OBJECTIVES: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) begin to lose weight several years before diagnosis, which suggests weight variation is associated with some factor(s) that precede the onset of motor symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the association of autonomic nervous system with body weight in patients with PD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 90 patients with early de novo PD. We examined the associations of body mass index (BMI) with sympathetic nervous activity reflected in orthostatic intolerance or cardiac uptake of 123 I-metaiodobenzylguanidine and parasympathetic n

AIMS: The nicotinic acid analogue acipimox is an antilipolytic agent, which acutely inhibits lipolysis and suppresses systemic levels of free fatty acids (FFA) and improves insulin sensitivity in obese patients. These effects of acipimox are transient due to a counter-regulatory increase in growth hormone levels that reverse the antilipolytic effect of acipimox. Hypopituitary patients constitute a viable model to study the growth hormone-independent effects of acipimox and the impact of isolated changes in FFA concentrations and insulin sensitivity on parasympathetic nervous activity. The aim

The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway is a part of the parasympathetic nervous system and it can also be entitled as an anti-inflammatory reflex. It consists of terminations of the vagal nerve into blood, acetylcholine released from the terminations, macrophages and other cells having α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR), calcium ions crossing through the receptor and interacting with nuclear factors, and erythrocytes with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) terminating the neurotransmission. Stopping of inflammatory cytokines production is the major task for the cholinergic antiinflamma…

The effects of hypothalamic lesions and intravenous glucose infusion on the efferent activity of vagal and splanchnic nerves to the pancreas were studied in anesthetized rats. Lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH), the dorsomedial hypothalamic (DMH) and the paraventricular (PVN) nuclei increased vagal and reduced splanchnic nerve activity. Lesion of the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) decreased pancreatic vagal nerve activity, and produced either increased or decreased activity of pancreatic splanchnic nerve. Intravenous glucose infusion increased activity of the vagal nerve and reduc

The purpose of this article is to help perinatal nurses understand how to more effectively care for women in labor who have spinal cord injuries (SCIs), especially those women who develop the complication of autonomic dysreflexia (AD). AD is a syndrome that can occur in patients with SCIs above the level of T6. Its symptoms include dangerous paroxysmal hypertension, resulting from abnormal interplay between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. While this syndrome was not commonly encountered by perinatal nurses in childbirth settings in the past, the dramatic improvements in bo

The parasympathetic nervous system is critically involved in the regulation of tear secretion by activating muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Hence, various animal models targeting parasympathetic signaling have been developed to induce dry eye disease (DED). However, the muscarinic receptor subtype (M1-M5) mediating tear secretion remains to be determined. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the M3 receptor subtype regulates tear secretion and to evaluate the ocular surface phenotype of mice with targeted disruption of the M3 receptor (M3R-/-). The experimental techniques i…

INTRODUCTION: Botulism is a syndrome caused by the toxin of the bacillus Clostridium botulinum. The toxin acts by blocking the presynaptic cholinergic endings of the neuromuscular junction and of the parasympathetic nervous system, and gives rise to a flaccid paralysis and parasympathetic failure. The most common way to catch the disease is by ingestion of the preformed toxin present in badly sterilised home-made preserves, although other mechanisms are also possible. Its incidence in Spain today is very low.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric cancer represents a real public health problem as far as incidence, aggressiveness and unfavorable prognosis are concerned. The autonomous nervous system might be one of the major factors involved in the onset, progression, and metastasis, both sympathetically and parasympathetically. The increased activation of the M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) triggers pro-oncogenic mechanisms, especially at a gastric level, through the activation of the Hippo signaling pathway and the increase of the nerve growth factor.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is frequently observed in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) but the evolution over time and the relationship to clinical characteristics are not yet established.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the correlation of disease activity and progression of disability with composite scores of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction and serum levels of catecholamines in a cross-sectional study of patients with clinically active and clinically stable MS. In a longitudinal study of clinically active MS patients, we performed cardiovascular reflex tests for up to 2 years.

The aim of our study was to assess the sympathetic nervous system's involvement in the evolution of gastric carcinoma in patients by analyzing the mediators of this system (epinephrine and norepinephrine), as well as by analyzing the histological expression of the norepinephrine transporter (NET). We conducted an observational study including 91 patients diagnosed with gastric carcinoma and an additional 200 patients without cancer between November 2017 and October 2018. We set the primary endpoint as mortality from any cause in the first two years after enrolment in the study. The patients we

Hepatic fibrosis is characterized by abnormal accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) that can lead to ductopenia, cirrhosis, and even malignant transformation. In this review, we examine cholestatic liver diseases characterized by extensive biliary fibrosis such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), polycystic liver disease (PLD), and MDR2-/- and BDL mouse models. Following biliary injury, cholangiocytes, the epithelial cells that line the bile ducts, become reactive and adopt a neuroendocrine phenotype in which they secrete and respond to neurohormone

Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in long COVID (LC) and may shape its symptom burden. As hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system (ANS) alterations have been implicated in both LC and depressive disorders, this overlap raises the question of whether both conditions share psychobiological activity patterns or show distinct profiles. The present study compared these systems between youth with LC and depressive disorders during a developmental period of heightened mental health vulnerability. Thirty-four participants were included (n = 17 per subgroup; LC: M

A 50-year-old female patient sustained bilateral tibiofibular fractures due to a traffic accident and underwent open external fixation surgery on both lower limbs. Postoperatively, she reported severe pain (VAS ≥ 8). The patient had no significant underlying medical conditions or contraindications to vagal nerve stimulation. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS)-a non-invasive modality that activates vagal pathways to modulate sympathetic-parasympathetic balance, suppress inflammation, and inhibit pain signaling-was trialed as an adjunctive analgesic intervention. Heart rate

Through the comparison of responses of normal volunteers, assessment of autonomic function under abnormal clinical conditions focused on the detection of dysautonomia involving both the parasympathetic and adrenergic limbs in patients with Chagas heart disease, post-cardiac surgery, chronic heart failure, mitral valve prolapse, and hyperthyroidism. In particular, the autonomic impairment observed in Chagas disease patients involved predominantly the parasympathetic control of heart rate at the sinus node level, and the adrenergic innervation at the myocardial ventricular level. The autonomic d

Mitral valve disease (MVD) progression is associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance. This study hypothesized that sympathetic and parasympathetic tones would be altered with MVD progression. ANS activity was assessed among different MVD classes in untreated dogs. This cross-sectional retrospective study included 29 healthy control dogs and 71 dogs with MVD divided according to American College of Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines. Heart rate variability (HRV) analyses utilised time and frequency domains and were derived from 5 min, six-lead electrocardiogram recordings of sin
