A new spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of trace amounts of bile acid (BA). Using europium ion (Eu(3+))-doxycycline (DC) as a fluorescent probe, in a buffer solution of pH=7.0, BA can remarkably reduce the fluorescence intensity of the DC-Eu(3+) complex at lambda=612 nm; the reduced fluorescence intensity of the Eu(3+) is proportional to the concentration of BA. Optimum conditions for the determination of BA were also investigated. [structure: see text] A cadmium-centered tris-boronic acid receptor was synthesized, and its binding properties toward various anionic sugars were determined. This receptor shows high affinity for different anionic sugars, especially gluconic acid, which has an association constant near approximately 10(7) M(-)(1) at neutral pH. Further, using an indicator displacement assay, a color change of pyrocatechol violet was observed upon addition of anionic sugars. This colorimetric test was used as a facile screening technique to qualitatively analyze guest affinities.

The synthesis and spectroscopic properties of Cr(bpy)(chrySQ)(chryCat), a complex containing chromium(III) metal ion and chrysenequinone ligand in its partially reduced (chrySQ) and fully reduced (chryCat) forms, are described. Two hundred twenty-six consecutive adult patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia were treated with Glucantime and 81% were cured. The 19% who failed treatment had received a statistically significant lower total amount of antimony (354 mg/kg) than those who were cured (405 mg/kg) (P = 0.002). Thirty-nine of the failures were re-treated with Glucantime and 59% were cured. This large experience on initial and re-treatment cure rates probably represents the values found in clinical practice. A detailed study is presented on the use of an easily accessible probe (the europium-tetracycline 3:1 complex; referred to as Eu3Tc) for determination of hydrogen peroxide (HP). Eu3Tc undergoes a 15-fold increase in luminescence intensity on exposure to an excess of HP. Experimental results are reported that track the kinetics of gas-phase reactions initiated by Mg+*, (c-C5H5)Mg+ and (c-C5H5)2Mg+* in hydrogen cyanide and cyanoacetylene. The asymmetric oxidation of sulfides to chiral sulfoxides with hydrogen peroxide in good yield and high enantioselectivity has been catalyzed very effectively by chiral vanadium-salan [N,N'-alkyl bis(salicylamine)] complex. This report describes tests with Evan's Blue and MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl]-2, 5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) for the assessment of the viability of rhinosporidial endospores. MTT stained a proportion of the spherical bodies that we regard as the Electron Dense Bodies (EDBs), and the cytoplasm of freshly prepared endospores or ones that were stored at 4 degrees. A heterotrinuclear lanthanide complex has been prepared which contains two terbium ions in DO3A-derived binding sites and a single ytterbium ion in a DTPA-like site. The luminescence properties of the system have been investigated, showing that the terbium remains in a seven-coordinate binding site throughout the synthesis, while the ytterbium occupies the eight-coordinate site. Pumping the 488 nm absorption band of the terbium ion results in energy transfer to ytterbium with emission at 980 nm.

The title compound, [Cr(C(12)H(9)Br)(CO)(3)], crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1 with close Br.Br separations. These contacts, along with several other factors, influence the (Ph)C-C(o-BrC(6)H(4)) dihedral angle of 58.82 (6) degrees. The typical piano-stool coordination about the Cr atom is in excellent agreement with the results of density functional theory calculations.
