Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels and personality traits in patients with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors. Previous studies have demonstrated lower serum BDNF levels in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and reported an association between BDNF levels and depression-related personality traits in healthy subjects. The aim of the present study was to explore for a possible association between peripheral BDNF levels and personality traits in patients with MDD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 123 inpatients with MDD (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental D

Personality and risk perception in transport.

Within research on individual variations in risk perception, personality has been suggested as one important factor. In the present study, personality traits (44 items from the Big Five inventory) were investigated in relation to risk perception in transport and transport behavioural adaptations. In a sample of 312 participants, we found that the personality trait 'emotional stability versus neuroticism' was negatively correlated with risk perception (operationalised as "thinking about the possibility") of an accident (-0.38) and an unpleasant incident, such as crime, violence, robbery (-0.25)

The personality trait self-directedness predicts the amygdala's reaction to appetizing cues in fMRI.

Personality and neural response to food cues in various mesolimbic brain structures have been linked to eating disorders. We investigated the question of whether personality traits in healthy individuals correlate with the brain activation induced on confrontation with appetizing visual stimuli. Personality was assessed in 27 normal-weight participants (14 women, mean age=26.0, SD=3.3 years) with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). After an overnight fast, participants viewed blocks of pictures, half containing appetizing food and the other half showing scrambled pictures as control

Personality, perceived luck and gambling attitudes as predictors of gambling involvement.

A quantitative observational study was undertaken to examine the relationship between individual factors and level of gambling involvement, in particular problem gambling (PG). The specific factors under study were personality, perceived luck, and attitudes towards gambling. A sample of university students (N = 185) completed a battery of questionnaires, consisting of the 16PF, Canadian Problem Gambling Index, Belief in Good Luck Scale (BIGL), Gambling Attitudes Scale (GAS), and the Impulsive Non-Conformity subscale (ImpNon) from the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences. Major depressive disorder, serotonin transporter, and personality traits: why patients use suboptimal decision-making strategies?

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show suboptimal decision-making strategy in experimental game situations. The influence of personality traits and genetic variations on decision-making is not known. METHODS: Contingency learning based on the cumulative effect of reward and punishment was assessed in 124 patients with unipolar MDD using the ABCD (reward sensitivity) and EFGH (punishment sensitivity) versions of the Iowa Gambling Test. All patients were genotyped for serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and received the Temperament and Character Invent

[The relevance of sexuality in the treatment of borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Although many articles about borderline personality disorder have been published over the last 25 years, sexuality has not received much attention. Sexual functioning may however be relevant for the treatment of this disorder. AIM: To find out from research reports, the literature and clinical practice whether they contain evidence of varying degrees of problematical sexuality in borderline patients, and if so, to make an inventory of the evidence. METHOD: A literature search was conducted via PubMed and Psycinfo using the search terms 'borderline personality disorder', 'sexualit

Role of sex hormone-binding globulin in the relationship between sex hormones and antisocial and aggressive personality in inmates.

Plasma total testosterone (TT), free bioavailable testosterone (BT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHGB), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were analysed in a sample of 89 inmates. Also, the tendency towards an Antisocial Personality Disorder (AAPS) and Aggressiveness (based on an index containing three scales of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory; BDHI) was assessed. Results showed strong correlations between SHBG, total testosterone and free bioavailable testosterone. SHBG and total testosterone correlated with Aggressiveness (0.39 and 0.29, respectively), tho

Associations between personality traits and depressive mood in long-term high-altitude hypoxia-exposed individuals: exploring indirect pathways through cortical structure.

Personality plays a crucial role in human adaptation to natural and social environments. The Big Five personality traits are associated with variations in cortical structure and relate to depressive mood. However, how personality traits are associated with depressive mood through cortical structures in long-term high-altitude hypoxia-exposed individuals remains unclear. In this study, we conducted morphological brain measurements using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 129 healthy adult participants who had long-term residence on the plateau. Personality traits and depression levels were ass

Distrustful, Conventional, Entitled, and Dysregulated: PID-5 Personality Facets Predict Hostile Masculinity and Sexual Violence in Community Men.

Psychopathy and narcissism are known predictors of sexual violence, but they are broad personality constructs with limited utility in intervention and prevention efforts. The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) assesses 25 specific personality facets residing in five higher order domains. The goal of this research was to test the PID-5 in a sexual aggression model, which also included hostile masculinity, juvenile delinquency, and five sexual assault indices. A nationwide sample of adult men (N = 512) completed the online survey. Hostile masculinity and juvenile delinquency were expected t…

Fear of pain potentiates nocebo hyperalgesia.

Nocebo hyperalgesia has received sparse experimental attention compared to placebo analgesia. The aim of the present study was to investigate if personality traits and fear of pain could predict experimental nocebo hyperalgesia. One hundred and eleven healthy volunteers (76 females) participated in an experimental study in which personality traits and fear of pain were measured prior to induction of thermal heat pain. Personality traits were measured by the Big-Five Inventory-10. Fear of pain was measured by the Fear of Pain Questionnaire III. Heat pain was induced by a PC-controlled thermode.

Exploring relationships for visceral and somatic pain with autonomic control and personality.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) integrates afferent and motor activity for homeostatic processes including pain. The aim of the study was to compare hitherto poorly characterised relations between brainstem autonomic control and personality in response to visceral and somatic pain. Eighteen healthy subjects (16 females, mean age 34) had recordings during rest and pain of heart rate (HR), cardiac vagal tone (CVT), cardiac sensitivity to baroreflex (CSB), skin conductance level (SC), cardiac sympathetic index (CSI) and mean blood pressure (MBP). Visceral pain was induced by balloon distension
