Patterns of Adversity from Family, Peers, and Teachers in Chinese Adolescents: Predicting Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Through Positive Reappraisal and Rumination.

Family, peers, and teachers are the three pillars that significantly shape adolescents' lives. Traumatic events originating from these domains (i.e., family, peers, and teachers) can have profound implications on adolescents' mental health. Using a three-wave dataset with a 6-month interval, this study investigated 2,166 Chinese adolescents (51.9% girls, Mage = 13.44 ± 0.72), who completed questionnaires assessing family adversity, peer victimization, and teacher maltreatment at Time 1, cognitive emotion regulation strategies at Time 2, followed by assessments of complex posttraumatic stress d

How Do Traditional and Cyber Victimization Affect Sleep Quality among College Students? The Chain Mediating Role of Rumination and Anxiety.

Previous studies have shown that peer victimization has a negative effect on sleep quality. However, there is limited understanding of how peer victimization affects sleep quality. According to the theoretical model of the stress-sleep relationship, stressors, such as peer victimization, affect individuals' sleep quality by affecting their cognitive processes and emotional responses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the cognitive (rumination) and emotional (anxiety) mechanisms of the relationship between peer victimization (traditional and cyber victimization) and sleep quality. Usin

Connections After Cancer: Adolescent and Young Adult Survivors' Perspectives on Forming New Friendships After Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The psychological and social challenges of an adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer diagnosis often transcend physical health, impacting one's social network during a time when peer connections may be most crucial for support. The current study examines adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors' perspectives on how cancer impacts their thoughts and behaviors toward forming new peer relationships. METHODS: Thirty-five YA survivors (Mean age = 33 ± 5.67 years) diagnosed with cancer between 18 and 39 years participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Interviews wer

The role of friendship maintenance over communication technologies in freshmen's social adjustment to college.

Objective: Studies show that friendships help undergraduates navigate the transition to college, but it is unclear how technology use impacts the maintenance of friendships and students' subsequent adjustment. This study fills this gap by examining how maintenance over communication technologies with pre-college and in-college friends is associated with freshmen's social adjustment to college, via two psychological processes: social support and belongingness. Participants and Methods: 194 college freshmen completed online surveys. Results: Path analyses show that maintaining friendships with p

Neural, cognitive and psychopathological signatures of a prosocial or delinquent peer environment during early adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period for brain development, yet the impact of peer environments on brain structure, cognition, and psychopathology remains poorly understood. Here, we capitalized on data from 7806 adolescents (age = 12.02 ± 0.67) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, to determine associations between two distinct peer environments (proportion of prosocial or delinquent friends) and the structural and functional architecture of the brain, cognition, as well as behavioral and emotional dysregulation. A higher proportion of prosocial friends was associated with

Peer Interdependence in Bullying Victimization, Self-Compassion, and Moral Disengagement: A Dyadic Analysis of Early Adolescents.

Moral disengagement plays a critical role in adolescents' social adjustment, and growing evidence suggests that peer characteristics may be linked to its development. However, limited research has explored how best friend's adverse experiences and emotion regulation strategies relate to adolescents' moral strategies. Bullying victimization and self-compassion, as salient adverse experiences and emotion regulation processes during adolescence, have been associated with moral disengagement, but the interpersonal patterns of these associations remain unclear. To address this gap, the present stud

Peer-Mentor Support for Older, Vulnerable Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease: A Mixed Methods Process-Outcome Evaluation.

AIM: To achieve a deeper understanding of the results of a primary randomised controlled trial to clarify the potential effective mechanisms and barriers of a peer-mentor intervention. DESIGN: Mixed methods process-outcome evaluation of the intervention. METHOD: Qualitative and quantitative data were collected during the intervention in a during-trial set-up, that is, a convergent design. RESULTS: The qualitative and quantitative findings mostly confirmed and expanded each other, identifying several mechanisms that facilitate the effectiveness of peer-mentor support during cardiac rehabilit

Cognitive Behavioral Immersion for Depression: Protocol for a Three-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial of Peer-Based Coaching in the Metaverse.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are among the most common mental health concerns globally. Efficacious treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy exist but remain difficult to access and scale. Cognitive behavioral immersion (CBI)-a cognitive behavioral skills training intervention delivered by peer coaches in the metaverse-has been developed to address these barriers. CBI can be used through a virtual reality headset or via flat-screen devices such as phones, tablets, or computers. Pilot data have established its usability among participants with clinical levels of depression and anxi

Telehealth Programme for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) for adolescents with acquired and congenital brain injuries: a protocol for mixed-methods randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: For adolescents with brain injury, challenges with social function often persist into adulthood, impacting social participation and quality of life. The Programme for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) is a manualised group-based intervention with preliminary evidence demonstrating improved social knowledge and participation for adolescents with acquired brain injury or cerebral palsy when delivered face to face. The recent COVID-19 pandemic and challenges for families living outside metropolitan centres to access the programme suggest a telehealth delivere

Exploring the structural links between peer support, psychological resilience, and exercise adherence in adolescents: a multigroup model across gender and educational stages.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the associations among peer support, psychological resilience, and exercise adherence in adolescents, paying particular attention to different gender groups and educational stages. Psychological resilience was regarded as a potential explanatory mechanism in the relationship between peer support and exercise adherence. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a mixed approach was conducted in Zhejiang Province, China (2023), involving a total of 2,137 adolescents (aged 10-18; 49.6% were girls), who completed three standardized questionnaires measuring psychologica

A cluster-randomized trial of interventions for adolescent mental disorders in Zimbabwe.

PURPOSE: Young people have low uptake of mental health. We compared two task-shifted mental health care models, i.e., adult Friendship Bench (FB) delivered by community health workers and Youth Friendship Bench (YouFB) delivered by trained university students in Harare, Zimbabwe. We hypothesised that the peer-delivered YouFB would have greater uptake and effectiveness in managing common mental disorders (CMDs) in 16-19-year-olds compared to the standard FB model. We also aimed to evaluate the reach, fidelity, acceptability and cost of the YouFB compared to standard FB. METHODS: We conducted a

Longitudinal Effects of Peer Rejection on Reactive/Proactive Aggression: Risk Accumulation or Cognitive Dissonance?

Although peer rejection has been associated with increased reactive and proactive aggression, previous studies have predominantly used cross-sectional designs, which limits causal inferences. Moreover, current research on the specific mechanisms of different aggression subtypes remains in adequate. This longitudinal study aimed to (1) Examine whether peer rejection differentially predicts reactive and proactive aggression, (2) Test whether rejection sensitivity mediates these pathways and (3) Compare the Cumulative Risk Theory and Cognitive Dissonance Theory by exploring how hostile attributio

Exploring peer loss and survivor guilt among young adult survivors of childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: There are nearly 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests at least 25% of these survivors have lost a peer to cancer. The current study investigated the nature of peer loss in a sample of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: Survivors (n = 63) completed an online survey including measures of peer loss, survivor guilt (Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5). Relations between peer loss, survivor guilt, and PTSS were assessed. RESULTS

Psychophysiological Factors Moderate Amygdala-Prefrontal Connectivity Linked to Perceived Peer Victimization and Depressive Symptoms in Preadolescent Migrant Children.

Background: As a sense of an intense stressor, perceived peer victimization can cause adverse effects on mental health, like depressive symptoms. Yet, little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying how perceived peer victimization causes and maintains depressive symptoms in preadolescence. Methods: Here we investigate the effects of peer victimization on amygdala subregional functional connectivity in 101 preadolescent migrant children, and their relations to depressive symptoms and potential protective factors of self-esteem and daily cortisol. Further control analyses were c
