and humanistic principles of care applied creatively within specific contexts of care. One form of nursing art is called comfort care. Comfort care entails the process of comforting actions and the product of enhanced comfort, both of which have been described in separate programs of research. Because the process of comfort includes the product of comfort, the construct of comfort care designat

Nurses' attitudes, behaviours and perceived barriers towards pressure ulcer prevention.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are not a plague of modern man; they have been known to exist since ancient Egyptian times. However, despite the increasing expenditure on pressure ulcer prevention, pressure ulcers remain a major health care problem. Although nurses do not have the sole responsibility for pressure ulcer prevention, nurses have a unique opportunity to have a significant impact on this problem. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The specific aims of the study were to identify: * Staff nurses' attitudes towards pressure ulcer prevention. * The behaviour of staff nurses' in relation to pressure ulc
