Impact of blue-collar vs. white-collar occupations on disease burden in psoriatic arthritis patients: A Swiss clinical quality management in rheumatic diseases cohort study.

Biomechanical stress may exacerbate inflammation in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). This study aimed to investigate disease activity, work disability, and drug response/retention rates in PsA patients among two different occupation's types: blue-collar workers (BCol) with manual labor versus white-collar workers (WCol) with sedentary occupations. PsA patients registered in the Swiss cohort (SCQM) were classified as BCol or WCol workers and assessed at the initiation of a biologic or targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (b-/tsDMARD). We compared the baseline characteristics at tr

Predicting Pneumoconiosis Risk in Coal Workers using Artificial Neural Networks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to create a model to predict pneumoconiosis risk in coal workers using artificial neural networks (ANNs). METHODS: An ANN-based model was developed using the health records of a population of coal workers (all men). Input neurons comprised current age, year the worker began his employment, occupational category, the number of days spent working underground, the total days spent working, the duration of employment in working underground (i.e., in a so-called group 1 job), and smoking status. Output neurons comprised the states of having pneumoconiosis and being free

[Studies on Lyme disease incidence rates in selected groups of forestry workers in West Pomerania, 2005-2014].

BACKGROUND: The data collected by sanitary-epidemiological stations in 2005-2014 were analyzed to determine the incidence rates of borreliosis Lyme disease in the West Pomerania group of workers exposed to tick bites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was assumed that an adequate comparison of official epidemiological data with the data concerning the number of exposed people, is an indispensable condition for assessing properly the trend in Lyme disease incidence rates, concerning at the same time a real scale of occupational exposure. The study covered a selected group of forestry workers, i.e., whi

Fall and collision related injuries among pedestrians, sickness absence and associations with accident type and occupation.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores pedestrian fall accidents and collisions with other road users in the Swedish road transport system, and sickness absence (SA) in relation to accident type, injury, and occupation. Further, it studies the associations between accident type, occupation, and duration of SA. METHODS: Data from several national registers were used that included 15,359 working age pedestrians (20-64 years) receiving healthcare after a fall or collision throughout 2014-2016. Individual characteristics, accident type, injury, and occupation were presented and related to SA. Logistic r

Estimating cobalt exposure in respirable dust from cobalt in inhalable dust.

Cobalt is a commonly used element in metal industry. Exposure to workers occurs mainly by inhalation of cobalt-containing dust. For the evaluation of cobalt exposure, risk assessment and investigations on occupational diseases, measurements of cobalt in respirable dust are needed. Up to now, often only data for cobalt in inhalable dust are available, which is due to the earlier classification of the limit value in this fraction. Therefore, a possibility to convert cobalt concentrations mathematically from inhalable into respirable concentrations is desirable. In this study, 639 parallel measur

Mandatory seatbelts: epidemiologic, financial, and medical rationale from the Colorado matched pairs study.

In what approximated a controlled clinical trial for efficacy of seatbelts, the Colorado matched pairs study examined 256 crashes meeting the following criteria: driver plus front-seat passenger, one belted (SB) and one nonbelted (NSB) occupant, and at least one occupant injured. Nearly half (119 of 256) of the SB partners escaped injury, while only 16% (41 of 256) of the NSB group were as fortunate. To ascertain a differential effect the 160 pairs discordant for injury were analyzed. The relative odds for injury in the SB group was 0.34 (95% Cl: 0.24, 0.49) of that in the NSB group. Likewise,

The Risk of Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Respiratory Therapists in a Country with Intermediate Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) are exposed to aerosols more frequently than other health care workers (HCWs) and might bear a higher risk for tuberculosis (TB) infection. The QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFTG) test was used to evaluate the risk for TB infection in Taiwan, a country with intermediate TB incidence. METHODS: A cross-sectional screening of HCWs, including RTs and other HCWs, with the QFTG test was conducted in Taiwan between October 2008 and December 2011. Those with initially negative QFTG results accepted repeated QFTG testing 1 y later. The positive rates of QFTG in RTs and

Workplace violence experienced by occupational therapists who visit people in their own homes.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a common experience for many health professionals. However, little is known about the experience of occupational therapists, specifically those that visit people in their own homes, and experience violence in that context. Home visiting is a fundamental component of practice for many occupational therapists and often takes place with the occupational therapist being alone. This study aimed to explore the experience of this group of occupational therapists, their responses to workplace violence such as reporting, and the impact of their experience on their well

'I couldn't change his nappy': New mothers' experiences of De Quervain's tendinosis and its impact on occupational performance.

INTRODUCTION: De Quervain's stenosing tendinosis (DQST) is common in new mothers because of awkward wrist postures during repetitive mothering occupations such as nursing and lifting their baby. However, little is known about how DQST affects occupations of first-time mothers. This study aimed to explore the experiences of first-time mothers living with DQST and how it affects performance of their motherhood occupations. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological study design was used. Participants were 15 first-time mothers of a child aged ≤24 months, with a current or previous diagnosis of DQS

Therapeutic window of dopamine D2/3 receptor occupancy to treat psychosis in Alzheimer's disease.

See Caravaggio and Graff-Guerrero (doi:10.1093/awx023) for a scientific commentary on this article.Antipsychotic drugs, originally developed to treat schizophrenia, are used to treat psychosis, agitation and aggression in Alzheimer's disease. In the absence of dopamine D2/3 receptor occupancy data to inform antipsychotic prescribing for psychosis in Alzheimer's disease, the mechanisms underpinning antipsychotic efficacy and side effects are poorly understood. This study used a population approach to investigate the relationship between amisulpride blood concentration and central D2/3 occupancy

Genetic Relatedness of Cambodian Plasmodium falciparum Isolates Was Associated with Geography and Occupation.

Cambodia is nearing Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) elimination, but targeted interventions are needed to prevent resurgence. Identity-by-descent (IBD)-based methods offer insight into parasite relatedness and transmission dynamics. Pairwise genetic relatedness was estimated among 107 P. falciparum isolates collected from military personnel and farmers during two clinical trials in Cambodia from 2014 to 2016. Using existing whole-genome sequence data, IBD relatedness was estimated as the proportion of the genome shared IBD between isolates. Associations between relatedness and epidemiolo

A comparison of the effects of occupation-based interventions with and without responsibility feedback and conventional interventions on participation in people with idiopathic Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with debilitating motor and non-motor symptoms which affect participation in meaningful occupations. Occupation-based interventions can improve participation in people with PD. Evidence for incorporating structured and intensive occupational therapy by considering the concept of responsibility is lacking for this population. This trial will compare the effects of occupation-based interventions with and without responsibility feedback and conventional interventions on participation in people with idiopathic PD. METHODS: A tot

Surveillance of occupational skin disease: EPIDERM and OPRA.

Consultant dermatologists in the U.K. have been reporting to EPIDERM, a voluntary surveillance scheme for occupational skin disease, since February 1993; reporting by occupational physicians to the scheme began in May 1994 and was superseded in January 1996 by OPRA (Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity). Currently 244 dermatologists and 790 occupational physicians report incident cases to these schemes. During the 6 years to January 1999 a total of 12, 574 new cases of occupational skin disease was estimated from reports by consultant dermatologists and 10,136 cases estimated from occupa
