Training nurses in an international emergency medical team using a serious role-playing game: a retrospective comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although game-based applications have been used in disaster medicine education, no serious computer games have been designed specifically for training these nurses in an IEMT setting. To address this need, we developed a serious computer game called the IEMTtraining game. In this game, players assume the roles of IEMT nurses, assess patient injuries in a virtual environment, and provide suitable treatment options. METHODS: The design of this study is a retrospective comparative analysis. The research was conducted with 209 nurses in a hospital. The data collection process of this

TAILR (Nursing-Sensitive Events and Their Association With Individual Nurse Staffing Levels) Project: Protocol for an International Longitudinal Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing-sensitive events (NSEs) are common, accounting for up to 77% of adverse events in hospitalized patients (eg, fall-related harm, pressure ulcers, and health care-associated infections). NSEs lead to adverse patient outcomes and impose an economic burden on hospitals due to increased medical costs through a prolonged hospital stay and additional medical procedures. To reduce NSEs and ensure high-quality nursing care, appropriate nurse staffing levels are needed. Although the link between nurse staffing and NSEs has been described in many studies, appropriate nurse staffing le

['Let Them Deal With It' - Interview Results From Follow-Up Care Provider Surveys In The 'Überpflege' Project].

Discharge management and transitional care are key interfaces within the German healthcare system. Nevertheless, there remain significant gaps in the transition of patients from hospital to post-discharge care. In the project "ÜberPflege - Care-centred transitional care in hospital to reduce post-discharge bottlenecks following inpatient treatment within the framework of discharge management", eleven guideline-based interviews were conducted with representatives of post-discharge care facilities and analysed using Kuckartz's content analysis method. The results reveal clear shortcomings in the

Nurses assessment of development hip dysplasia: A scoping review.

Developmental hip dysplasia is an abnormality of the hip joint which is associated with an unstable or dislocatable hip. During infancy, hips should be screened to determine whether they are stable, unstable or dislocated. In Australia, this screening is often performed by nurses using physical assessment. Physical examination includes a number of assessments which seek to identify underlying abnormalities in hip joint anatomy and function. This scoping review outlines the physical assessments used by nurses in the screening and surveillance of developmental hip dysplasia. A review of the lite

Anaplastology: changing appearances/changing lives.

This is a synopsis of the presentation delivered at the Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses' Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium, September 11, 2012 in Washington, DC. We all have imperfections in our faces and bodies that we would like to change. Consider, though, the cancer patient or the trauma victim who must deal with a facial disfigurement that completely changes their appearance, and often, their ability to function normally. Anaplastology, which combines art and science through creativity and functionality, can make monumental improvements in the quality of a person's

The (dis)appearance of the dying patient in generalist hospital and care home nurses' talk about the patient.

This article explores interview data from a study of 50 Norwegian generalist nurses' focus group accounts of caring for dying patients in the hospital and care home. An eclectic discourse analytic approach was applied to nurses' accounts of the patient and three discursive contexts of reference to the patient were identified: the 'taken as read' patient, the patient paired with particular characteristics and the patient as psychologically present. Talk about the patient falls mainly into the first two contexts, which position the patient in relation to three closely related discursive processe
