[Sphenoid sinusitis with intracranial extension produced by an emergent fungus].

This is a case of fungal sphenoid sinusitis in a diabetic patient with non-specific symptoms and bone erosion radiological findings in the superior and posterior sphenoid walls. Surgical treatment was performed by transnasal endoscopic approach and voriconazole orally thereafter. The histopathological study found fungus hyphal without mucosa invasion and the molecular study determined DNA to be Phialemonium curvatum, an unusual pathogen.

Diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging for detecting osseous abnormalities of the temporomandibular joint and its correlation with cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: With cone beam CT (CBCT) as the reference standard, the objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of MRI for assessing osseous abnormalities of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). METHODS: 106 TMJs from 55 patients with temporomandibular disorder were examined by CBCT and MRI. CBCT images were evaluated by two experienced oral radiologists with regard to the presence or absence of each of the following eight types of osseous abnormalities: Type 1, destructive and erosive osseous changes of the condyle; Type 2, flattening of the articular surface of the condyle

The PATCH study: Prevalence of Hearing Loss During Ageing and Treatment Choices in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Danish Nationwide Register-Based Cohort Study.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of rare hereditary collagen disorders. Hearing loss (HL) is a known complication linked to changes in the bones of the middle ear seen in OI. We aimed to determine the prevalence, age at debut, incidence, and risk of HL, surgery on bones of the middle ear, and use of hearing aids. A Danish nationwide, register-based cohort study. Data were extracted from the Danish National Patient register. Anyone with an OI diagnosis between January 1st 1977 and December 31st 2018, matched 1:5 with a reference population (Ref.Pop) on birthyear and sex, were included. 8

[Optimizing orthodontic treatment in patients taking bisphosphonates].

Bisphosphonates have unique pharmacological characteristics unlike those of any other drug group. Millions of adults take oral bisphosphonates for long-term treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia; some of these people will most likely also seek orthodontic treatment. Adverse dental effects from bisphosphonates have been reported, including decreased tooth movement, impaired bone healing, and osteonecrosis in the mandible and the maxilla. Osteonecrosis has been rarely observed after bisphosphonate use for osteoporosis. However, adverse drug effects might occur more frequently in orthodontic p

Insulin-like growth factor-II and bioactive proteins containing a part of the E-domain of pro-insulin-like growth factor-II.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II is considered to function as an important fetal growth factor, which is structurally and functionally related to IGF-I and proinsulin. At least in vitro, IGF-II actions are mediated through the IGF-I receptor and to a lesser extent the insulin receptor. After birth, the function of IGF-II is less clear although in adults the serum level of IGF-II exceeds that of IGF-I several fold. The IGF-II gene is maternally imprinted, with exception of the liver and several parts of the brain, where it is expressed from both alleles. The regulation, organization, and tra

Computed tomographic study of the patterns of oesteoarthritic change which occur on the mandibular condyle.

The aim of this study was to investigate which parts of the articular surface of the mandibular condyle are involved in osteoarthritic (OA) change (the occurring pattern) and the relationship of these patterns to clinical signs and symptoms. The computed tomographic (CT) images and clinical records of patients with OA involvement of one or both of their temporomandibular joints (TMJs) were reviewed (OA changes confirmed by CT; 684 TMJs included). The condylar articular surface was divided into nine imaginary sections on the CT images: antero-medial (AM), antero-central (AC), antero-lateral (AL

Senescent bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells exacerbate subchondral bone sclerosis and osteoarthritis via the senescence-associated secretory phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease characterized by articular cartilage degeneration, with subchondral bone sclerosis being a key pathological change. However, the mechanism underlying subchondral bone sclerosis remains unclear. Senescent stem cells have been found in OA cartilage, synovium, and subchondral bone. This study aimed to explore the role of senescent bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in subchondral bone sclerosis and OA progression. METHODS: This study utilized two mouse OA models: closed anterior cruciate ligament transection and spontaneous OA. Im

Sclerosis in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws and its correlation with the clinical stages: study of 43 cases.

We analysed the degree of sclerosis in the different stages of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) and studied the relation between the grade of sclerosis, the clinical symptoms, and the depth of lucency. We compared 43 patients with mandibular BRONJ with a control group of 40 cases with no bony lesions. The presence of sclerotic bone, cortical irregularities, radiolucency, fragmentation or sequestration, periostitis, and narrowing of the mandibular canal were studied from computed tomographic (CT) scans using the program ImageJ 1.47v (National Institute of Health, Bethesd

Association between disk position and degenerative bone changes of the temporomandibular joints: an imaging study in subjects with TMD.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and relationship between disk position and degenerative bone changes in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), in subjects with internal derangement (ID). MRI and CT scans of 180 subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were studied. Different image parameters or characteristics were observed, such as disk position, joint effusion, condyle movement, degenerative bone changes (flattened, cortical erosions and irregularities), osteophytes, subchondral cysts and idiopathic condyle resorption. The present study concluded that there is a sign

Percutaneous screw fixation without bone graft for cystic-type scaphoid fractures.

BACKGROUND: The most controversial problem in treating scaphoid fractures is whether bone grafts are necessary for cystic-type fractures. METHODS: We treated 105 scaphoid fractures using Herbert screws (1988-1997), AO 3.0 mm cannulated screws (1998-2002), and Acutrak screws (2003-2006). The patients ranged in age from 14 years to 67 years (average, 26 years). Our classifications were based on the radiographic findings: linear type (51 cases); cystic type (24 cases); and sclerotic or displaced type (30 cases). Linear and cystic types did not have any displacement more than 2 mm. If the fractur

Malleus fixation: clinical and histopathologic findings.

The goals of this study were to review important clinical and histopathologic features of malleus fixation. Ten clinical cases and 10 histopathologic cases of malleus fixation were identified. For the clinical cases, preoperative clinical data, surgical findings, and preoperative and postoperative audiometric findings were reviewed. Ninety percent of the clinical cases achieved significant reduction of the air-bone gap after operation. Two thirds of these cases had an air-bone gap of 10 dB or less, and the remainder had air-bone gaps between 20 and 28 dB after operation. For the temporal bone

Molecular Characterization of Three Canine Models of Human Rare Bone Diseases: Caffey, van den Ende-Gupta, and Raine Syndromes.

One to two percent of all children are born with a developmental disorder requiring pediatric hospital admissions. For many such syndromes, the molecular pathogenesis remains poorly characterized. Parallel developmental disorders in other species could provide complementary models for human rare diseases by uncovering new candidate genes, improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms and opening possibilities for therapeutic trials. We performed various experiments, e.g. combined genome-wide association and next generation sequencing, to investigate the clinico-pathological features

Histopathological features of hypertrophic bone mass of temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA): An explanation of pathogenesis of TMJA.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a severe organic disease with progressive limitation of the mouth opening. Histopathologically, a residual joint space is reported to consist of fibrous tissue and/or cartilage, indicating two types of interface (osteo-fibrous and osteo-chondral) of residual joint space. It is well known that adverse mechanical stress results in pathological changes of osteoarthritis and enthesopathy in these interfaces. What would happen pathologically in these interfaces of TMJA under repeated mandible movement has not been elucidated. Fourteen tissue samples of re

p19 INK4d controls hematopoietic stem cells in a cell-autonomous manner during genotoxic stress and through the microenvironment during aging.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are characterized by the capacity for self-renewal and the ability to reconstitute the entire hematopoietic compartment. Thrombopoietin maintains adult HSCs in a quiescent state through the induction of cell cycle inhibitors p57(Kip2) and p19(INK4d). Using the p19(INK4d-/-) mouse model, we investigated the role of p19(INK4d) in basal and stress-induced hematopoiesis. We demonstrate that p19(INK4d) is involved in the regulation of HSC quiescence by inhibition of the G0/G1 cell cycle transition. Under genotoxic stress conditions, the absence of p19(INK4d) in HSCs
